Ilona Carneiro is a lecturer in infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). She is a malaria researcher with substantial experience in teaching, developing and organising epidemiology courses.

Excellent introduction to Epidemiology

Having no previous experience or education in Epidemiology was not a problem with this wonderful resource. I was enrolled in Intro to Epidemiology via Distance Learning and was nervous about having limited access to tutors. The text breaks down complicated Epidemiology principles, terms and equations into a simple format understandable to anyone willing to take the time. Numerous real-life examples abound in the book and keep the reading interesting. I can't recommend it enough. Knowledgable and experienced authors make this a great introductory text.

Much to like - but also a few things to make you go "Wait... what?" - in the eight-issue arc WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN. There's no doubt at all that Wolverine is one of the most overexposed characters out there, having been affiliated with a boatload of teams (Weapon X, Alpha Flight, Dept. H., the X-Men, X-Force, S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers, and soon probably the New Brighton Archeological Society, the Yancy Street Gang and the PTA). But, admittedly, there's something so very cool about the guy and that vicious thing that he's the best at doing. I don't know that OLD MAN LOGAN is the best Wolverine story ever told. I certainly don't believe that it's the most relevant. But it's certainly one of the most fun and wild and memorable.

Set roughly fifty years in the future, and to spoiler readers of Marvel comic books, the bad guys finally win the whole shebang. The story begins with "Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell." and one of the things which bug me about this arc is that writer Mark Millar never does give us the score on just what went down with the cataclysmic fighty fight between the Marvel heroes and villains. We don't get the juicy details, even though we learn that, finally, finally, the bad guys got wise and realized that, together, they outnumber the good guys by a ratio of huge. Some of the most brilliant villain heavy hitters got together and coordinated simultaneous strikes on the Marvel heroes and pretty much eradicated them from the face of the planet. Fifty years ago.

Something truly horrific happened to Wolverine, and it scarred him so badly that he turned pacifist. Decades later, grizzled and white-haired, he's a struggling farmer trying to support his family, and nowadays he prefers to be called Logan. He's still tormented and so committed is he to not popping his claws that, when he can't make rent, he voluntarily takes a vicious beating from his landlords, who happen to be the rat-crazy, deformed grandchildren of Bruce Banner. Yeah, Logan's dirt poor farm lies in Hulkland (what used to be California). If you thought Mr. Furley was a horrible landlord...

Desperate for rent money, Logan reluctantly leaves his family and signs on for a sprawling cross-country trek with his old and now blind friend Hawkeye on a mysterious courier mission. So what we get for most of these issues is this hybrid of gritty buddy adventure and dystopian travelogue. Issue #66 presents us with a map of America as currently carved up among the supervillains. We note that the most significant demesnes fall to Hulkland, the Kingdom of The Kingpin, Doom's Lair, and The President's Quarter - and, right away, I started wondering who is this President. It turns out, whoever he is, he was the one who masterminded the heroes' downfall fifty years ago. It's also interesting that the villains only cared about ruling the good ol' U.S.A. and didn't give an eff about taking over the rest of the world.

WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN collects issues #66-72 of the ongoing WOLVERINE comic book, as well as the one-shot WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN GIANT-SIZE (but not really "giant-size" in terms of length of story). Mark Millar's post-apocalyptic vision is fueled by his usual outrageous, over-the-top brand of storytelling. But there's also this palpable sense of desolation, an elegiac tone, that surfaces as Logan and Hawkeye travel from wasteland to wasteland and witness the devastating fallout to what happened five decades ago. Decayed structures and bones of the fallen dot the landscape. Superheroes are become extinct. Even Spider-Man's granddaughter is wicked.

It's weird but this story arc is both a rapid read... and a slow read. It reads quick because Millar holds back on the dialogue and allows artist Steve McNiven to take over the narrative, and McNiven's art is really exceptional here, maybe the best I've seen of his stuff. It's cinematic and there are many, many iconic images of our growly Canuck. I'm guessing that his art is the reason for the horrendous scheduling delays, but after marveling at the finished product I tend to want to give him a pass. But, like with LEGION OF THREE WORLDS, OLD MAN LOGAN reads better as a collected trade. There's also the pace of the story, which at times is leisurely. Logan and Hawkeye end up meeting all sorts of baddies, but Logan is stubborn in his vow to stay non-violent, so the action initially isn't what we'd call blistering.

