Sheryl Whitlock obtained her BSMT from University of Delaware, followed by Clinical Rotation at University of Iowa, and then an MA from Beaver College in Glenside, PA. Additional education includes a master of arts in education from Arcadia University. Whitlock's career began with the Medical Technology Program Faculty at Rolling Hill Hospital in Elkins Park, PA. She then transferred to Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA, where she worked as a Faculty Member of the Medical Laboratory Technician Program. Sheryl returned to the University of Delaware in 1998, this time assuming the position of Laboratory Coordinator of Student Health Services. Sheryl has more than 30 years of work experience in all areas of laboratory medicine and as an educator for both clinical laboratory science and clinical laboratory technology programs.

A sloppily edited text which makes a challenging subject harder than it really needs to be.

This a dreadful book - it's rife with editing errors. It looks like it was cut-and-pasted from a MT level text without any review. Many of the end of chapter review questions have duplicate answers or reference material not covered in the chapter. The graphics are poorly edited as well, with just a straight list of bullet points when some of those points should have been headers. On page 82, half of an equation is missing - our teacher wondered why we weren't getting how to calculate the number of units you would have to test in order to find one that was negative for two or more antigens! This a difficult text for students who take attention to detail very seriously. Choose a Pearson textbook instead.

the technology it shows are new and pretty practical. So it is a friendly book, which uses understandable words rather than fancy professional phrases. If there is something to improve is that sometimes there are spelling errors, which may lead to misunderstanding.

Best Crochet Resource for the Dollar

This book is actually a compilation of materials from Jan Eaton and others. So, the text and instruction is excellent. I have many crochet books, and this one is my favorite. I learned how to do Tunisian crochet using it, and it has some of my favorite Eaton stitch patterns in it. As far as instructional, I thought it did an excellent job. No book will be as good as having a private instructor, but this comes close. I had no trouble understanding the instructions, and I thought the photos were as good as any other book on the market, with the added bonus that it features instructions for Tunisian crochet and has a beautiful stitch library. Also, the binding lays flat, so you can set it down while trying it out. If you have trouble learning from texts, I'd suggest a video or DVD usually available at your local public library. Oh, and I thought the instruction in the book clearer than that of Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting.

Does not work well as a handbook or a guide!

Okay, so I bought this book, with the anticipation that it would actually live up to it's title "The Crochet Handbook and Stitch Guide," and it would be something that I could actually add to my extensive crochet/knit library. When you buy books that have titles such as this, you do so with the understanding that it is efficient and all-inclusive in the world of crochet. This book didn't come close, and can be described as generic at best. I can honestly say this, because I am an advanced crocheter. There are much better resources out there on the internet, that offer better tutorials and information. To make this review easier for you, the average consumer, I will list the Pros/Cons:
Pros-
1) The book can lay flat, which can make it an easier read while you are working
2) The pictures are colorful
3) Font is readable
4) author includes pictures of some of the crochet symbols also used in charts

Cons-
1) The book starts off with talking about different crochet hooks, but didn't include a size chart that converts US sizes with other sizes. There was also no mention of other types of crochet needles or there uses. Examples would include the double-pointed crochet needle, Crohook, circular crochet needles, specialty needles that can be used by those who have carpal tunnel/arthritis/other wrist & hand issues, and steel vs aluminum vs plastic needles, etc.
2) There is also mention of other items to include in one's crochet bag, but there is no detail of how to use these (e.g. markers, row counters, waste yarn, notebook, etc.). For example, the book mentions that one should keep notes when they work. A novice crocheter reading this most likely say to themselves "Keep notes of what, how often should I take notes, etc."
3) The section that describes yarn is too brief and generic, and it doesn't offer a pictorial to show how these yarns look when they are crocheted.
4) Also there are various pictures of motifs throughout the book, but there is no mention of what type or brand of yarn was used to get the effect.
5) There is no instruction for left-handed crocheters.
6) While there are pictures of someone making the stitches, the actual walk-through of how the finished stitch is obtained is unclear. It would have been more beneficial to show arrows of how to actually produce the stitch than to show snapshots of before and after. The reading instructions are way to wordy and unclear.
7) Limited in the types of stitches discussed
8) When attempting to show stitches that involve a lot of detail (such as a spike stitch), it is more helpful to show this using yarns of different colors. It creates another dimension which allows the reader to see what type of effect it will have on the finished product.
9) Working in the round section is way too confusing. The author doesn't explain working in a round vs. a ring.
10) When discussing external vs. internal increases, there is no mention of when to do either and why.
11) One of the worst sections of the book was weaving in loose ends/fastening off. The book suggests to do this with a tapestry needle. Um, hello we are crocheting?!! This is creating more work, and making the task more difficult than it has to be. Weave in and/or fasten off using crochet!
12) Attempts to demonstrate a popcorn stitch, and mentions how a popcorn can be made from a group of separate stitches or can share one stitch at the base. There is no mention of how to complete the latter.
13) Unclear instructions on how to crochet with beads.
14) Crochet motifs used are very dull and outdated.
15) Sewn seams vs. crochet- there is no picture of the final product to show the differences between (e.g. how they look, when to use, etc.)the types of seams used.
16) The book shows various crochet symbols and then throws in one chart. There is not a detailed explanation of how to read the chart, etc.
17) Almost all of the book is written with chatty wording that didn't do a good job of explaining

