No delusions only a misinterpretation needing corrections

This review made prior to mine is totally erroneous and full of errors in understanding of the teachings of this book.

Let's start with the first statement "There is so much nonsense passed off as 'scholarship' in 'Dr' Ashby's books that it really boggles the mind." Yet this statement is made only to calumniate the author and not refute the scholarship that the author provided with historical dates, locations, anthropological evidences, Greek historical quotes book sources for statements made within his opus. Next statement "These books come out of the black nationalist movement, where fabricated history is passed off as authentic. Where every African-american is descended from the Ancient Egyptians, nevermind the fact that their tribal origins can be identified from simple DNA testing." Yet the author of the book never made the statement in this book nor any of his 60+ books of African Americans being from Egypt, on the contrary Dr.Ashby's book does state the biological fact that ALL PEOPLE ON EARTH have their ancestry from Africa and that all humanity is related as brothers and sisters. Dr.Ashby is a teacher of Yoga "union"not the racial rhetoric that the previous reviewer is attempting to place on him. The previous reviewer stated "Ashby and his ilk are selling fantasies as reality and contributing to the intentional deception of ethnic origins that have caused so many blacks to feel lost and unrooted in America." Again there is no fact in this statement merely opinion based on erroneous understanding of the teaching in this book and deep seeded issues that has given the reviewer prejudice to this opus.

"The genetic fact is that African-americans came from Africa. It is also a genetic fact that they did not come from Egypt, but from West Africa." To this statement I reply again that the author of this book never made such a claim, however, many tribes in west Africa do state they migrated from north Africa and some state Egypt, so I advise the reviewer to do his research on the west African tribes and their migration there before just making such a blanket statement. Then the reviewer again makes a prejudicial comment stating "To deny this by creating some bogus fantasy origin does great harm to the ancestors of these people as well as the people themselves. This book encapsulates the worst kind of lie and propagates a contempt for tribal origins that once was the specialty of slave owners." Dr. Ashby has not stated in any way, shape, form, or fashion the origin of African Americans in particular being from Egypt. What the author has stated was the origins of the ancient Egyptians from Ethiopia and the origins of human life stemming from central Africa at the origin of the Nile in Mount Kilimanjaro and Kenya which science confirms. I would suggest the reviewer question the author himself instead of being so prejudiced and biased on the magnum opus entitled "The Kemetic Kemetic tree of life". The author encouraged feedback and questions so as to clear up any confusion and misinterpretation of the teachings, the website is on the back cover of the book and once you get on the website you can email the author instead of slandering him before you get the gist of what he's saying peace and blessings.

A very important book if you are searching for answers to the mysteries of life

I had been reading and doing research on ancient Egypt for some time. Mostly, I was fascinated with the pyramids, Giza, Sphinx, etc. The further I delved into the subject, the more interested I became into who these advanced, very intelligent ancient Egyptians were...what did they know? But the most intriguing question I had was: What was their view on the cosmos and creation? I myself come from a moderate Muslim background so I know that view only. My personal research indicates that the 3 Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) borrowed much of their beliefs from ancient Egyptian spiritual philosophy, used it as the foundation, and then each of these religions added their own extras. So that tells me that the ORIGINAL Kemetic source would be the best to learn from. Every time I was doing research, Dr. Ashby and The Kemetic Tree of Life kept popping up. So I knew the cosmos was telling me to check it out. I read the Amazon "Look Inside" and I loved it! It was exactly what I was looking for.
I was new to higher consciousness and metaphysics so I did not know much except for what organized religion tells me to believe (but that's another story). Dr. Ashby's book was not difficult to understand. You can tell his sincerity in the writing, you can feel it creep into your soul. It was like reading a book that offered me a new way to look at the world. It will take some re-reading, but this is a very important book if you are searching for answers to the mysteries of life from one of the earliest civilizations.

About the Author
Sheri Spaine Long (Ph.D. UCLA) is Editor of Hispania - A journal devoted to the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese, the scholarly journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Formerly a faculty member, department chair, and study abroad program director, Dr. Long rose to the rank of Professor of Spanish at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy. Most recently, Dr. Long served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Languages and Culture Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is a specialist in language teaching and learning. A regular presenter and invited speaker at national and international conferences, Dr. Long delivered over 100 talks from Havana to Beijing and across the United States. She actively engages the field and continues to publish on the integration of leadership development and language learning, the language profession, and Madrid in literature. Dr. Long published more than 50 articles, chapters, and reviews and her recent co-authored textbooks published with Cengage include Nexos. Introductory Spanish, 4th ed., and Alianzas. Intermediate Spanish., 2nd ed., Cuadros. Introductory and Intermediate Spanish., among others. She received the prestigious Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in 2009.

Sylvia Madrigal, a Yale graduate, has been in the foreign language publishing field for about 20 years. She has worked at Houghton Mifflin and at D.C. Heath, where she helped develop and write activities for the award-winning Dimelo CD-ROM series. She has authored a variety of educational materials, including video scripts for HM's TravelTour video and Caminos del jaguar.

Kris Swanson has an M.A. in Hispanic Studies from Brown University. She has been in the foreign language publishing field for about 15 years. She currently works as a consultant and freelance writer, editor, and project manager.