We don't expect Logan to stay a peace-loving gent, and so the anticipation builds to that inevitable time when he unleashes his inner snikt. Which he does in the last few issues - and when Wolverine loses it, he really, really loses it. Millar's slow burn approach then switches up to visceral scenes of slaughter, and oh that poor eviscerated cow. Lots of gratuitous and brutal maiming and blood-letting, but so much fun and, frankly, it's what we expect from a Wolverine story.

Two more things which bothered me. First, I wasn't too impressed when I learned the identity of the mysterious President, this guy not having much of a history with Wolverine and, so, ergo, not so much with the resonance. A more telling thing for me is that I can't quite buy into the big reveal of what happened to Wolverine 50 years ago, that tragic event which made him turn away from violence. Wolvie is the best at what he does, but I don't think even he's that good.

Despite all that, I think that OLD MAN LOGAN is slated for classic status, maybe right up there with Millar's "Enemy of the State" and Barry Windsor-Smith's "Weapon X" storylines. I'm reminded of the "Days of Future Past" X-Men story, not because OLD MAN LOGAN is as classic but because this is yet another possible future arc towards which the 616 Universe can veer. As of right now, OLD MAN LOGAN's is considered an alternate timeline. Still, if you're hankering for a peek at what becomes of this Logan, you should check out Millar's recent run on FANTASTIC FOUR, paying particular attention to the Nu-Earth/New Defenders/Death of the Invisible Woman arc (Fantastic Four: World's Greatest, Vol. 1), and also the Fantastic Force TPB (Fantastic Four) mini-series. Irregardless, I'm betting we haven't seen the last of OLD MAN LOGAN's world. And that's a good thing.

Unforgiven Meets Wanted

Mark Millar is a writer I very much enjoy, but he often seems to have trouble sticking endings. That has changed in this story as, from start to stop, it's massively well paced, enormously twisting, and ultimately satisfying. Bringing the sensibility of Clint Eastwood's magnum opus Unforgiven to the plot of the comic Wanted (which Millar also wrote), Wolverine treks across a land where almost every superhero has been killed and America divided amongst the remaining villains. Steve McNiven, teaming up with Millar again after Civil War, brings his A-game in every single panel, be it the ultra-violent battles or the gut-wrenching emotional moments, the Marvel universe has rarely looked so well drawn. I found myself reading it again the moment I finished it and catching all sorts of background references and hints, so it reads well the second, and I'm sure third, time. Absolute highest recommendation.

All the writers clamoring to write his comic are so concerned with what new and different thing they're going to do with Wolverine or what soon to be retconned mysterious thing from his past they're going to introduce, that they wind up completely messing up the character and the story line. (I'm talking to you, Way.)

Mark Millar actually does these things but he does them well and without messing up the character. Millar is an old school story teller, he knows that good storytelling is character driven- meaning that a good story establishes a character's values and then challenges them to reveal something about that character. By increasing Wolverine's characteristic, latent guilt (which was a crucial aspect of what originally made him an interesting character) to a level which he psychologically neuters himself, we learn more about Wolverine through his nonviolence, rage, and indignation that we ever could about him by an absolute clarification of his past (once again, I'm talking to you Daniel Way.)

Also, there's lot's of gore. That's a plus too. ;)

By this latter value in particular, the kitsch painter is able to work according to knowable standards that painting prior to modernism has established--standards that are “more than art,” for, as Nerdrum puts it, “the kitsch painter commits himself to the eternal: love, death and the sunrise.” Kitsch is a manifesto that recruits figurative painters both old and new, such as William Dyce, Paul Fenniak, Sampo Kaikkonen, Isaac Levitan, Osiris Rain, Ilya Repin, Giovanni Segantini, Valentin Serov, George Tooker, George Frederick Watts and Anders Zorn, and situates their work alongside more than 70 of Nerdrum's recent paintings. Alongside essays, poems and plays by the artist, Kitsch contains an extended dialogue on the topic between Nerdrum and Maria Kreyn.

