About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey K. Liker is Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan and President of Liker Lean Advisors. He is author of the international best-seller, The Toyota Way: 14 Management Principles from the World’s Greatest Manufacturer, 2004 (26 languages, over 900,000 copies sold), and has coauthored eight other books about Toyota including The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership (2011). His articles and books have won twelve Shingo Prizes for Research Excellence. In 2012 he was inducted into the Association of Manufacturing Excellence Hall of Fame and in 2016 inducted into the Shingo Academy.

Liker lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife and children.

Karyn Ross is a Lean consultant and executive coach focused on driving sustainable business culture change in service organizations. She has worked with companies such as Paychex, PrimePay, Zurich Insurance, and National Taxi Limo to help them develop a culture of problem solving and improved business practices. Many of us in leadership roles read a lot in the hopes of finding "that book" - the one that changes your paradigm around your role in transforming your organization, clarifying questions you've been asking yourself or ones you didn't know but you could somehow feel. For many, this is going to be "that book". As a healthcare executive and lean practitioner, I found The Toyota Way to Service Excellence to be full of key insighfs for my leadership. ANOTHER GREAT BOOK FROM JEFF LIKER. MUST READ, ABSOLUTELY!

Jeff shares with us another great book on the Toyota Way, not just by expanding the thinking to service, but also by clarifying again his deeper thoughts about the Toyota Way itself, in its clearer expression yet. Jeff and Karyn also make a wonderful job of showing very practical ways to jump into service issues with the Toyota Way, in a language adapted to service cultures and largely free of manufacturing lingo. A delightful read, and a real success. Read it, use it!

The Toyota Way to Service Excellence by Jeffery K. Liker & Karyn Ross
First, I highly recommend this book. As a retired Vice President of Quality Assurance, Plant Manager and college professor I am very familiar with and have used the Toyota methods extensively. In my experience I have found it is much more difficult to get buy-in to the Toyata way from service and administrative personnel than from manufacturing personnel. Liker and Ross have done an excellent job showing why and how the Toyota way can work in the service areas. They also did a great job showing why it must be done if organizations want to be more successful. I must caution that one size does not fit all and each organization must implement in a way that fits their organization. I received a free copy of The Toyota Way to Service Excellence by Jeffery K. Liker & Karyn Ross from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Many thanks to NetGalley.

Jose Silva has uncovered the almost magical potential of our minds, decades ago. Yet truth never gets old. The incredible influence that we have when it comes to other people is exemplified in this book. We can make reaching our goals child's play when we use our God given gift of reaching the Alpha and Theta states of mind. That is how intuition can be explained, among other things. Visualizing while in Alpha the goals that we want to achieve, first, will make those goals easier to manifest in "the real world". Anything by any Silva instructor (such as Robert B. Stone, Burt Goldman, etc.) not to mention Jose Silva himself, is an eye opener into this ability that we all possess.

I have Silva's original blue book the Silva Mind Control Method and the original cd's on his first course and I feel the materials that I have stated here are all you need to establish yourself as a good Silva Mind Practitioner. Subjective Communication is mentioned in the CD's and how to develop it. This book was more of a medium to push other products and seminars--very short and hardly any instruction. Any instruction mentioned was already covered in the cd's like I already stated.

About the Author
David J. Anderson leads a management consulting firm focused on improving performance of technology companies. He has been in software development nearly 30 years and has managed teams on agile software development projects at Sprint, Motorola, Microsoft, and Corbis. David is credited with the first implementation of a kanban process for software development, in 2005. David was a founder of the Agile movement through his involvement in the creation of Feature Driven Development. He was also a founder of the Agile Project Leadership Network (APLN), a founding signatory of the Declaration of Interdependence, and a founding member of the Lean Software and Systems Consortium. He moderates several online communities for lean/agile development. He is the author of Agile Management for Software Engineering: Applying the Theory of Constraints for Business Results. Most recently, David has been focused on creating a synergy of the CMMI model for organizational maturity with Agile and Lean methods through projects with Microsoft and the SEI. He is a co-author of the SEI’s Technical Note “CMMI and Agile: Why not Embrace Both!” He is based in Sequim, Washington, USA.

