Her comics catalogue the incremental maturation of the smart but unpopular preteen Marlys; her painfully sensitive little brother, Freddie; her big sister, Maybonne; her cousins Arna and Arnold; and occasionally the various adults in their lives. The book collects more than 200 of her syndicated four-panel strip Ernie Pook's Comeek, in which Barry deftly maps the emotional terrain of Marlys and the inevitable social traumas inherent in growing up. Alternating among the voices of the family, Barry offers stories on difficult teachers (Mr. Valotto has sideburns, wears turtleneck dickeys and "thinks he's hip"); boys (Marlys goes broke "buying Twinkies to split with Kevin Turner"); Marlys's difficult mother ("five guys asked her to marry them before she picked my father, the worst mistake of her life") and much more. While Barry can be funny presenting the silly escapades and fantasies of Marlys, Arna, Freddie and Arnold, her real talent is the very nearly poetic invocation of moments of pubescent joy and humiliation as well as of the wonder at the fast-approaching, mysterious state of being a teenager. The popularity of Barry's comic strip "Ernie Pook's Comeek," an alternative newspaper mainstay, continues unabated after 15 years, but earlier collections of it are out of print. Sasquatch Books began rectifying that situation with The Freddie Stories (1999) and continues in this generous collection focused on preteen Marlys without neglecting her teenaged sister, Maybonne, their freaky little brother, Freddie, and assorted cousins and neighbors. Marlys and her siblings have it tough. Their father is absent, their mother detached, and their existence hardscrabble. They find comfort in childhood joys that most will recognize, from baton lessons and toys from Sears to first love and the last day of school. The fortification they derive from those simple pleasures helps them survive the callous teachers, ruthless classmates, and vicious dogs that afflict them at every turn. The most popular member of "Ernie Pook's" cast, Marlys is endearingly gawky. Lynda Barry has worked as a painter, cartoonist, writer, illustrator, playwright, editor, commentator, and teacher. She is the inimitable creator behind the seminal comic strip "Ernie Pook's Comeek", and author of "The Freddie Stories", "One! Hundred! Demons!", "The! Greatest! of! Marlys!", "Cruddy: An Illustrated Novel", "Naked Ladies! Naked Ladies! Naked Ladies!", and "The Good Times are Killing Me", which was adapted as an off-Broadway play and won the Washington State Governor's Award. Barry has written three bestselling and acclaimed creative how-to graphic novels for D+Q: the Eisner Award-winning "What It Is", and "Picture This", " "and "Syllabus" "Notes from an accidental professor."

The Greatest of Marlys is my most recent book by Lynda ...

The Greatest of Marlys is my most recent book by Lynda Barry and I recommend it highly for a number of reasons. I am a white 63 year old doctor who has read, out of order, nearly everything Ms. Barry has published. I mention that because I am probably not her typical reader. Yet, I have learned much from her work and have great admiration for her insights into preadolescent boys and girls. Although probably based somewhat on her own experiences, she his extraordinary insight into the mental life of her characters. Her deliberately amateurish drawings are perfectly suited to stories she relates through her graphic art. No, these are not cartoons, in my opinion, but miniature stories with illustrations that give life to her characters narrative. Lynda Barry is, in fact, a true artist.

Lynda Barry gets to the heart of things. Some of the comics are funny. Some are more poignant, even a bit painful. She gets kids. However, these comics are for adults or young adults.

Nicolas Guilbert is a French painter, photographer, and graphic designer. His work has been published in Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur, Senso, Citizen K, and books devoted to his photography. Antoine de Caunes is a French television and cinema personality. He appeared in the BBC2 television series Rapido, and created Eurotrash with Jean Paul Gaultier for Channel 4. He presented the 38th César Awards. Cécile Guilbert is an author and literary critic who has published several books. She received the Prix Médicis for Warhol Spirit.

A treasure for anyone who loves Paris or photography

Following in the tradition of Paris' great street photographers, Nicolas Guilbert captures ordinary moments of Parisian life that through his keen eye become extraordinary. His images reveal him as an artist in the truest sense of the word — but also a comedian, a philosopher, and even a cultural anthropologist. And no matter the subject, there is an immense love that runs like a thread through all of Guilbert's images. I highly recommend this beautiful book for anyone who appreciates street photography or portraiture, and for anyone who wants to burrow beneath Paris' clichéd veneer and see the city and her people in a new and more authentic light. C'est vraiment un triomphe. Bravo, Msr. Guilbert !