In short, there are other issues of the book. I hope that the average consumer is able to get an idea of how limited the book is on the information. There are other great books out there especially on Amazon. Edie Eckman's books are a great place to start. The internet has some great starting places too such as crochetpatterncentral.com or mypicot.com. Save your $$, and don't bother to buy this one.

This is the book I've always wanted. To the negative poster, it's not supposed to show more than a square of the pattern. The instructions are excellent. I love the ring binder feature...it lays open on my craft table! Thank you!

A Sophisticated Cocktail Trip Through Japan

Well, I just received Japanese Cocktails, by Yuri Kato and it is a great addition to my cocktail book library. There are authentic Japanese cocktail recipes, with some originals mixed in. What I didn' expect was to learn about the history of Japanese cocktails and get a feel for various regions of Japan.

It is a beautiful book that will look great by your bar or coffee table. Vibrant pictures acompany each recipe. You are also given tips on where to find the traditional ingredients.

I can't wait to start making some of these...

I got this book for my little brother and he thinks it's great. There are easy to use instructions, a good variety of drinks, handy little tidbits about Japanese culture and really nice pictures. All in all, a good purchase.

About the Author

F.S. Hill Jr. is a Professor Emeritus of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He received a Ph. D. degree from Yale University in 1968, worked for 3 years in digital data transmission at Bell Telephone Laboratories, and joined the University in 1970.  He is the author of numerous articles in the field of signal processing, communications, and computer graphics.  He has been editor and associate editor of the IEEE Communications Society magazine.  He is also a fellow of the IEEE.  He is co-author of the book Introduction To Engineering and has won several awards for outstanding teaching.

 

Stephen M. Kelley and Dr. Hill met in 2000 in connection with a National Science Foundation distance learning project.  Since then co-teaching courses in computer graphics at the University of Massachusetts and co-authoring Computer Graphics using OpenGL, 3rd Edition.  Stephen Kelley recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Interactive Multimedia and Computer Graphics along with a minor in Information Technology.  Stephen also runs his own web development and consulting company, Intangible Inc.

Do not get the new version

I'm taking a computer graphics class and this book is used. I bought the new version, the paperback edition. Apart from being completely black and white including the so called color pictures, it's made with very cheap paper and grainy text. It may not look pretty and I could have done with that but it's also missing pages, on page 383 to the next page, it jumps to page 388, and that is simply unacceptable. It's a risk we take when we order online and can't see the merchandise beforehand but after years of ordering through Amazon, this is the first time I've received such a low quality product that is downright incomplete.

The two stars is because even with typos and grammatical errors the book's contents are good. It goes through the basics of computer graphics all the way through ray-tracing. It does so with many example programs which I thought was nice. The source of the programs is available on the book's website. The nice thing about this book is that it explains mathematical concepts with a certain simplicity not found in other books of this kind.

It's a shame good content has to be weighted down by cheap tactics of the publisher. I'll be more cautious in buying online and will definitely avoid this publisher after this experience. So if you want the book, I suggest you find an old version with the hardcover.

