1934/1946 Photoplay Edition - Its publication was timed with the release of the movie. Minor stains to boards. Pages are clean and unmarked. Dust Jacket has small chips, stains and minor tears. The spine of the dustjacket is faded. Overall a nice example of this title.

YOU MADE THE BED, YOU CAN LIE IN IT!
By Greggorio!
This book is a riveting classic of duplicity, love found, lost, and then found again, even eighty years after its first publication date. It has moments of gut wrenching suspense interspersed with examples of heartless cruelty, and innocent, young, sweet love. The writing is taut, sufficiently descriptive and perhaps most surprisingly, the story is still relevant today.

The best laid plans of mice and men can be lain flat by the simplest of things and early in the book, a cat of all things spoils the party for our two duplicitous love birds.

i find it hard to believe that two people who can be so cruel and heartless can ever amount to anything and if fate or karma has a say in the way things turn out for any of us in this world, then young Cora and the tramp Frank Chambers don't gave much to look forward to. And they won't get any sympathy from me.

This book is a classic of the genre. Those with any interest in crime, suspense, noir, or even the odd love story should get something from reading this delightful work of literature. Full marks for this one.

"The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry"

Set in the backdrop of the 30s Depression, Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice typifies hard-boiled roman noir, with seedy characters aimlessly drifting towards nature's dark side. We see this epitomized in Frank and Cora, whose existences are two-faced and bleak, their ideal happiness seemingly at the expense of others. Yet, Cain aptly takes you along with their schemes, and with a minimalist approach to narrative, exposes his character's flaws and sins. With deceptive, dishonest and generally "no good" people, Cain's novel uses dangerous situations, murderous plots, and gritty suspense to keep you entertained.

Cain sets the stage for his gritty novel when drifter Frank Chambers stumbling in to the Twin Oaks Tavern while checking to see if the coast is clear. When he's introduced to the owner's wife, Cora, it sets in motion big trouble ahead. Taken to one another, Frank and Cora begin an illicit affair and concoct a scheme to bump off Cora's husband. Whether it's Frank's bad nature that rubs off on Cora, or whether she's just a naturally rotten person too is hard to say. Maybe Cora says it best, "We're just two punks, Frank." A perfect murder, however, might not be so perfect.

What Cain brings to this novel is a simple approach to narrative and dialogue, yet effective turmoil and suspense. It is dialogue heavy at points, and at times I found the dialogue a bit confusing (identifying who was speaking), but mostly Cain uses simple, snappy dialogue to hit you quick, often with a cynical tone. A fun part of the read was just following the characters attempt to outmaneuver each other, like Frank and Sackett playing cat and mouse during questioning.

One can read The Postman Always Rings Twice and be reminded of what a noir should feel like, with shady, but street smart characters. It is a quick, easy, short novel to read, but in its one hundred plus pages, it does leave a taste for wanting to read more Cain noir novels.

"Existential Dreadnoir"
By Mike H
Talk about being years ahead of time. Before there was "Psycho" and "The Stranger," there was this 1934 novel by James M. Cain, a dialogue-driven, first-person narrative in the form of a diary by a man on death row.
While I still haven't figured out just where the title of the book relates to the story (who cares?), what I have figured out is this novel just plain works. This page-burner is a half-day read at best. It's as though someone lit a fuse on a stick of dynamite and you read faster and faster until it all blows up on the protagonist of the story and his lover, two killers who are in their relationship for the money, sadistic and masochistic carnality and, ironically, love.
The book stuck with me for days. Cain didn't waste any time on the flowery descriptions common with works of literature -- no talk of the sounds of leaves crunching underfoot beneath a sky of azure. He jumps right into the eerie plot and takes you into the minds and actions of two amoral people and what they'd do for money and their own brand of twisted love.
Many reviewers call it noir. Others would say it's full of existential dread a la Camus. I call Cain's unique style "existential dreadnoir,' and it's insanely readable and impossible to put down. Grab a couple cups of coffee, read it in five or six hours and be prepared to examine your thoughts for at least a couple of days.
Unsettling and karmic and full of irony, it's titillating crime reading at its best.