*Starred Review* During folklore's first and greatest period, the end of the nineteenth century, such gifted writers as Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats wandered the Irish countryside, gathering the oral vestiges of a great tradition. Publishing their gleanings later, sometimes altered in transcription, they garnered an audience eager for tales of heroes, fairies, and gods. Such compilations as theirs remain major sources of Irish mythology. One of the best-known seanachies, or traditional tale spinners, in Ireland today, Lenihan is an Irish-speaking schoolmaster in the very area where Gregory and Yeats gathered their tales. He discloses that, despite the arrival of fax, Internet, and cell phone, the old tales persist. His fresh collection includes some famous motifs, such as the "fairy blast" that steals away people and things, but also such regionally specific figures as Biddy Early, the White Witch of Clare--a historical figure around whom myths have accrued. Lenihan focuses on the "other crowd" of the title: the fairy people, who are the diminished remnants of old gods, still able to affect the world of humankind. This is not quaint fluff but the powerful, sometimes disturbing lore of a world parallel to and occasionally intersecting ours. A major contribution to its field, the book is also compulsively readable, not least because Green, an audio producer, has helped capture the torque of Irish speech in Lenihan's storytelling. Storyteller, teacher, folklorist, and author of numerous books and recordings, Eddie Lenihan has been collecting stories from the elders of Southern Ireland for twenty-seven years and sharing them with audiences around the world through radio, television, and live presentation. Lenihan lives in County Clare, Ireland.

Very interesting book.

This collection of collected narratives and commentary was enjoyable and informative. Some of the stories were collected fairly recently; they are a testament to the still-living "fairy faith" of Irish people. The commentary was very informative. I think of the faith as a sort of underground religion coexisting with mainstream churches of the British Isles that despite so much change has managed to survive, so this book appealed to me.

Well balanced

I found out about this book through the radio program "To the Best of Our Knowledge". It is a delightful collection of stories, written in the various tellers' own voices. It is as easy to read, as it is to listen to a story. At the end of each story the author writes a brief reflection, either linking the story with folkloric commonalities or pointing out areas for more "rational" explanations, but he never ruins the "magic". It is a good read from both a sociological/folkloric studies perspective and from a more magically indulgent perspective.

Fairies aren't funny

If you think fairies are little winged creatures to amuse children, think again. Lenihan has collected Irish folk tales that show the serious and often the dangerous side of the world of fairy -- a world very much alive in the traditions of Ireland. Not all encounters with the world of fairy lead humans to disaster, but be warned that some of these stories are NOT bedtime reading if you want to sleep well.

Just What I Needed

I have begun a new cardiology position. One of my roles is to perform cardiac stress testing. I bought Dr. Chung's book and read it from cover to cover. It was what I needed to fill in the "holes" and give structure to what I was learning from on the job training. The book is concise and provides the information needed to perform stress testing competently (assuming you already have a good knowledge of EKG interpretation) I would encourage anyone new to stress testing to start with Dr. Chung's book.

A good easy read with a lot of basic information on google

As an experienced hardware focused engineer I have not followed any of the buzz about google. I have used google for many many years and find the tool useful for doing engineering research and solving technical issues. So reading this book helped me understand much more than I knew about how google is managed and guided.

Good, Basic Annotated Edition Of Poe's Fiction

Poe's brilliant but often arcane writings fairly scream out for an in-depth and lucid annotated text. The huge amount of literary and historical allusions that course through his fiction are of a sort that very few modern readers could possibly fully comprehend. The targets of Poe's frequent satire and parody are pretty much all long forgotten in the great passage of time, rendering some of the tales virtually incomprehensible. One would think that a writer as important and influential as Poe would have numerous annotated editions devoted to his rewarding but difficult fiction. Amazingly, only one such collection is currently in print, this University of Illinois Press volume edited by Stuart and Susan Levine, first published in 1976.
In the preface, the stated task is "to bring together in one convenient edition all of the information one needs to understand Poe's stories." The editors attempt to accomplish this by grouping a series of thematically related tales together in fifteen separate sections (with such titles as SLAPSTICK GOTHIC and SALVATION THROUGH TERROR), each with prefatory information and multiple end notes. The notes do provide much needed explanatory detail to the more obscure references and therefore make the stories easier to understand and appreciate. But the editors go no deeper than that, only offering definitions and never once explaining why Poe may have actually decided it was important to use a particular referential aside or Latin phrase. This is basically just a good, functional introduction to the works of this greatest of all "horror writers." Anyone wanting detailed critical and/or interpretative responses to the stories won't find them here.

A most interesting play

I must admit I awaited the publishing of this book with some anticipation, hoping that it might go into some detail on the whole 'Hand D' issue which some Shakespeare scholars consider to be Shakespeare's handwriting. How they can make such an evaluation is open to question, as the only sample to which to compare this handwritten manuscript is six poorly formed and inconsistent signatures.

Recently, a scholar named Bruster from the University of Texas accepted this doubtful attribution as fact, and studied spelling variants to claim that Shakespeare wrote the additions to Spanish Tragedy. If one attempts to make a case based on spelling variants based on a dubious attribution one is on doubly shaky ground. He des this in hope that two conjectures might equal a fact. However, he fails to acknowledge the evidence and the fact that according to Henslowe's Diary Ben Jonson was paid for making the same additions shortly before the play was republished with those additions in 1602.

