I Love Delicious Tacos

Googling something inappropriate is probably how I found Delicious Tacos. I was in for a treat and quickly abandoned my original search in favor of staying up all night to read his entire blog. He's one of those rare authors that can make you laugh out loud and then all of a sudden his vulnerability will strike you to the core and touch something in a hidden part of you.

For years now, I only check a handful of websites obsessively to see if there's anything new. Among those, Delicious Tacos is probably my favorite. He captures the essence of the human condition, he explores what it is to be a male and offers insight into the male/female dynamic that is unflinchingly authentic, for better or worse. He is a genius.

When my 21 year old coworker was considering getting an OKCupid (this was pre-Tinder) I told her to check out Delicious Taco's blog post on OKC. She came in the next day and told me she too had stayed up all night reading his every post.

Although he's commonly lauded as a pioneer of the manosphere, Delicious Tacos' special brand of social commentary has universal appeal. I imagine he has as many loyal female fans as male. He will always be one of my favorite authors of all time.

As a long-time fan of Delicious Tacos, I am glad to finally have a collection of his works all together in this well-arranged book. My only regret is that I don't have Hot Naked Tits on my bookshelf at home. Print it! It's a sure money maker for any publishing house.

Bought this on a whim based on the title and the author's "name"... and turns out that this is simply incredible. We're talking Houellebecq-incredible - detached and repugnant yet at the same time viciously intelligent and volcanically hilarious. Irvine Welsh without the brogue. A poor man's Nabakov without the weighty prose. Unrelentingly sharp, mesmerizing and modern.
Bret Easton Ellis wishes he could find this type of inspiration again.

Good only for microstakes players struggling to beat the game (NL2 to NL10)

There is a huge problem with people currenlty coaching microstakes.

Many coaches play currenlty those stakes, they are small winners and they do coaching just to make some money since they aren't able to make any money from the tables.

Other coaches have not played those stakes for years . They have memories about how online poker was in 2005 and they think that those stakes are the same today.

Try playing today ABC poker strategies to Pokerstars Zoom NL10 and you will be crushed from the rake. Try playing "ABC" or Harringhton style "TAG" (TAGFISH) at NL25 and you will be crushed by the opponents aggression you can't understand and can't handle

The only approach works today on those stakes is EXPLOITATIVE POKER at it's MAXIMUM.
Basic exploitative poker is not enough. You need to be an exploitative poker EXPERT to make REAL money on those stakes.

I bought and checked this book.

The author understands only the very basics of exploitative poker.

The book contains the fundamentals of exploitative poker you can use up to NL10 , explained with examples

The info on this book can help begginers to play microstakes NL2 to NL10 .

But I 'm sure that is not helpfull at all for NL25 grinders and for players with a good NL10 winning rate. .

The author looks like a guy who plays online poker up to 25NL regular, he has some obvious big leaks to his own game and there are a lot of things at poker he can't understand correclty. For example he can't even understand what is GTO, and he says that it is a non winning strategy. He also criticizes the "GTO gurus" for "telling lies" , and gives LIMP->RERAISE advise on his web site. Very funny.

In my opinion, this book has some value for very bad , losing microstakes players who want to improve .

If you belong to this category of players, here is a good and cheap opportunity to improve.
You will NEVER find someone to coach you on those stakes and to teach you those very basic things for only 12$.

If you try to find a poker coach for microstakes, most of the times you will pay much more than 200$ to get coaching for a few hours and you will get much less information , most of the times useless. It is hard and rare to find a good coach for those stakes.

For everybody who lose at microstakes, buying this book is really a very good investment

The author has also a coaching site and has there some free videos.

The book is carefully written . It doesn't have the draft form of other books. It uses colors and illustrations to make it easy to read and everything is fully explained .

The author is confusing some definitions and uses them differenlty than everybody else in poker. That's make the book harder to read.

What he calls a "weak tight player" is someone he plays loose passive preflop (play a lot of hands) and tight passive postflop . The standard definition for the "weak tight" is not this, it is tight passive preflop and tight passive postflop. (The author calls this "nit type 1".
But the standard definition for a nit is somebody who plays like a weak tight player but opens less hands) That's the author calls weak tight, it is really called a "loose fir or fold player"

He calls also "nit type 2" the "tight aggessive preflop-tight passive postflop" players. This is not used to be called "nit" . It is called again a "weak tight" 'player, who is aggressive preflop.

He doesn't refer at all to another very common and very exploitable type of player: "tight passive preflop" (never steals blinds, never resteal , very small opening range) and "tight aggressive postlfop" (loves to go all in in the flop or turn with AA and KK and get busted from sets)

Microbiology textbook

A good comprehensive test concerning all aspects of microbiology. There is a very useful section of photographs and graphics which demonstrate the rich variety of microorganisms that might be seen in a laboratory. This is a very good text with extensive detail for any level of college / university education and beyond. However, this text is large and heavy, which means that is stays on my shelf in my room instead of travelling with me to school.

A great book for one stop research

This is an excellent reference book. It is a bit much to use as a textbook as it has more more of an encyclopedia feel to it. Most chapters cite about 500 sources but can be as much as 1400 to give you an idea of the extent of the information condensed in this book. Key characteristics of bacteria are listed in charts in each chapter and some identification schemes are provided. This is clearly a text dedicated to bacteria (15 of 24 chapters). The remaining chapters are broader in their scope and cover things such as general microbiology practices, mycology, viruses, and parasitology.