This is the textbook I used for my Ethics class at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. It is a fantastic collection of ethical thought spanning 2,400 years. I was very surprised to realize how much of our own ethical thought, as well as legal system, is based on the beliefs and essays of previous philosophers. The best parts of this book are the introductions. Because this book is composed of exerpts from larger works, the introductions do a splendid job of giving the authors' historical background and explaining their writings. The introductions are so clear and concise that one could probably just read them and understand the ideas and arguments perfectly.

Review
"Revolt Against the Modern World is destined to remain an essential work and frame-of-reference for anyone seriously involved in native European spirituality." (Michael Moynihan, Vortru)

"Evola does not write in abstract philosophical language but in lively prose, filled with fascinating and concrete details. Given a basic grounding in history and culture, one can dip into the book anywhere and find new twists and reinterpretations. Such an encounter with a totally original mind is a rarity in these days of bland consensus, and a thrilling one whether one agrees with Evola or not." (Joscelyn Godwin, Gnosis Magazine)

Tradition and Trancendence vs. the Modern World
By zonaras
REVOLT AGAINST THE MODERN WORLD by Sicilian noble Julius Evola formulates the doctrines and ideals of ancient tradition as embodied in the Indo-European ("Aryan") myths and ledgends of the Hindus, Germans, Romans, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Sumerians, Chinese, Japanese, Aztecs and Incas. Christian beliefs, especially those of Catholicism, and Islam's Koran also figure in this concept. Although Evola's ideas could be categorized as being occult and esoteric, they have absoloutely no relation to the "New Age" and humanist types of belief widely popular today. There is little in REVOLT about human brotherhood and "luhv," as these modern ideas come from inferior spiritualities that were opposed to Tradition. The concept of Tradition, as being self-existent from what is "above" and which is "transcendent" is very non material and abstract, so it is rather hard to put a finger on it. Furthermore, Evola's spirituality is not for everyone, which in fact, is the whole beauty of it.
Mankind, especially the denizens of the West, have lost touch with the divine, trancendent and superindividual elements in their lives and social structures. The current modern world is called the 'Kali Yuga' in Hinduism, the 'Iron Age' by Hesiod and the 'Age of the Wolf' in the Nordic Edda. The characteristics of the modern world are radical egalitarianism, confusion of gender and caste rolls and the non-functioning of divine regality. Evola is pro-caste system, showing that disorientation occurs when individuals within castes are unable to fulfill what their status in life.
There are many areas in this book which differ from most occult thought. Evola is strongly anti-feminist, and disdains female based spirituality as being opposed to the masculine principles in tradition. This is evidenced by the glorification of Heracles for having killed the warrior Amazonian tribeswomen, among other examples. Female sprituality tends to be regressive, which symbolically brings people back towards the darkness and unconsciousness of the womb rather than onward to greater action in the light, as embodied by masculine orientated spirituality, the Solar principle. The fact that the word "Aryan" appears about five times on nearly every page is also not in vouge. Evola voices contempt for the breakdown of the traditional family structure, the increased rate of divorce and sexual promiscuity.
In Evola's final analysis, he comes out against spectator sports as a mere plebian pastime, against dance concerts as the epitome of the mindless human mass under control, and demonizes modern day science as being the "science of dead matter." As far as religious outlook is concerned, Evola belives in some kind of myth that the ancestors of the Indo-Europeans came from a distant land in the north (Hyperborea, likely a vegetated Greenland before the Ice Age), and rejects Darwin's theory of evoloution. There are a good number of anti-Christian statements, but his assessment of Catholicism is relativly positive. As to God's Law, traditional men believed that the Law was given by the Divine from above to guide man, in keeping with the Biblical teaching. Evola is against the concept of religion as being merely moral and humanistic speculation without any unifying rites of worship. The tone throughout is very pessimistic, and his quote from a Hindu text describing the Kali Yuga that describes America down to the last detail. However there is a note of optimism: Hesiod wrote that he was glad that he was not born in the Iron Age. Evola disagrees with him. Anyone who is standing among the ruins in today's modern world in the name of what comes from above will be a greater hero then the ones in the ages before. As it was written on the Kamikaze aircraft, "You are gods who are free from all human yearnings."