Maria Carreira is Associate Professor of Spanish at California State University, Long Beach. She holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Illinois, Champaign. Very Accomodating

The spanish classes I take in college use all the Cuadros books for each specified level. I like the books a lot they are clear and have helpful indexes at the back that summarize concepts learned in the previous books.

It's hard to imagine now, but when The Love Boat premiered in 1977, it was considered so sexually suggestive that Princess Cruises almost didn't allow the show to film on its ships because they were afraid it would give people the wrong image. Yet, in the long run, Garin points out, the series proved to be a critical factor in repositioning ocean cruises as an attractive luxury for middle-class consumers. Just a few years ago, Princess and three competitors accounted for almost 90 percent of the cruise industry's $13 billion annual revenues; when Princess began merger talks with Royal Caribbean, rival firm Carnival swooped in, made the deal themselves and wound up controlling more than half the market. Carnival's founder, the late Ted Arison, provides this lively industry history with one of its most engrossing narrative threads, from the running aground of his original flagship's maiden voyage to his emergence as one of the world's wealthiest individuals. But Garin's as interested in the ships themselves as he is in the boardrooms, and he turns up disturbing stories of corrupt labor practices and cover-ups of sexual assaults of passengers by crew members. Others followed suit, and everyone learned to make money in the laissez-faire environment of international shipping. Fueled in part by the TV show The Love Boat, the popularity of cruises exploded, inspiring the construction of today's party boats and drawing the attention of governments to buccaneers of the business. An even treatment with a fascinating storyline...

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...

Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

One of the all-time best business case studies

I cannot say enough about the strong points of this book. Garin would have earned much praise for simply recounting the history of Carnival's extraordinarily rapid conquest of the global cruise industry -- earning founder Ted Arison at his death the title of 'world's richest Jew' and leaving son Micky at the helm of a company that took just over 25 years from its 1971 birth to reach annual profits of $1 billion. Beyond Garin's entertaining story of how the Arisons created both an industry and a fortune, there is so much more to this book: it's a wonderful social history of American vacationing and travel rituals and preferences; a tale of entrerpreneurial takeovers and strategizing every bit as intriguing as 'Barbarians at the Gate'; an investigation of corporate corner-cutting in the labor, environmental, tax, and other regulatory fields as eye-opening as 'Silent Spring'; WildWest-style episodes of mutinous crews and commando-led cruise-ship rescue operations; marketing coups and blunders; the impact of TV's 'LoveBoat' series; along with Caribbean cultural and economic lore from Bob Marley to CARICOM (the island nations' version of the EU). This massive reporting effort is wonderfully well-organized and unfailingly pleasurable to read.

As the owner of a travel agency, I found this book fascinating. It gives a great history of the 2 major cruise lines, Carnival & Royal Caribbean, and the history of their rivalry over the years. I am not sure that this book is for the everyday cruiser, but if you are involved with the cruise industry I would consider it a must read.

Absolutely the best preparation I did for the PE Exam

I'd spent about 3-4 months working through a thermo textbook, a fluids textbook, and Lindeberg's Practice Problems 12e to accompany the MERM. About 1 month prior to the exam, I ordered this, ferreted myself away into a University library during spring break week with the books I was planning on taking to the exam, and took this practice exam under time pressure. It's the single best preparation activity I did for the PE exam. It showed me what the test was actually like, what the time pressure felt like and how fast I needed to run the calculator. It actually showed me that I could relax a little bit. The test showed me where I was competent and where I needed to improve. I used the following month to shore up where I fell short, and as a result I tackled the PE exam with no problems.

This is a fair comparison to the test, I feel that it's absolutely representative.

Great study tool for the PE Exam.

The question format is very similar to that of the real exam. I used this book to simulate the exam by setting a timer for 4 hours to do the morning problems, took an hour lunch break, then four more hours for the afternoon problems. It was a good way to get a feel for the exam. It also helped me know what what areas I needed to improve.

About the Author
Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established him as one of the greatest literary lights of the 20th century. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He died in 1961.

Some of Hem's very best stuff

I wasn't sure about a Hemingway play. Sure, Papa is one of my favorite fiction writers, but could he write for the stage as well as he wrote stories?

The Fifth Column proved to be every bit as good as Hemingway's best fiction. The deep characters and fascinating, realistic sequence of events are brilliantly written. The reader can picture the drama as if it was being acted out before him.

I've recommended this book to several people; some are hesitant to read it because the story's setting (the Spanish Civil War) doesn't interest them. But in Hemingway's fiction, the setting is not as important as how people and the things that happen to them are communicated on the page. He was a truly master writer, able to make characters and situations fascinating regardless of what the reader thought of the story's setting.

One suggestion: I read the four short stories before I read the play, and I strongly recommend that sequence. Reading the stories first enables you to see transition of the events from real life to Hemingway's mind, then to the page, and finally to the stage. Seeing this transition will give the reader an appreciation for Hemingway's ability to so brilliantly put into words his own observations and experiences.

If you are a Hemingway fan, or if you just like good fiction, it doesn't get much better than this.