Another good book about Nerdrum

The more I learn about Nerdrum, the better he gets.

First of all, this is a great looking book. Classic linen spine with leather title badge. Beautifully printed, lots of high quality full color reproductions of Nerdrum's work, new and old. Compared to Odd Nerdrum: Themes and Odd Nerdrum: Paintings, Sketches, and Drawings, this book does have some overlap with the images offered, but the majority of Nerdrum's work depicted here is not seen in the other books. Also, some of the work here seems less polished than work we've seen previously. Not inferior (not at all) but different. One gets the impression that work compiled in his previous books were selected very carefully to depict certain themes (obviously, the recent book being called 'Themes'). Some of the new work here would probably not fit in very well amongst some of the other paintings. For instance, one of Nerdrum's paintings here has an airplane in the sky. Really, it does. Nothing wrong with it, it just wouldn't fit with a lot of his desolate landscapes. Also depicted are several new still lifes (mostly fowl), new landscapes and of course many new figure paintings including self portraits. Many pictures of work by Nerdrum's students is here too. Some better than others, of course, but all very nice. An account of Nerdrum's school is also given which gives insight into Nerdrum's practices both as a painter and a teacher.

The 'Kitsch' text in this book is also very good. Though the book was not originally published in English, the language is very natural and easy to follow. (Unlike some translations which end up with awkward sentences and difficult rhythms.) Lots of insight about Nerdrum, and of course Kitsch, is offered here for the first time. If you're well educated with Nerdrum and have had discussions with any of his students, very little will actually be 'new.' But don't let that turn you off, as several interviews with Nerdrum, as well as poems and essays by Nerdrum himself, are also included for the first time. Again there is some overlap with his previous Kitsch book On Kitsch, but not so much that it becomes a problem.

A True Genius of Our Time

I have been a huge fan of Odd Nerdrum for many years...I consider him one of the few genius artists of this century....He is the Rembrandt of our time and I see no one even close to his talent...The Kitsch, More than Art book provides yet another view of this amazing artist and his thoughts about his own work and the work of others....I am very satisfied with my purchase....

The virtuoso painter uses Kitsch in your favor.
It's an interesting research showing that humans can understand contemporary concepts but still inside the same, always sharing your human nature, so, we like beauty, in the past, now or in the future. If dadaists killed art, at least some gave credit to that, it lives like ever and we can call it "kitsch" :-D

Life As I Have Known It Has Been Finger Lickin Good

Ok, so I will admit that I was hoping there would be the secret herbs and spices blend hidden somewhere in this book. Or even some kind of recipe. But alas, there wasn't. But it was still interesting and considering Mr. Sanders himself wrote it at 83 years of age and having only a 6th grade education, it was a pretty good book.

Sanders describes his entire life from when he was a boy and left home at the age of twelve, all the way up through the time that he is writing the book. He seems to drift through jobs, never staying any place long, and did a lot of work on the railroads and also selling insurance. It actually wasn't until he was in his sixties that he really buckled down and got the chicken thing going. Which is where the book turned the most interesting as he describes how he franchised and ran the business and developed his methods for cooking chicken. I never knew they used pressure cookers to cook the chicken until now and it really explains how they can cook it so fast.

Sanders is a pretty persnickety guy and he makes sure you know it in this book. Of course he's also somewhat of a braggart and makes sure you know just who he influenced or how much he gave to charity. But I guess at 83 if you want to brag its as good a time as any. And he did do a lot of good with his life. His biggest flaw, although not really seen in the book, is his cussing it would seem. He reiterates several times that he has a pretty foul mouth. And he also likes to preach quite a bit as he has a distinct relationship with God in his mind.

The book could have greatly used an editor to be more reader friendly (or a better one if it already had one). Sanders wrote just how he spoke more than likely and it is seen in the way his stories meander back and forth and how he gets off track. And if you read it out loud it would sound very much like regularly speech when you're telling a story to a friend. There were some details that were probably superfluous, but others that really gave an example of just how amazing his life was. I only wish he would have wrote more about his immediate family, they seemed to take a back burner to the stories strictly about him.