The Revolting Modern World
By Amazon Customer
Evola examines the different ages of society as spoken of in ancient sacred texts in religions like Hindu. The golden age is ruled by sacred kings, the silver age is ruled by the warrior aristocracy, the bronze age is ruled by merchants, and the iron age is ruled by the plebs or serfs. We are currently in the age of iron, according to Evola. Evola believes in the decline of society as it moves farther from the golden age. His erudition is both broad and deep, having read most of the important works of societies from different ages all over the world. He justifies the authoritarianism and hierarchies of the golden age and he criticizes the decadent philosophies of subsequent ages. The sacred texts and traditional society advocate a hierarchal order.

He is extreme in his justifications of tradition. What about widow burning, isn't that wrong? --Well no, not really. In the traditional society, a woman is to sacrifice herself totally to her husband, so if he dies, she is to go out with him, otherwise the community would have contempt for her.

What about harems, ten women for one man, doesn't he think this is wrong?-- Well no, not really. If a woman is in a harem, she is learning to overcome her jealousy and sacrifice herself to her man, whether he is good or not. Women are to be totally dedicated as lovers and mothers, and become completely feminine, getting rid of everything masculine within them. Men are to become completely masculine, getting rid of everything feminine. This is how they perfect themselves as feminine and masculine spirits in traditional society.

What about the caste system, doesn't he think this is awful? --Absolutely not. In the traditional society, a person was considered to be born into a certain caste for good reason, the gods had determined it to be so. The birth was their karma. If the father was a barber, then his son would be a barber.

Is the caste system is unjust or oppressive? No, in the golden age, people were in total agreement about being in a certain castes. Only the outcasts or pariahs who had left their castes were totally despised. If the sacred king performed the rites to the gods in a solemn and exacting manner, society kept its connection with the divine, which kept the parts of society in good order with everyone doing their function without complaint. If the king began to regard the sacred rites as mere formality, then society began to lose connection with the divine and rebellion, discontent, and disorder began to occur.

The first to rebel would be the priest who were in the caste just below the king. If the priests rebelled wanting the authority of the king over both temporal and spiritual matters, this would begin the cycle of subversion of the castes beneath. The serfs and merchants would rebel against kings, warriors, and priests and women would rebel against men`s rule. This would start the decline that would bring us down to the iron age.

Do serfs and merchants have any real significance in this life or the hereafter? --Of course not. In the traditional society, the best of this life and the hereafter belonged to higher castes--nobles, heroic warriors, and priests. Only higher castes should own land and have privileges. In the afterlife, if a noble has lived a heroic life, he will go to Valhalla. When people of lower caste die, they merge into the totem or stock of their ancestors; their standardized personalities do not survive.

What are the characteristics of the bronze age moving into the iron age?--These ages are ruled by merchants or serfs, so the emphasis is on the economy or the common people. Society is a formless mass consumer society with hardly any distinctive noble personalities. People are restless, hopping from job to job or looking for the next thing that will thrill their bodies. There is no real transcendence; materialism and production reigns. There is a quantity of overproduced, cheap, and lousy goods. Merchant ethnics such as the Jews have power as a false aristocracy of wealth. A third estate society of merchants is America. A fourth estate society of plebs is the communist Soviet Union. Representative government, constitutionalism, and nationalism will eventually lead to a socialist and then a communist dictatorship. Communism is a wicked inverse of the legitimate rule of the king in the golden age.