I bought this book as a reference for the board certification exams in medical technology. It answered every question I needed to find an answer to and so much more. I passed my exams and I'm still using this book. If I need in-depth descriptions of an organism, it's all there. Medical technologists or students, you won't be disappointed with this book.

This led to the Age of Exploration and the expansion of the European kingdoms into economic empires. Yet as important as the compass is, its origins are shrouded in mystery. The small town of Amalfi, Italy, claims to be the birthplace of the inventor of the compass, but China has an even stronger case. Aczel examines the myths, legends, and facts behind the dispute and provides a logical, although not indisputable, conclusion on which nation can claim the compass as its own. Although the author is primarily known for his scientific books, Riddle of the Compass contains little or no jargon and a minimum of scientific terminology. A worthwhile and interesting addition.

Despite its brevity, this book covers its topic completely. In this detailed history, Aczel (God's Equation; Bentley Coll.) takes us back in time to Amalfi, Italy, where between 1295 and 1302 the compass as we know it was developed. Aczel points out, however, that the actual discovery of materials that followed magnetic lines, or at least consistently pointed in a specific direction (south), is attributed to the Chinese in 1040. The story of the compass is also the story of navigation, which the author admirably combines. Debunking the myth that sailors followed the coastlines of countries until they met their desired location, the author describes how they navigated the open seas using the sun, stars, wind, and even the migration of birds. While this book is not a page-turner, it is an accurate account of the important historical events that lead to the compass's development. Tellingly, Aczel grew up on a ship and was navigating straits in the Mediterranean long before he could drive a car. Recommended for public as well as academic libraries whose readers want to go beyond the account generally given in an encyclopedia.

The compass, Aczel says, was "the most important technological invention since the wheel" because its contribution to navigation "allowed goods to be transported efficiently and reliably across the seas and opened up the world to maritime exploration." Inspired by that thought, Aczel (associate professor of mathematics at Bentley College) set out to trace the history of the device. "The compass," he found, "was invented in antiquity in China, where it did not immediately improve navigation but was used in feng shui." It was the mariners of Amalfi, then a maritime city-state in Italy, who around 1300 transformed the instrument into the compass we know today. Citing it and other devices that only gradually found their technological niche, Aczel concludes that it "seems to be a law of nature that a technology is developed and then waits a long time for people to discover their need for it, rather than the other way around."

Accessible, entertaining, and edifying

Amir Aczel's _The Riddle of the Compass_ tells a sweeping tale spanning continents and centuries. While this tale includes some discussion of the natural history of the earth's geological composition, magnetic field, and recent research showing that certain nerve fibers in fish are sensitive to this magnetic field and may play a role in their migratory behavior, the book concentrates on the human history of navigation and how the development of the compass spurred commerce, trade, and the expansion of European naval powers.
He weaves into this tale a survey of maritime navigational techniques used in antiquity by the Greeks and Egyptians. He gives an impressively well-researched survey of the references to the compass in European writings, the earliest dating to 1187 by the English Augustinian Monk Alexander Neckam. Aczel touches on a number of unusual subjects that turn out to be connected to the compass in surprising ways: the Chinese art of feng shui, ancient Chinese divination practices, Aegean archeology, including a particular Etruscan chandelier, the travels of Marco Polo, the development of cartography and nautical charts in medieval Europe. Along the way he treats the reader to a crash course in Italian history ranging from the Roman empire, the Crusades, through the rise of the city-states Amalfi, Naples, and Venice, the navigational methods employed by the great Spanish and Portuguese explorers such as Magellan, da Gama, and Columbus, and some interesting trivia such as the real meaning and origin of the phrase "to sail the seven seas" and how a possibly misplaced comma bears on the identity of the man who at one time was thought to have invented the compass, and of whom the residents of Amalfi erected a statue as a tribute.
Like his earlier books, this one is accessible, entertaining, and edifying. The narrative has a natural flow and the stamp of Aczel's personal connection with the subject. (He spent much of his youth working on board a Mediterranean cruise ship that his father captained.) In places, footnotes would have been helpful. While there is a useful bibliography, certain passages in the text cry out for specific documentation. For example, he mentions that Jesuit priests in 17th century China ordered the prohibition, and even burning of books on the subject of feng shui. It would have been helpful to see specific documentation for such claims. Aside from this, _The Riddle of the Compass_ is an admirable book that uncovers a little-known history of the compass, a navigational tool so common today that we take it for granted, and discusses how, by radically improving maritime navigation, it changed the world by opening up new possibilities of commerce and conquest.

Readable, but somewhat off course

Aczel describes the compass as the second most important technological innovation in history, after the wheel. He then proceeds to wander through a series of brief histories without chronological order, giving disproportionate attention to a man who may or may not have lived in Amalfi, Italy. Aczel is at his best in capsule histories of maritime activity, but is frustratingly unsystematic in his chronologies and his descriptions of how the compass is used. He mentions the Global Positioning System, but does not tell us how it works. The figure titled "how the magnetic compass works" is misleading, as it shows the axis of the Earth's magnetic field coinciding with the Earth's axis of rotation. One gets the impression of a hastily written book.