Still an interesting read of a unique fellow who had a way with chicken. I'll have to smile a little next time I step into a KFC and see his picture.

Fascinating Story

This is a great story Colonel Sanders writes about his very interesting life.

He was a sixth grade drop-out who later worked as a fireman, railroad worker, lawyer and delivered babies among other things. His business sense was remarkable, he worked his way through the depression and seemingly never stood still long.

I have so much admiration for this incredible man and the events and adventures that helped shape him.

This book is already in its 3rd edition. It has become one of the standard books of veterinary diagnostic cytology. The chapters on collecting material, on the cell types and malignancy criteria, on cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions, on lymph node, and on cerebrospinal fluid have many new pictures and have largely been rewritten. Several algorithms are provided which give helpful guidelines summarising the text. New chapters on selected infectious agents, round cell tumours, the gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas have been added. In contrast to earlier editions there is no longer a section with separate colour plates. However, no one will miss this as there are already so many pictures included in the separate chapters. The quality of these pictures has further improved and is generally excellent. Everybody in companion animal clinics who is interested in cytology should have this book on his or her bookshelf. Those who have an earlier version should consider upgrading to this new edition. European Journal of Companion Animal Practice, August 2008

Who should buy this book? Well certainly veterinary clinicians and students should have one as it provides an excellent source of reference, and I would suggest that every veterinary clinical pathology laboratory and veterinary university library should also ensure they have a copy. It is an excellent and very informative book. I would also recommend it as a valuable text for well-experienced veterinary clinical pathologists. A European woman who assumed the persona of a young male Tunisian student describes her remarkable journey into the Sahara in colorful and textured, albeit romanticized, vignettes. In 1897, Isabelle Eberhardt (The Oblivion Seekers, not reviewed), born and raised in Geneva, traveled with her mother to Tunis, where both converted to Islam. Eberhardt spent much of the rest of her life in Algeria; this work comes from notes she made during 1904 as they were later edited and published in France by Victor Barrucand. Despite this cleanup of the notes, some intriguing internal tensions remain: Eberhardt says her male persona (which Arabs respected, even when they saw through it) allows her to travel without attracting notice, but in a low moment she notes that she attracts disapproval. Near the Algeria-Morocco border, she muses with some pleasure that nobody knows precisely where the boundary is, yet soon (in one of the few hints at the region's volatility) she trades her Moroccan attire for Algerian to avoid annoying residents. When individuals and settings attract her eye she describes them vividly and concisely, whether she is passing a madman reciting verses from the Koran or taking tea with male students at a mosque. (Her garb ironically restricts her access to--and ability to learn about--women; interestingly, she seems not to mind.) Her observations on the play of light and color over the desert are made with an artist's eye, and her musings on travel and isolation reveal a pensive side. Yet far as she journeys, literally and metaphorically, she is still dogged by her prejudices: Jewish women cast ``provocative leers,'' and Jewish men possess ``insinuating and commercial abilities''; blacks can be ``repulsive'' and, when dancing, both ``childlike'' and ``barbarous.'' Eberhardt Shines Even Through a Sabotaged Translation

This volume of Isabelle Eberhardt's original Dans L'ombre Chaude de Islam "In the Warm Shadow of Islam" was penned in 1904. As a big Eberhardt fan I still enjoyed reading this slim 1993 edition although it's lamely billed "In the Shadow of Islam". Translated by Sharon Bangert, the omission of this single word from the title, "Warm", quite neatly reverses its meaning. Thus the translator or publishers (Peter Owen Publishers) chose to slyly sabotage Eberhardt's empathic sympathetic message about her chosen faith Sufism/Islam with a beckoning yet ominous tang. I suppose her original title, 'In the Warm Shadow of Islam', (emphasis mine) was too long and Islam-friendly for today's market?

Thus, the publisher's choice perpetrates the ever popular anti-Islamic bent. That said, it's the brilliance of Eberhart's work that manages to shine through even a biased translation.