What characterizes a Civilization of the Mother or a goddess-worshipping society? In the golden age, people worship a masculine and solar god. Men are from heaven, women are of the earth. The mother society worships the earth and fertility. People are buried, instead of cremated. Promiscuity rises, men are held in contempt, and the brotherhood of man is espoused as dogma. Goddess societies are inferior to God societies. Such societies are in a decadent stage.

Does Evola think Christianity is a good, traditional religion?--Catholicism is certainly superior to Protestantism and it has some good traditional elements in it, but there too much of the mother in that religion. Too much emphasis on the brotherhood of man, too much pleading and praying to God when the ancient sorcerers of the golden age commanded the gods. There is too much emphasis on equality and especially with Calvinism, the prosperity gospel and glorification of lower caste work. It also espouses the strange doctrine of the immortality of the soul. Only heroes and nobles are immortal. The commoners actually have no hope or fear in the afterlife. For them, there is no heaven and no hell, only personal oblivion.

Will decadence ever end? --Yes, according to the Vedas, the golden age shall rise again after the iron age has exhausted itself.

Evola's book is good for studying the mindset of the ancient world and of aristocrats, although egalitarians may say he has a biased interpretation or that the "sacred" texts are not to be revered because they merely justified an unjust order.

Restoration - The Return to Tradition.
By New Age of Barbarism
The Modern Age is falling and the West is in an era of decadence. The darkest of all the dark ages, what the Hindus called the Kali Yuga, is before us and Ragnarok (Twilight of the Gods) is at hand. Tradition has been trammeled upon by modern utilitarian, pragmatist, and collectivist thought and the once sacred has been made profane. Mass-man is so caught up in collectivist thought and meaningless activity that he cannot be saved. Only a select group of elite traditionalists preserving the traditional Weltanschauung can restore a transcendent order to the world after the fall of this era. An ascetic neoscholasticism is needed to preserve the tradition intact while this cycle comes to an end.
This is the message of Julius Evola in _Revolt Against the Modern World_. In this book, Evola fully dispels the modern myth of progress and reveals it as nothing more than a cover for a decadent society. Evola spends the first part of this book and much of the second part expostulating a traditional world order based on the idea of immanence-transcendence, before it's break-up at the end of the Middle Ages. He explains how an occult band of knights, members of the warrior caste, preserved tradition in the form of chivalry, during this period. However, with the advent of modern times, this tradition has largely been lost to us. Evola develops a myth of man's origins in a Golden Age, a Hyperborean race at the pole. A conflict developed between North and South, and between "solar" and "lunar" forms of religion. This conflict was at the heart of medieval Catholicism, and was reflected in the growing separation between priest and ruler. Originally, Evola argues, the Church sanctified the monarchy (the emperor) by a special rite. However, when this practice ended it made possible conflicting national loyalties to split up the medieval picture. With the Protestant Reformation which produced a strong emphasis on individualism more damage was done to the traditional world. As such, the world of tradition was lost and covered up by a world based more and more on utilitarian, hedonist, and ultimately collectivist principles, especially as witnessed in the French and Russian revolutions. This is the grim state of affairs we find ourselves in today. (Evola leaves off with a view of Europe "enclosed in the pincers" of America and the Soviet state, with America becoming more and more collectivist in nature and thinking.)
Man must return to the values which are transcendent if he ever is to create a meaningful life. And, this is precisely what is absent from today's empty, hollow society. The philosophies of radical individualism and collectivism, nationalism and communism, pervade every aspect of our existence. And, we have lost much. Only by a return to tradition can we hope to achieve a new existence with a newfound meaning.
Julius Evola was a fascinating character with much of interest to the dreamer and the mystic. Unfortunately, he allied himself with fascism briefly; however this is not the true basis for his thought.

Review
Originally published as My Religion in 1927, this Helen Keller classic has been revised and edited, in keeping with Keller's original wishes, by Ray Silverman, providing a strong blend of her original title and her autobiography, essays, letters and lectures in an integrated volume considering her religious values and reflections. Enjoy a well-done editing job which provides a smooth assembly of Keller's thoughts. -- Midwest Book Review

From the Back Cover
Helen Keller traces her spiritual development, revealing her mystical, ecstatic aspect, in this revised and expanded edition of her spiritual autobiography. "Emanuel Swedenborg's message has been my strongest incitement to overcome limitations," she proclaims.