I also hoped that it would show the handwriting and photograph excerpts in sufficiently detailed form so that one could make one's own evaluation. Although the scholarship is quite engaging, the photograph excerpts are not sufficient for one to do one's own evaluation if one wishes, in my opinion. Another thing is that the presentation is choppy with some many footnotes on single pages, that there may be only several lines of dialogue on a single page. I found this quite disruptive to the continuity of reading, compared to say reading it on Kindle where one can look up individual words or meanings as one goes along.

Sir Thomas More lay unpublished as a manuscript for about two hundred years, then receiving a publication as Shakespeare in book form. The play was a collaboration between several authors, and several portions of it were subjected to censorship. The play does have some points of interest particularly in dealing with this Catholic martyr who lived and died under King Henry VIII's reign.

For instance as a study in pathos, it's absolutely excellent with fascinating dialogue for example between More and his executioner, who admires him, and so is reluctant, and an earlier scene which I am sure would hold an audience spellbound shows a group in the process of being executed when a pardon arrives for all.

A critique of this play is that the cast is too large making it unwieldy for the economics of regular production.

All in all, I do recommend this play, there are cheaper and what you may find to be better alternatives. In my travels I found a rather interesting version online which I could read and enjoy without all the choppiness of showing the different hands, which probably would have been better shown in the appendix.

I leave it to your tender discretion, and highly recommend the play, although I would recommend reading another version first, before investing in this particular version. The Oxford Edition shows passages thought to be Shakespeare which runs to about two pages in that edition, and only about four pages if you reading in a regular format.

I think most people will enjoy the play, and I hope this was helpful.

Fascinating look at the man and the play!

While browsing through one of the Shakespeare bookstores in Stratford-upon-Avon this volume caught my eye. I had never heard that Shakespeare wrote a play on Thomas More. After looking through it at the store it was clear he hadn't written the entire play. He was one of about four other authors and he revised an already prepared text. Loving St. Thomas More as I do, I couldn't resist and bought the book.

The book is part of the Arden Shakespeare series, a scholarly series designed to support both literary research and theatrical presentation. The introduction is 120 pages, covering the history of writing the play, prominent themes in the play, sources used by the playwrights, performance history, and staging advice. It's quite comprehensive if occasionally bogged down in critical literary jargon, for example this passage concerning a scene where Thomas More and his servant Randall swap clothes to see if they can fool Erasmus into thinking Randall is More:

The exchange of costumes for the purpose of metatheatrical role-playing asserts the nature of the play itself as an enactment for the commercial theatre, and places the institution of theatre in relation to the play's subject-matter, the learned scholar. The low social and intellectual status of the actor of More in relation to the role he is playing corresponds with the social and intellectual status of the role of Randall - though the play insists repeatedly that More is himself of humble origin. [p. 78]

Fortunately the historical comments are straightforward and interesting. The four or five authors used various sources on More's life, some favoring More and some despising him. More was still a controversial topic when the play was written (around 1600), with Queen Elizabeth on the throne. More had refused to acknowledge the authority of Henry VIII over the church in England and implicitly his marriage to his second wife (the mother of Elizabeth). The play was reviewed by a censor who made many suggestions and deletions, all of which readers can see in the main text.

The text of the play itself is a critical edition, with extensive footnotes clarifying who wrote what and explaining the meaning of the archaic words and phrases. It requires a little patience to read. I read the play before I read the introduction. I definitely recommend that reading order since the introduction discusses details of events in the play, events I was unfamiliar with from other sources. I would have been somewhat lost in the introduction without reading the play first.

The play is in roughly two halves. The first half deals with More's rise to power in England, eventually becoming Chancellor. The main incident depicted is a near-riot of lower class workers. They want to burn the homes of foreigners in London who have the favor of the king and have been putting natives out of work. More, as a sheriff of London, speaks to the crowd and quells their anger. His service in averting the riot is what brings him political success. [Historically, this incident is almost twenty years before More becomes chancellor and lots of other events and actions contributed to his rise.]

The second half deals with his life in court, his refusal of the Oath of Supremacy (never named or detailed in the play), and his eventual execution. Throughout both halves, his jovial nature, both in personal affairs and as a lawyer/political figure, is demonstrated by many witty little scenes. If A Man for All Seasons is the straight-laced drama of More's life and death, this is much more like a comedy. Not that the play makes fun of More, but it presents his penchant for jests, for being witty in both the smart and the funny senses of the term.

The play is a little uneven in that it moves from episode to episode in More's life without a strong sense of connection between the scenes. Various court room scenes tell us more about More's character but do not point us to his eventual decision and fate. I still found it fascinating reading and would not mind seeing a stage production of this play (which is the proper way to experience a play, after all).

The book also has several appendices with textual analysis of the additions and deletions to the play, a close look at authorship of various parts, and some passages from source materials. I only skimmed through this part since it was very scholarly and not my main interest.