About the Author

Mary Wrobel is a speech-language pathologist with more than twenty years of experience working with students who have autism and other disabilities. She wrote Taking Care of Myself to help teach students with disabilities the necessary information and skills they need to live safe, healthy lives as independently as they are physically and mentally capable of. Mary believes that by teaching these special young people self-care skills, we can instill personal safety and reduce confusion, fear, and the incidence of abuse.

Suitable for boys and girls on the autism spectrum

My son turned ten a few months ago so I decided Personal Hygiene and Puberty were topics we needed to delve into. I am very glad I purchased this book since it covered Deodorant, shaving, growth spurts and using a urinal.

My 10 year old is high functioning and his almost nine year old sibling is non-verbal and could benefit from some of the chapters as he gets older.

Throughout the book the stories are told in various points of views, either in the first, second or third person. Visual cues, communication aides and assistive technology is shown within the chapters. Mary also suggests starting self-care skills as young as three for brushing teeth and washing hands.

One thing to note is that the fonts change throughout the book. The pages that discuss developing a program and teaching various skills are presented in an easy to read manner, mostly for the adults teaching the curriculum. The remaining pages are activities and social stories that have larger fonts that are bolded. This seems to be easier to follow for my son as well.

All the diagrams inside are in black and white, plus the cover is not overstated and should not be embarassing to a pre-teen or teen.

Your student or child will not read about birth control, sexual intercourse, reproduction or sexually transmitted diseases. It is recommended to supplement this curriculum as the students become young adults. I was glad to know these issues would not be covered, yet my son ran into two words when looking up puberty in the dictionary - reproductive and sexually.

He was disappointed not to find a glossary, but liked learning about growing a mustache and how old he would be when he finally gets to high school.

None of the steps listed in the book are numbered, which I think is a good thing so the students do not get stuck on certain numbers instead of the actual steps.

The information presented is repetitious in nature, but that is needed when teaching children on the autism spectrum. There is plenty of room for note taking and creating your own social stories. This book is a useful tool for families, teachers and therapists to instill these vital lessons to children with autism.

Clean Up Time

This book makes me think of the John Lennon 1980 classic, "Clean Up Time."

This is an excellent book geared for the adolescent or tween on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. I like the way it tackles topics such as body development; hormonal changes; basic grooming and bathroom etiquette such as when boys use urinals.

I like the way vignettes were provided using different voices, e.g. first, second, third person. Prompts such as visual cues and other teaching tools are included. This author wisely suggests using a similar approach in teaching preschoolers good grooming habits and the rationale for same.

This book is for the adult instructor and young pupil alike. The drawings are discreet and appropriate and are not likely to make a young person feel embarrassed or threatened.

The tone of this book is plainly quite instructional, which is often a good approach with the a/A population. People with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) have been called "little professors" and often seek informational books and present discussions in an informtional format. This book does a good job of recognizing this trait and responding to it accordingly.

I highly recommend this book for parents, educators and young people. It is an important work and valuable resource tool.

I'm so glad I found this book!

I have a 10 yr. old daughter who is autistic. I have been worrying over the issues that are discussed in this book. It has proven to be such a huge resource. I tagged most of the book and I was able to borrow a boardmaker to start printing out all the ideas I got from this book. I now have a great shower sequence laminated and hanging in the bathroom for my daughter that she can use after I fade myself out from teaching her how to shower herself. Now I am starting to work on some of the more difficult stuff and there are plenty of social stories to copy and tweak to make it better suited to your child's needs. This book is chock full of great ideas and conversation starters for you and your growing daughter or son. It covers the stuff that you really would rather not think about but have no choice to, and it lays out things that you could say in simple terms to make it so that you wont have to fumble trying to find the right words and make it too difficult for your daughter or son to understand. I will be using this book pretty much from cover to cover! It also has a bit of advice telling you how you should delegate some of the tasks to the team at school. I have already discussed this with my daughters team and lucky for us they are all on board especially knowing that I am starting the teaching from home and they just need to follow up and not the other way around for once.