Excellent computer graphics tutorial

This is a good solid introductory text on computer graphics theory and programming. Note that the book uses OpenGL rather than teaching it, so if you are looking for an OpenGL tutorial you will be disappointed. For that consult the classic "Red Book" on the subject. This book does throw in a couple of advanced topics - fractals, virtual realism, and ray tracing, for example. I really liked how the explanations were very detailed, and how pseudocode accompanies the explanation of every algorithm. The pseudocode is C-like and is therefore easily understandable. Also, the author makes excellent and frequent use of very excellent figures to get his points across. I also liked all of the practice problems, because they are good sanity checks on whether or not you really understand the material.

I will add that I was at first hesitant to add this book to my collection, because in the early 90's I used a textbook by this same author in a class I was taking on computer graphics, and it was about the most awful thing I have ever seen in print. There were a couple of good chapters, but most of it was paragraph after paragraph of rambling text without equations, codes, or anything that approached a tutorial. I wasn't a novice to this subject at the time, either, so it wasn't a lack of knowledge on the subject that made me hate that book. I'm saying all of this just in case this was your last experience with this author, don't let it prevent you from getting this book. Hill seems to have learned from his past mistakes, and I highly recommend this text. I notice the table of contents shown is for an older edition. This edition has changed considerably, so I show the new table of contents for the 3rd edition next:

You'll note that the main difference between the second and third editions is that Hidden Surface Removal and Fractals no longer have dedicated chapters, but additional chapters on other subjects have not been added. The HSR material is now part of another chapter, and the Fractal subject matter is part of the appendix. One positive difference is the addition of some good material on the OpenGL Shading Language, which is a hot topic these days. Also, the material in the appendix on Postscript has been eliminated.

Makes learning Computer Graphics **fun** !!

This is an excellent first book on Computer graphics using OpenGL - very accessible and enjoyable at the same time, with a good breadth of coverage as well.
I took a course under Prof. Hill while he was a visiting Prof. at the Indian Institue of Science, which used the draft of this book. We had a great time learning graphics with Prof. Hill - his enthusiasm is infectious, and this comes out in the textbook as well. We were able to develop a 'Tour of the Tajmahal' by the end of the course, with lots of special effects (like texturing, flying objects) - it was **beautiful** :-) !!
The book covers all the usual material expected in a Computer graphics textbook - transformations, modeling, texturing, hidden surface removal ........, as well as somewhat 'advanced' topics like ray-tracing.
The writing style is engaging and the explanations are very clear - this is a book that makes it easy to learn graphics. It also contains helpful tutorial material for all the maths background required, and a really huge number of exercises - obviously, you need not do all of them, just take your pick.
Please note that it is **not** a tutorial/reference on OpenGL - it merely uses OpenGL as the tool of choice for writing graphics code. If you want to learn OpenGL, please check out the 'Official guide to learning OpenGL' by Woo et al - we used that text in conjunction with this in our course, and it's really helpful for getting upto speed with OpenGL.
All in all, this is an excellent choice if you want an uptodate text on Computer graphics using OpenGL.

He thought it was funny and I don't know if it helped

I bought this book when it first came out 15 years ago for a young friend who was glued to the tv too much of the time. He thought it was funny and I don't know if it helped, but it seemed like a good way to tell him what I thought about too much tv rather than the usual Charlie Brown adult gibberish kind of comment. Now I have a couple of grandsons who are glued to their iPads way more than they should be (in my elderly opinion) and I've ordered it again...Besides that, I'm a major Chris Van Allsburg fan. His illustrations are excellent and one of my main requirements when buying picture books for my children and now grandchildren is that the art in them is probably going to influence their aesthetics later on, so it had better be the best.

Very average read

I am an avid reader of all types of novels but I love romance. I have read quite a few romance novels and this was basically very very average. Meet Caitlin Bennett poor little rich girl who has no one in her life. She is a mystery writer and keeps herself locked up in her penthouse apartment. She starts to receive hate mail and is pushed in front of a car. At this point she knows that someone is stalking her. Her friend asks his brother to come protect her, and enter Mac, the bodyguard. These two have never liked each other and now are forced to spend time together until the stalker and of course later we find out he is a killer is caught.