Swedenborgiansim, with its concepts of a universal spiritual reality and brotherhood, a loving god, and an afterlife in which no one would suffer from limitations and handicaps, appealed to Helen. She drew much inspiration and insight from the Swedish seer's writings and his enthralling presentation of morality, calling them "the light in my darkness, the voice in my silence." (From the Foreword by Dorothy Herrmann, author of Helen Keller: A Life)

Keller herself was without conceit; her own words make her a more appealing figure than the woman glimpsed in old newsreels. Her view of her life is motivated by joy and gratitude. (The Bloomsbury Review)

Exploring these writings gives us a more intimate view of Keller's joyous celebration of life and transformative spiritual vision." (NAPRA Review)

[This book]. . . presents an inspiring picture of this remarkable woman's affirmation of the power and triumph of the spirit (New Age Retailer).

About the Author

Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. The story of how Keller's teacher, Annie Sullivan, broke through the isolation imposed by a nearly complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become known worldwide through the dramatic depictions of the play and film The Miracle Worker.

Beautiful book. Helen Keller was truly a very special person.
By Larry Wagner
Beautiful book. Re-edited from her own original work, "My Religion", and made more coherent.

Helen goes into some detail about what makes Swedenborg's Christian doctrine such a beautiful Christian religion for her, and how it gave her the inspiration to live a life in dignity and inspiration to others (!) and to overcome or deal with her handicaps for almost 80 years.

It has a few funny moments, such as her description of nature walks with an elderly friend. With her uncertain speech and his elderly hearing, he would have to ask her to repeat herself, but to do this he'd spell a question in her hand. With his advancing arthritis, his shaking hands letters could be difficult for her to decipher.

She is an amazing writer, inspite of total lack of sound or sight to experience those senses. Despite total blindness and deafness, she writes with vibrant color and imagery.

Lady with a Black Umbrella, by Mary Balogh

Lady with a Black Umbrella is the digital reissue of a previously published and long out-of-print novel by New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh.

Giles Fairhaven, Viscount Kincade, does not believe his life can get much worse after his purse is stolen at an inn before he has paid his bill and when he is set upon by three ruffians in the inn yard before he can leave.

But it does grow worse when a little slip of a lady, clad only in a flannel nightgown and wielding a large black man's umbrella, comes to his rescue and puts his assailants to rout and then--after he has left--pays his reckoning at the inn, plus the money he lost the evening before in a card game with a fellow guest, plus what he owed the barmaid with whom he spent the night. The ensuing gossip is almost too much humiliation for Giles to bear.

Yet when he finds and confronts Daisy Morrison in London, far from being cowed by his displeasure, she declares with sunny good nature that if he insists upon repaying the slight favour she was able to do for him, then he can recommend a lady sponsor to her so that she may find a husband for her younger sister among the gentlemen of the ton. Inexplicably, Giles finds himself agreeing. His troubles are only just beginning…

One of her best..
By Layla Halabi
The first chapter alone will have you laughing is stitches.. The completely delightful, completely misguided Daisy is used to managing everyone and everything around her. When she sees a man accosted by thugs, she rushes to his rescue, complete with cold cream and nightgown. Her weapon of choice is nothing less than a black umbrella, and to the Viscount's shame, she actually succeeds in driving them off!
The Viscount is proud, handsome, arrogant, and completely eligible. And he's NOT happy with having a slip of a girl rescue him and embarrass him publicly. Daisy wants to set him up with her beautiful and meek sister. But somehow, she finds herself gravitating towards him herself, and to his utter disgust, he finds himself equally gravitating towards her.
This book is for keeps despite being quite short. You'll enjoy the characters and the dialogue. Mary Balogh takes a few historical licenses, but they don't affect the story in any way. Besides, you will enjoy the dialogue and the twists and turns so much; you'll probably not even notice them!

