Great in Theory, Not Even Remotely Practical ...

I am an actual professor. So, know that this review is from someone who tackles with issues of advising in a college setting. Now, here's where the text goes wildly wrong ... it is simply not practical. Whether one is teaching at a small liberal arts college or an overcrowded state university, the suggestions in this text (while well intended) are deeply impractical and painfully antiquated. Even at a small school, a professor's day is consumed with teaching, grading, standard office hours, service to the college (search committees, class observations, etc.), checking in on clubs, and scholarship. (Professors at state universities have even less time, often dealing with excruciating bureaucracy ... trust me, I've done it). The scenarios presented in this text are extraordinarily time-consuming. I would have students lined-up at my door if I adopted this approach. For instance, if a student is struggling in a class, the first and last stop is with that professor. That professor can suggest strategies for improvement, resources available to the student, or (in some cases) a remedial class (if a student is profoundly deficient). Typically, professors (especially at large universities) are not aware of all resources made available by all departments. Sure, students can seek solace in me about repeatedly failing calc II (I do feel for their situation), but the fact is the matter is that I'm not the person with whom they need to be speaking. Hence, some of these "I'm Okay, You're Okay" suggestions need to be ditched in the 1960s, to say the least. With a lobby of students waiting for the secretary to buzz them back to my office, it is not fair to them or to me to offer half-hour "feel good" sessions ... questions like "instead of focusing on this failure right now, where are things going right?" do not provide genuine help to anyone. "Disarming" and "discovering" as the text so succinct states (buzz words are fun, right?) equate to "frustrated students staring at my secretary" and "feeling accomplashed for two seconds, but still leaving with the same issue." It needs to be perfectly clear that professors do not have degrees in psychology and exist as ACADEMIC advisers merely to assist students in selecting the correct or best courses for their future career. It's really that simple. Likewise, we are not there to hold the hands of enraged students who are unable to meet the goals and expectations of the college. So, having a "pow-wow" about "Let's think about why this class may be required for your major" is not an option. I can just tell students, for example, "As a future high school teacher, you need this class in diversity since you will work with a wide group of students ... all of whom deserve your respect and compassion." So, the student does not needlessly have to brainstorm on the "why." I'll tell them why ... and then we will move on to the actual solutions.

I have taught at a very small, semi-exclusive college for twelve years now. The methods presented in this text will not be effective here (nor would they be supported by senior faculty and administration). And, if they do not work here (where my advisees are few and talented), I can promise you that they will absolutely not work at large, overtaxed universities (where students must often advise themselves since actual advisement is a signature on a sheet or a pin-code taped to a door ... and, yes, I have friends and colleagues in this position as professors).

Excellent Resource!

This authoritative text presents an extensive academic and theoretical foundation for academic advising best practices. While some of the information, though based on research, seems very obvious, the references are thorough and easy to locate. Also featured are various "scenarios." I found these to be the most helpful aspect of the text. They are depicted in charts and guide the advising process using clear and specific language and practice. There is also a chapter on "Socratic Advising" that provides relevant and straightforward models. I have not seen this model presented as clearly in any other text. All in all, this is an excellent resource and reference book for any advising office or for any new adviser. Since both community college and university authors are represented, this is a comprehensive text.

Geared toward academic advisors in higher learning institutions, the book describes a variety of advising approaches, proven practices, and strategies for helping students to achieve academic success. An article I once read in Liberty Journal ("Changing the Model") points out that in the future, top universities will be considered prestigious not for how selective their admissions process is, but how well they educate the students they accept and help them realize their potential. Academic advising will be an essential part of student mentoring that will help universities achieve that level of prestige.

Hot story....wish it was longer!

I'm honored to receive the ARS of this book by D.S and known her work for a first time. Now I'm a big fan of her work!

Alice (without the rabbit hole) is the only single at the company, now that all of her friends got married and become mommies. In her thirties, she dumped her four year relationship boyfriend because she couldn't handle their perfect, simple routine anymore. She needed adverture, she needed something to blast her desires, physically and mentally.

When Alice's friend arrange a night out at a brand new club with all mommies, she wanted to call out but she couldn't deny them for ever, nor to not have fun anymore. And after that night, she couldn't deny her desires either; and the Dark Alley will be the perfect path to complete these desires. No strings attached!

A very well-written short dark story, page turner I must say, made me not want to stop reading it. The story is interesting, like eyes wide closed movie, but with hotter and captivating scenes. I believe that the story isn't a love story but something else, something that intent to make us fell the lust and to be wanted and desirable and kinky. Be in the world of fantasies with a stranger in a Dark Alley!

I totally enjoy reading it, at the late hours of night, and it was so easy to be in her shoe because it was written every detail, is possible be, about the sex scenes and her feelings about them! So hot stuff! I absolutely recomment it!

Honest Review

This is the first of a series by D.S. Wrights. It's a rather short novella, but it holds a lot of promise of things to come.