I don't expect much of a plot when I read a romance. In fact, I'm used to the plots being "corny" and "underdeveloped." But not only was this story line silly as a "mystery" but the romance was awful. The Caitlin character spent most of the time whining, but you were supposed to like her because she treated her chaffeaur like one of the family. She's extremely wealthy and thinks someone is stalking her, but never bothers to hire private security. Her publisher gets a bomb threat and doesn't hire private security. When she is finally assaulted, one person comes to her rescue. This story had the usual flaws I find in many poorly written stories (e.g. the killer enters her apartment very easily through the roof). This was so hard to swallow - how many of the rich and famous have their homes poorly equipped so just about any nutcase off the street could enter. How many rich people would stay terriorized and not hire anyone to protect them? (The answer is zero, only a poor person would stay terrorized for months). Also the heroine's actions are just plain dumb (e.g. going on tv) And finally the killer was so predictable you knew who he would be in the first few chapters. Because in every poorly written story I've read, that's who the killer usually is. Very average read.

Possible Ghost Writer?

I have read many books by Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall and this one was a major disappointment. The writing was terrible. The clues as to the killer were so obvious, you knew who he was in the first couple of chapters. In addition, the phrase :Oh, My God" and it's variations were used to express every emotion from suprise to disgust to dispair - over and over again. I had to force myself to finish reading it just to see if maybe I had been wrong about how the murderer was. Unfortunately, I wasn't. Sala has written so many good books but if I had read this one first, I would never have bought another one. I'm hoping she didn't really write it - that she used a ghost writer for this one.

Great suspense, but romance falls short...

This was a very good story, but the romance got in the way. I am a diehard romance reader and thought that a romance/suspense would whet my appetite, but this story didn't do the job that well. The suspense was awesome and does keep you guessing till the end but the somewhat 'corny' romance got in the way of an excellent plot of a woman being terrorized by a crazed stalker...

She is afraid for she has been recieving deranged letters from a crazed fan for almost 6 months, but the latest one bears a grim warning, she needs to tell the police before he finds her.
A horrible event forces her to hire an ex-cop, 'Mac' McKee, her best friend's brother and her personal antagonist for the past years as her personal bodyguard.
With his protection she begins to feel safe once again, but when two more victims are found brutally murdered, each bearing a unique resemblance to Caitlin, they realize that SHE is the ultimate target and the crazed killer is now coming to claim his final victim!
Can Mac save Caitlin from the man who despises her? Will he lose his heart to her in the process? A true thriller that will keep you guessing and the end is a shock...
I liked Caitlin, she was strong and witty, but Mac needs some work. He didn't hold my interest and his character wasn't developed well enough for me to believe his affection for her. The romance between the two was bland and kind of 'corny'. Too much 'mush' when there should've been resistence between them. I say this because throughout the beginning, we are led to believe that these two irritate one another and are attracted to each other at the same time. But what we get is 'mush' right off the bat with little to no dispute.

Perfect for Modern Business Traveler

Bought this book because it was recommended by a guest speaker in the class. I just read about the country I really know about and it seems like the author has really done his homework. The minute details are covered about culture and traits which you will not find in any talk show or 'polished' publications but so significantly important when doing business in foreign country. For example, don't say "Thank you" to Indians after they serve you a meal... It's a form of repayment, almost an insult and doesn't build relationship. Rather, invite your host for the same hospitality. That's how you build business relationships!! Also, Brazilians tend to be more analytical than their Latin American counterparts! Or you have to print your business cards in Portuguese and English when doing business in Brazil. They aren't too thrilled about being talked to in Spanish!! They don't consider themselves Hispanic! I found it cool to know...

GREAT tool ~ true to cultures, very useful personally & professionally. For anyone struggling, or upset with other people of another culture this really helps understand them. I have heard people share how hurt they were by others, or want to change others. What they didn't understand is the cultural difference, that it's not about them, and how very very different we all are based on what we know. It could really help not just show respect business wise, but help relationships if a person is open enough to listen & learn.

This book was absolutely interesting. Since I had been in the real estate business and we had many foreign buyers interested in real estate in this area, you need to know the proper etiquette when working with them to find a house or commercial building. This book has it all.

A copy should be sent to the President since he doesn't seem to know how and when to book, or it should be sent to the WH protocol office.

Something as simple as a "thumbs up" which means okay to us, means something else to many foreign people. Gestures, conversational tips, hand shaking, clothes that you are wearing. In one country they will put down what you are wearing -- in jest.

Even if you are not working with foreign clients, it is an interesting book and you can learn so much about other peoples and their customs. It also teaches you what to expect as to how they treat and think about us. Some did not like dealing with a female real estate associate, so I would have to work through a male associate -- and of course share my profits!

Fascinating read!