My favorite Mary Balogh novel
By Carol Mello
I bought a copy of this novel, new, a long time ago in a bookstore. Though new, I remember the book was dreadfully mangled. Pages and the cover were torn and creased. After skimming the first chapter, I bought it anyway. I am so glad. I am reviewing this to boost up its composite rating! Because it truly deserves the highest rating possible.

Daisy is delightful from page 1 to the end. Daisy is a managing but lovable spinster of 25. Those she manages do not always appreciate her efforts on their behalf and sometimes her well meant actions backfire on both herself and those she is trying to help.

For all the trouble she causes, she is a tiny thing with a huge braid of hair coiled like a crown about her head. At her home in the country, she is the queen of all she surveys. She looks younger than her age. She underrates her own beauty. Her family and neighbors know her faults but love her anyways, including her deceased papa who sold his coal mines so Daisy would not try to rescue all the miners after his death.

The novel begins with Daisy and her beloved sister Rose (whom Daisy considers so beautiful, she is wasted in the country) on the road to London for a season for Rose. They have stopped at an inn for the night. In the morning, Daisy is gazing out her window into the stableyard below and spots the handsome Giles, Viscount Kincade, waiting for his carriage. She begins to daydream about the unknown stranger (Giles) romantically rescuing her from a fire when she sees two men begin to beat him up. Then a third joins in, pinning Giles' arms to his sides. Daisy is incensed at the unfair attack. She rushes from her room, barefoot, in her nightgown, with lemon oil on her face (to fade her freckles) and a big black umbrella. She beats off Giles' assailants with the umbrella. Instead of being grateful, Giles' is embarrassed to be rescued by the odd looking madwoman with the umbrella. He beats a hasty retreat. Meanwhile, Daisy discovers that Giles had been robbed of all his money and left debts at the inn. She pays all of his debts, including a barmaid prostitute and a gambling debt.

When Giles sends money back to pay his debts, he discovers that his rescuer, named Daisy Morrison, has paid ALL his debts -- including the embarrassing ones. His brother, Reverend Arthur Fairhaven, thinks the story of Daisy shows her to be a courageous and generous woman. Giles does not agree.

When Daisy arrives in London, she discovers the relatives she meant to stay with and whom she meant to introduce Rose to the ton are out of town for an extended period. Rose wants to return home but Daisy refuses. She hopes to strike up an acquaintance at the hotel they are staying at. One day while walking with Rose in Hyde Park, Daisy espies Giles. Rose begs her to leave but Daisy waves her parasol to catch Giles attention. Rather than make a scene, Giles grimly acknowledges Daisy and asks where she is staying so her can repay her tomorrow for the debts she paid at the inn (and soundly chew her out).

Meanwhile, the mysterious gentleman at the inn who Giles had gambled with, has spread the story of Giles' rescue by Daisy (with all details) about the London gentlemen's clubs. When Giles visits his club he becomes the object of many ribald jests, much to his chagrin. Due to Giles extreme anger, his brother Arthur insists going with Giles to visit Daisy at her hotel to prevent Giles from strangling Daisy. There Arthur meets Rose.

Daisy asks Giles the favor of introducing Rose (and her) to the ton. Giles has no intention of doing so, but his brother Arthur steps in and offers their cousin, Lady Hetty Parkinson, as a sponsor for them.

This is just the first three and one half chapters and does not include the delightful and humorous conversations or thoughts of Giles and Daisy.

I do not see how one can say the end of the book does not live up to the beginning. The last page is laugh out loud funny. Daisy is a delight to the very end and the forebearing Giles has some wonderful lines too, especially the last sentence. Buy it and see if you do not agree with me!