This book is not just for technology people, and it's great

I don't do technology development, most of the work that I do is on the business side of the organization, understanding requirements through business process and business architecture (as described in the pages of the book Rethink).

Starting as early as the foreword, there are great takeaways in every section of this book which is a very quick read. I will admit that I skimmed some of the software development segments because that's not what I do, but here's a breakout by some of the early chapters:

FOREWORD - the notion of the importance of batch size is vital when looking at organizational constraints. It's something Goldratt never addressed in the initial Theory of Constraints, but it's a great point. There's a lot more about that as the book moves along, but it's a great first point.

CHAPTER ONE - Context is vital when identifying organizational constraints. If someone goes into a meeting and points out that something is constraining the organization, even if they may be right, the other people in the room may have a different context and dismiss the newly identified constraint. Chapter one also goes into good depth about seeing that no two projects or teams are the same, and that there are specific, quantifiable risks in how you compare them.

CHAPTER TWO - Here is one of two chapters where Anderson does a great job of stepping outside of the work environment to explain that the notion of kanban, which literally means signal cards to indicate when it's OK to proceed with work, applies to lots of situations in the outside world, and his example of the cards they hand out to entrants to a park in Japan, and then collect when they leave, as a very simple and low cost way of managing the attendance capacity of the park. With such a clear example, the core idea of kanban, Anderson ensures that the reader understands one of the most basic ideas of the book.

CHAPTER THREE - This is where the book starts to get really quantitative about measuring and optimizing the throughput of work, and here's where Anderson gets into one of the other core ideas of the book which is to limit and manage the amount of work in progress (WIP). As he points out (graphically) there is a linear relationship between WIP and average lead time, which he explains very clearly. The other big point he makes in this chapter is that there is a non-linear relationship between defects and the quantity of WIP, which means the more WIP, the higher the defect rate.

CHAPTER 11 - After several chapters about continuous improvement, how you go about limiting WIP, and more software development related cycles (which broadly still apply to non-tech people as well in terms of managing efficiency), Anderson then gets into a subject that I think is vital, which is identifying the Class-of-Service definitions for objects of work, which include Expedite, Fixed Delivery Date, Standard Class, and Intangible (which he admits is probably not the best word for it), and in my experience it is so important to have those sorts of definitions attached to blocks of work, I am confident that I will use them as he defines them. While he does talk about process definition and how you need to make processes strict and policy based, I happen to think those belong more in the realm of business architecture because business capabilities as artifacts are so much more durable than processes (as defined in the classic Hammer & Champy model).

There's a lot more in this book, but it's so clear and so well written I think a lot of business people, as well as technology people can learn a lot from this book and start applying it to their work immediately.

Kindle version quality

I am new to this field of knowledge and yet, the style and the contents of this book was digestible. As a daily practitioner of different levels of support, defect resolving - a self managing all-in-one team - I've got hints from this book to implement my Kanban system. There were substantial amount of links to pieces of literature in the book, including personal Kanban.

I've read the paperback version of the book first than decided to buy the Kindle version. The picture quality was not daunting in the paper version either, but in the Kindle book the pictures are useless. The picture format is jpeg and it has color information too, which adds up to space required and has no added value on the grayscale display. The text is unreadable on the pictures as jpeg is the worst lossy format for this purpose.

The books contents is superb. The practical advice in the book helps in implementing your own Kanban. The theoretical background is strong and empowers the reader to dive in the cited literature on the field of SPC (statistical process control) and on other highlighted topics in the body of knowledge of management.
The only problem I've found is the poor quality of pictures in the Kindle version. Hope it will get fixed!

David provides a comprehensive guide to implementing Kanban in a software development/maintenance environment.
Covering the mechanics, dynamics, principles and rationale behind why Kanban is a so promising framework for managing the work of a variety of teams and groups and being an evolutionary-based change management driver.

Kanban is the practical approach to implement Lean Software Development, and this book is the practical guide for how to start using Kanban, and how to adapt the system for advanced needs.