Imagine a secret club where you can have safe anonymous sex with complete strangers in a dark alley. Would you join such a club? Well, Alice has just received a mysterious invitation to the Dark Alley club.

Alice is recently single, and a bit jaded about men. She has decided that she does not need a regular relationship, but she still has normal urges, and her BOB is not really doing the trick anymore.

Taking a chance she decides to see what this mysterious club is all about. She does not end up regretting it, but is she getting in too deep with something she may not fully understand? I guess we'll have to wait for the next installment to find out.

This is a quick easy read, but well worth it if you are looking for an erotic fantasy story, but not if you are looking for a romance. Although there is a tease that something more may happen later on.

I was intrigued by the premise and see a lot of potential in it. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story. I liked Alice and want her to be happy, and so far she seems quite happy.

I would encourage you to kick off your shoes and just lean back and enjoy the ride as you travel down the rabbit hole with Alice. Who knows what you may find along the way?

I need more and I need it now

I received an ARC for an honest review.
I can say that this is a story I have been waiting to come out, and I was not disappointed. [author:D S Wrights|8313425] has done it again. I have not read any of her books that I haven't loved.

So this story opens a woman up to the possibility of getting what she wants with out the worry of following the pack and becoming the good wife and mother that is expected. Alice is our main character and she is out with friends when she is given an invite to a club know as dark alley. There is no real clue who has invited her or what might happen oh but she and everyone that reads this knows what they hope it is. This is not a story of a young dumb girl that takes risks just for the heck of it. Alice is a smart women that even though there is risk in what she is doing she had the sense to take steps to protect herself.

Although this was a very quick read there was some of everything you could hope for in a novella. We went from dread to fun to holy cow to what the heck I need more and I sure as h*** need to know who the stranger in the alley is. So to say that I need the next installment like yesterday is an understatement. I hope the helps someone that is undecided on this book but just remember this is my opinion and I loved it.

About the Author
Lance Workman is principal lecturer and head of department of psychology at Bath Spa University College. He has written numerous articles on biological psychology and on animal behaviour, and recently wrote the evolutionary psychology section of the Encarta encyclopedia.

Will Reader is senior lecturer in psychology at Sheffield Hallam University, specialising in developmental psychology, cognitive psychology and human-computer interaction. He has published articles in all these areas.

Great Sourcebook on the Subject

This book is well-written and easy-to-read. I bought this book not for class but to teach myself about the subject. After reading this book, I feel that I have a good understanding of broad topics within the domain. Moreover, I am confident that I can use this book to guide me toward sources that delve deeper into the various broad topic areas.

About the Author
Teaches research methods, statistics, and organizational behavior in the masters and doctoral programs of public administration and business. Cooper's Ph.D. is from Kent State University. In addition to grants, articles, books, and monographs, he has received several teaching awards, most recently from the College of Architecture, Urban & Public Affairs. Dr. Cooper serves as the managing director of the Cooper Research Group, a consultancy specializing in customer satisfaction, loyalty, defection, and market segmentation research for the electronics and computer industries. Currently, he provides senior management of domestic and global firms with brand, segmentation, and service analysis. Prior to his academic career, Cooper was responsible for executive recruitment at a Fortune 500 and was an U.S. Air Force Captain during four years of active duty.

Professor of Management at Wittenberg University, is an educator and businesswoman. A winner of the prestigious Leavey Foundation Award in Free Enterprise Education, Schindler specializes in teaching marketing management, creative advertising, and supervising students on applied management projects. Serving as Director of Wittenberg's Center for Applied Management, she coordinates the Small Business Institute (SBI) program, winner of the 1996 National Showcase Award for innovation and excellence, as well as the Project Management Assistance program, in which she has guided more than 300 students doing experiential research and strategic projects for businesses, not-for-profits, and government agencies. A management and marketing consultant, Schindler also holds operating responsibilities in her family's property management business.

The text is awesome, great content and very well put together. If my college class didn't require it, I would have never purchased it. The price tag is $266 for paperback...wow! How do they expect college students to be able to afford this?

"When we think of home canning, our mind's eye is quick to envision neat rows of jars lining pantry shelves, safely filled with food just waiting to be opened so we can prepare a variety of tasty meals for our dear families," Georgia Varozza writes in her book, "The Amish Canning Cookbook."

This spiral-bound paperback book has two hundred and nineteen pages targeted to those cooks, chefs, and homemakers who want to learn plain and simple canning at its homemade best. For over twenty years, Varozza has been canning and is certified, producing three hundred jars the book's production year alone.

After an introduction about the author's personal canning journey, there are thirteen chapters dedicated to its history, getting started, the two types of canning, making butters, jams and jellies, using pickles, tomatoes, fruits, pie fillings, vegetables, meat, poultry, and fish along with soups and stews and tips and encouragement, ending with an extensive topical index. Almost all pages include a blank side bar for the reader's notes.