Desperately wanted to like it more but...
By zonnebloem
After reading reviews, I truly wanted to enjoy this book more. I don't particularly like romance novels with gratuitous sex scenes or make a point of seeking out romance novels in general (have read Kleypas and Courtney Milan on occasion) but I do prefer novels where the main characters grow along with the story/with each other. While sweet and endearing, at times even hilarious, this novel provided little by way of development. The hero spent a little too much time fantasizing about how to best wring the main heroine's neck (dangerously close to Twilight territory here) and not enough time learning to appreciate her for who she was. I found their flirtations light but repetitive, almost bordering on "hit rewind then play" in terms of originality. I found myself paging through unnecessary pages and pages of these meetings between hero and heroine, trying to find the magic of the opening scene (it's hilarious), but ultimately I was unable to keep myself interested for long. I'm giving this novel 3 stars instead of 2 because the premise of it is so interesting I wonder what would've become of the story of she had attempted to rewrite it now. The first meeting between the two main characters is definitely worth reading!

Points in its favor: sweet and no distracting sex scenes; lovable heroine with legitimate virtues and faults (maybe a little too out there for historical accuracy but it's a novel); quick read for filling in some spare time.

Points against: shallow hero with little character development either within himself or the story or with his intended love interest; love between the two characters bordering on unbelievable; I was actually rooting for the heroine to fall in love with the hero's best friend... legit hoping that the author would decide midway that that storyline would be more promising or at the very least more interesting.

Mostly updates with 18 more chapters
By benji4u
This is simply a revamped Morgan compared to the last one. Mostly everything is in color, more bold points made throughout each chapter, but the same easy to follow layout, and more logically organized. Still missing some of the little things like where the PISS pins are located, and they took out some of the arterial line curves and some other little things that I can't remember during my speed reading of the book that irked me (just adding all the tiny details would have made it a more comprehensive book). Other than that they added a chapter on perioperative management, and a whole section on periop care (mostly reorganized chapters that already existed and added I think about 3 more), separated neurosurgery from people with neurological/psychiatric diseases, and overall added over 200 more pages. It's a good remodel, same good foundation, with some of the new medications and technological advances in the field of anesthesia. Would definitely recommend it, especially for people that like visual stimulation while they are studying.

Composite Steel and Concrete Structural Members: Fundamental Behaviour, by D.J. Oehlers, M.A. Bradford

This book deals with the analysis and behaviour of composite structural members that are made by joining a steel component to a concrete component. The emphasis of the book is to impart a fundamental understanding of how composite structures work, so engineers develop a feel for the behaviour of the structure, often missing when design is based solely by using codes of practice or by the direct application of prescribed equations. It is not the object to provide quick design procedures for composite members, as these are more than adequately covered by recourse to such aids as safe load tables. The subject should therefore be of interest to practising engineers, particularly if they are involved in the design of non-standard or unusual composite structures for buildings and bridges, or are involved in assessing, upgrading, strengthening or repairing existing composite structures. The fundamentals in composite construction are covered first, followed by more advanced topics that include: behaviour of mechanical and rib shear connectors; local buckling; beams with few shear connectors; moment redistribution and lateral-distortional buckling in continuous beams; longitudinal splitting; composite beams with service ducts; composite profiled beams and profiled slabs; composite columns; and the fatigue design and assessment of composite bridge beams.

Review
D.A. Netercot
...this book is very strong on explaining the basic load transfer mechanisms associated with composite beams, slabs and columns. It also provides a detailed coverage of the fatigue behaviour of composite members. All these issues are treated at length using a mixture of descriptions of the basic phenomena (assisted by very clear figures), presentation of the mathematical basis and selected worked examples.... It will, form an excellent library volume, since its international style and concentration on fundamentals means that it should not date too quickly. For those with a real interest in composite construction, the clarity of presentation and comprehensive coverage make the book a very worthwhile investment.

This book covers composite structures in a very comprehensive and complete manner.... Many advanced topics are covered...suitable for postgraduate courses and will be invaluable to design engineers encountering these problems. The many diagrams and worked examples are excellent and very clearly presented.