The book is clear and flowing, even though it covers some quite technical material. I would recommend it to Development managers, Project/Program managers, Agile Coaches/Consultants. It addresses concerns/needs of Novice as well as those already familiar with Kanban and looking for advanced answers.

Even if you don't intend to implement a kanban system, there are a lot of techniques and ideas that are easily applicable to any product development/maintenance environment, agile or not.

Bottom line, highly recommended.

For nearly twenty years David Dawson was Lucian Freud’s assistant, companion, and model. Freud moved in rarefied, powerful circles and was tenacious about protecting his privacy. He also carefully avoided distraction. With few exceptions, he wanted only those he knew well, like the late Bruce Bernard, to photograph him. David Dawson, however, was in a unique position, and as Freud became comfortable in the presence of Dawson’s camera, photographing became part of the daily ritual of the studio. These photographs reveal in a most intimate way the subjects and the stages of paintings in progress. Few artists, if any, have had their lives and their work recorded over such a length of time.

Despite Freud’s sense of privacy, his circle was wide. Among those who regularly visited Freud were figures from the art world, including art historian John Richardson, and painters David Hockney, and Frank Auerbach, along with model Kate Moss and friends such as the Duke of Beaufort. The book begins in Freud’s old studio in Holland Park and then records the artist in his eighteenth-century house in Kensington, the first floor of which was his final studio. Dawson also photographed Freud on his visits to look at masterpieces in various museums in New York, Amsterdam and Madrid. The book ends with views of the rooms in which Freud’s own extraordinary collection of paintings was hung. It is the only record of the house itself before the dispersal of the art on his death, but ultimately, the photographs create an intimate portrait of the man. The final images in this book are of the hanging of Freud’s work in his posthumous London exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Haunting and fascinating, this is a revelatory document about one of our most important and influential painters.

About the Author
David Dawson was born in Wales in 1960. After leaving the Royal College of Art, he combined his work as a painter with becoming an assistant to Lucian Freud; he remained with him until Freud’s death in 2011. His photographs, alongside those of Bruce Bernard, were published in Freud at Work in 2006. Dawson’s paintings have been shown at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, and by Marlborough Fine Art. His photographs of Lucian Freud have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in 2004, at Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, London, and at the Sigmund Freud Museum in the former Freud apartment in Vienna in 2013. He divides his time between London, Wales, and New York.

You cannot help but be a little disappointed in this book when none of the reviews tell ...

You cannot help but be a little disappointed in this book when none of the reviews tell you that there is hardly any written content. It is basically a picture book. I'll agree that the photos are revealing, that the content is appealing, and the potential was so astounding! But the letdown, when you are done reviewing the photos, and have so many questions about the man, about the author, about the work. Little is said, which kind of makes you feel that the author is angling for a future "tell all" to bring in additional cash.

, A Great Portrait of the Life of Lucian Freud

As a painter myself and admirer of the work of Lucian Freud, I've read many books and articles about him. I checked most out of the library, but actually purchased this book after getting it from the library as I think it is something valuable to another artist, and it has been made and compiled by a remarkable artist himself, David Dawson.

David Dawson must be quite an interesting person to have spent so much time with Lucian Freud and to have helped make it possible for a genius like Freud to paint more easily due to Dawson's assistance. He also took the many photos which comprise this book. The photos are extremely beautiful, arresting works of art in and of themselves. I wonder actually whether Dawson isn't a natural photographer rather than a painter as they are all such good compositions and use light and shade much as Lucian himself used it in his paintings.

I had to own the book for the photos and for Dawson's very tasteful reticence to gossip or write much at all. I believe that an artist deserves to have a certain amount of privacy attached to his life. What after all do we know about Shakespeare or many great painters. Do we really need to know all the stuff about Van Gogh when his sunflowers are perhaps "enough". There is already too much written about Freud. (in my view of course) Dawson simply lets himself and the artist he is depicting speak for themselves.