The benefits of canning include saving money, aiding meal planning, and stocking shelves with no preservatives, additives or BPA while being easier on the environment. Not only do canned foods taste better and are at the cupboard's door later, they are perfect for unexpected guests and gifts, giving personal satisfaction to the maker.

Explaining both water-bath and pressure canning, Varozza has step-by-step guides mentioning costs, cooking, filling, processing, and cleaning up along with how to use Tattler lids correctly.

The bulk of the book is recipes, usually with bullet point instructions, lists of ingredients and processing times. Recipes give options with either powdered or liquid pectin, fresh-pack or quick pickling, hot or cold packing and Clear-Jel or cornstarch. The chapter on Soups, Stews and Other Good Things has a plethora of simple to complex menu ideas.

With safety first, the author is explicit on what to do and what not to do, especially mentioning foods that should not be canned. She takes the simple but concise approach to doing canning right the first time but offers advice when erred.

With all the processed, preservative-saturated food in the supermarket at perpetually increasing costs, this book is one way to make and enjoy the food God has blessed us with now and in months to come.

Very informative.

I wanted to learn how to can so decided to get the Amish Canning Cookbook. The cookbook is well written and has very good explanations as to why things should be done a certain way. The recipes are wonderful and useful. I made jams, jelly, and canned everything from carrots to soups and all turned out excellent. There are no pictures really that you can look at but I wanted a cookbook not a picture book! I would recommend this to anyone thinking about doing their own canning.

Being an experienced canner I felt it was a little too "beginner" for me. Half of the book is explanation. But it has some good recipes and would be a good "starter" book for someone.

With Mulan, its latest animated feature, Disney deviates ever so cautiously from its rigid formula for other recent animated releases. Based on a Chinese legend of a girl who disguises herself as a soldier to take her father's place in the army, Mulan plays down the love interest prominent in newer Disney animated features and plays up the heroine's brains, courage, and skill. The coffee-table commemoration of the film, however, adheres to its predecessors' format. It details the movie's history and production and presents more than 350 beautifully produced illustrations that include early conceptual drawings and character designs, background paintings (many evocative of classic Chinese watercolors), and production stills. The text discusses the animators' visit to China to research the story's setting and the film's overall visual design, which stresses elements and simplifications that are common to both traditional Chinese art and effective animation. Intelligently written at last!

I have noticed the number of reviewers for 'Art of Mulan'who criticized it for not going into the animation process deeply enough. I am of the opinion that such elementary explanation of animation is not the function of these books. There are no shortage of instructional books if you want to learn about animation. Myself, I soaked up the much more detailed analysis of the Making of Mulan. I was most intrigued by the issues faced in making a western film but still faithful to the values and depiction of Chinese culture. Plus, this book contains the sharpest words yet put forward by a Disney representative in defense of Disney's methods of adaptation, and comments on critics who deride Disney as a whole for 'ruining' classic legends, whereas adaptation of a legend to a contemporary audience has been happening for centuries and is nothing new. Great book. Great art.
...and what the hell was the 'disgusting' nude art referred to by one reviewer! There was nothing indecent in the art that I could recall.

An inspirational look at creating animation

[[VIDEOID:31977351]]What a wonderful art book this is, on Disney's Mulan.

I really couldn't put it down after reading it. It tells a very clear and interesting story on how the movie was created. Disney put huge emphasis on stories. The different story artists would discuss at lengths in this book on the considerations they made when trying to adapt Chinese history into a Western film. There were ideas to make Mulan a romantic comedy, which were luckily shot down, in an attempt to keep the film authentic.

The research process is most interesting and takes a look at the artists as they travel tthroughout China, visiting places like the Great Wall, Forbidden City and other ancient cities. It's a great learning process for them, when they were there, and for the readers, as we read from their experiences now.

All the concept art, storyboards and film stills presented are always related back to the story. The artists will always be there to explain how their design supports the story. So it's a great insight into how to do production design.

While the movie is animated, the book doesn't talk about animation technically.

This art book is the learning process of creating an animated film. It's fun, fresh and delightful to read. It should appeal greatly to animators, production designers and artists.

This nexus of ideas constituted the ontology and epistemology about psychiatric conditions in earlier historical epochs. It shaped their form, content and meaning and it provided a basis for approaches to healing. Normal and not so normal conceptions about behavior and well being are discussed based on indigenous systems of meaning. The manner in which psychiatric conditions were and still are formulated in the compilations of Caraka, Susruta, Vagbhata, and Bela are reviewed and compared along with religious and spiritual viewpoints. Discussion of approach to conditions of psychiatric interest rooted in traditional Indian values provides a basis for critique and plea for broadening the scope and depth of the already vibrant and scientifically compelling psychiatry of contemporary India. The book aims to make modern psychiatry more responsive to India s understanding of the human condition.