I hope Mr. Dawson will do another book of photos, and again recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Behind the scenes

A Painter’s Progress is a collection of 241 behind-the-scenes photographs taken by David Dawson, who was Lucian Freud’s assistant for nearly twenty years. Many of the photos taken in Freud’s studio include nude models, portrait sitters, and his whippets, Pluto and Eli. There are photos documenting several iterations of works in progress. Other photos include Freud viewing artwork in museums, meeting prominent people, having breakfast, and relaxing at home. There are also photos showing Freud’s posthumous exhibition being installed at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The messy walls are a quirky feature of Freud’s studio. “The walls were covered in semi-dry, clotted paint scraped from his palette when he cleaned. The paint was left to dry out of reach, building up over many years like deposits of guano on rock. He also used any bare wall to scribble reminders about a particular painting, phone numbers or paint colours that were running low. I would come to check the walls as a kind of ongoing diary.”

Awkward is a word often used by critics describing Freud’s paintings. “He always tried to catch a scene rather than compose it. Speaking to Bill Feaver, Lucian has said, ‘If I’m putting someone in a picture I like to feel that they’ve fallen asleep there, or they’ve elbowed their own way in. They are there not to make the picture easy on the eye or more pleasant...’ He liked things to look awkward in the way that life looks awkward. The idea of a story didn’t bother him as he thought ‘everything’s a story’.”

“He would come very close to the sitter to get more information from different angles. Once he had what he needed he would clean the palette of its previous colour with his knife, adding paint to the wall. Then he would remix a new colour for almost every brushstroke. He didn’t want a single colour to dominate a painting. Once the fresh colour was mixed he would look again at the sitter, make any further adjustments to the colour, and when he felt he had enough information he would paint. He wanted his portraits of you to be how you are.”
Dawson also includes some direct quotes from Freud about painting his subjects:

'You have to trust what you see and what you feel… I never put anything into a painting that I don’t actually see when I’m painting… I am always reacting to what is there. You have the person in front of you and you are trying to relay something of who the person is as a physical and emotional presence.'

'If you don’t over-direct your models but focus on the physical presence, interesting things often happen.'

'Being naked has to do with making a more complete portrait. A naked body is somehow more permanent, more factual. When someone is naked there is in effect nothing to be hidden. Not everyone wants to be that honest about themselves… That means I feel an obligation to be equally honest in how I represent their honesty. It is a matter of responsibility.'

'In a way I don’t want the painting to come from me. I want it to come from them.'

“As a sitter you held the position of being passive, with Lucian continually encouraging you. He made you feel that you were understood by him. He could not be shocked by any confession or by anything said. He was immensely interested in other people. There was always a sense of balance around Lucian.”

The book includes photos of Queen Elizabeth II posing from her portrait at Saint James Palace. “The Queen was very generous and cleared her calendar for the amount of time that would suit Lucian and give him every chance to complete the painting. Henrietta Edwards, a courtier, stepped in as the model when it came for the diadem [crown] to be painted. The following year he painted Henrietta’s portrait, Woman with Eyes Closed.”

Dawson describes Freud’s friendship with Frank Auerbach. “The depth of the friendship between the two was reflected in the fact that when Lucian was near to finishing a painting we would always phone up and ask Frank to come round. He was the one person Lucian would listen to. He would take something from what Frank might say about a painting. Frank would arrive at the studio at first light. Lucian was a huge admirer of Frank’s work and lived with many of his paintings. He told me that these paintings were the ones he wanted to live with, learn from, and inspire him.”

For painters interested in Freud’s materials, the book includes a list of Freud’s twenty favorite paint colors. The author also notes, “Lucian told me that the most helpful book on paint is The Materials of the Artist and Their Use in Painting by Max Doerner.”

The book has much less text than I expected. Given the author’s special access, I’m sure he has many more interesting insights and stories about the artist’s life, but maybe less is more. Maybe a picture is worth a thousand words. In any case, these photos offer an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the life of a contemporary master of representational art.

Be warned not a typical Ray Gordon Book

Absolutley amazing .... I have read many of this authors books and one really never has any idea of what you are going to get. His works are like a box of chocolates but full of only chocolates you really really love and others that you'll really really hate ....
This book rates 5 stars but not because I liked the book, let me tell ya I hated it, but rather it was written for a reader that throughly enjoys what I would call 'down & dirty' and delifinitely 'unwashed' erotica.
In this story, a hotel owner/manager in a tawdry part of London, Stokepot Towers, describes, from page 1 through to page 363, an unrelenting account of the sexual trysts and goings on of both the staff and the guests....
As an example of special interest are readers that may enjoy sex with food articles, which certainly seems to be a specialy of the kitchen in this hotel. Let it be clear that I certainly wouldn't want to eat a salad there ... LOLOLOLOL

This is a typical Ray Gordon book
The story line is ok if you can stretch incredulity that far. A policeman who is as thick as they come , a drunken chef, a nymphomanic waitress ,a ploice woman who needs warming up and an ice cold ex wife who just needs .
If you want a studious read then pass this by but if you want a book which delves into the sex life of a randy, ever hard hotel owner always looking for a quick one then this is the book for you. You can put it down and pick it up at any stage and you will never lose the plot, because there is not much of a plot to lose.

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!
An extremely funny and very objective look at life as a 'ski bum.' This book is impossible to put down so be prepared to get funny looks if you are reading on the bus or when you emerge from the loo! Chris' descriptive powers are accurate and subliminal. His self disarming style connects with any reader who has found themselves in any situation outside our comfort zones.

1.2 million Britons go skiing every year and most of them come back. Around thirty die through misadventure. Only a dozen or so are killed by avalanches, a few from crashing into immovable objects or each other, however the majority die in what are known as 'alcohol related incidents' - usually by freezing to death. This book is my skiing memoir and includes one fatal avalanche, a few crashes and numerous alcohol related incidents. It documents my transition from a city-living adman to a garage-dwelling ski bum and rookie ski instructor over four ski seasons in the French alpine town of Morzine. More importantly, it documents the price I paid for living my dream.
I also try to answer some difficult questions: what constitutes a 'proper job', what do ski bums do in the summer and what does being a 'good skier' actually mean? I explore skiing phobias and exorcise a few demons of my own, primarily a morbid fear of avalanches and an infamous run called the Swiss Wall.
I describe some of the people, from different nations, who have been my guests along with their domestic and gastronomic habits, and some notable French traits. I recall some memorable skiing adventures with the Ski Club of Great Britain and some of the guides and instructors I've skied with - some of whom were even more mentally unstable than me.
Currently the names of those mentioned in this book have not been changed, but they probably should be, in order to protect against the loss of friendships and possible litigation. However, everything described in this book, to the best of my recollection, actually happened.

Compulsory reading for any middle-aged man, or anybody who knows one.

I only bought this book as I ski and know Morzine well, so my expectations weren't that high, but it truly is a really enjoyable read. Chris's book is about what most of us middle aged men only dream about: escaping and turning a dream into reality, although that reality may not be quite what you expected. Laugh out loud funny in places (read in private - I annoyed my wife) and quite moving in others, I pretty much guarantee you won't be able to put it down. And don't be put off if you don't ski or know the Alps. If you are a middle-aged man, or aspire to be one, or have been one, or are (or were) married to one, you will definitely enjoy this book. If you really are a middle aged man and suspect you might be having a mid-life crisis, forget any self-help books. Read Chris's book and either put up or shut up!

'Drop in' - you'll enjoy it!

A really entertaining and easy read. For anyone who's been on skiing trips to the Alps, this will transport you back to those heroic days on the slopes and 'all-conquering' nights in the bar... and make you realise what your chalet host really thought of you! Thankfully, the witty, sometimes acidly funny observations are directed as much at the author as his guests, as he reflects incredibly honestly on the frailties and emotions which contributed to and accompanied him on the journey into and out of a mid-life crisis. The story of the 'journey' has enough reflective quality to make you think - but happily, it's mixed in with lots of snow, lots of skiing and lots of laughs. Chris thinks he sold his soul to an ad agency, but he's clearly still in possession of it - and keen that you should take a look. I recommend you do - you'll enjoy it.

I told Chris on snowheads UK that he has written a really enjoyable book.

Very rare that someone is willing to hold a mirror to himself and describe everything he sees, not just the good bits.

Well done.

Hope our paths cross in the future, and that Chris comes to Zell one day to see how exactly alike are the demons (and the guardian angels without whom I would never be writing this review!) and spankers like me!
