Zen Spaces & Neon Places: Reflections on Japanese Architecture and Urbanism, by Vinayak Bharne

Moving across Japanese history in time and space--from its ancient Shinto beginnings to its largest recorded earthquake, and from the spiritual calm of Ise and Ryoanji to the psychedelic consumerism of Shinjuku and Ginza--Zen Spaces in Neon Places is the first book to catch all of the dimensions and sensations of the Japanese built environment: its architecture and urbanism; its historic buildings and cities; its digital streetscapes and mega-structures; its hyper-speed trains and theme parks; and its concurrent cultures of kinky love hotels and contemplative tea ceremonies. Zen Spaces also looks back at the vital defining moments in the culture's recent history--the reforestation policy of the Tokugawa, the entry of European influences, the insinuation of Western democracy, the expansion and collapse of the economic bubble--and the transformative effects they have had on the Japanese built world.

Combining two decades of author Vinayak Bharne's scholarship, fieldwork, and personal experience, this landmark volume evokes the bewildering and contradictory built world of Japan, and weaves together its delicate and raw intellectual textures into a unique reading experience.

Review
"This book is an unabashedly ambitious attempt to critically reinterpret the multi-faceted essence of Japan and its myriad apparently-conflicting cultural reference-points, applying the kaleidoscopic twin lenses of architectural theory and urban practicalities." --Ken Rodgers, Managing Editor, Kyoto Journal.

"This book will fascinate anyone puzzled by the perceived contrasts between Japan s fanatically ordered calm of temple gardens and the eclectic exuberance of building and urban design since the Second World War. It offers a perceptive yet provocative tour around the history and development of Japan s architecture 'as a cultural continuum between the native and the foreign, between tradition and mutation,' tracing developments from Nara to Tokyo, with plentiful asides along the way. If you have ever wondered what the splendor of Todai-ji Temple and the puzzle of Ryoan-ji Temple have to do with Shinjuku Railway Station, then this is the book for you! --Michael Greenhalgh, Professor Emeritus of Art History, Australian National University

"Bharne is a highly perceptive flâneur of the Japanese city. On this elegantly written and thought-provoking stroll - from the early beginnings of Japanese architecture in Ise to the neon-lit street canyons of post-industrial Tokyo - he opens up surprising and fresh perspectives on urban Japan and challenges views that have long been taken for granted." --Christian Dimmer, Ph.D., Assistant Professor Urban Design & Urban Studies, University of Tokyo.

Devil's in the details ... Japan's time, space and time-space
By Lauren Deutsch
Whether you're an experienced Japanophile or are just wondering why do you find the aesthetic so intriguing, Professor (USC) Bharne's book will help you discover the essence of tradition-rooted life in Japan. From roofs to gardens, tea ceremony to gridlock traffic, this is a very personal journey with a guide who has a keen eye for details honed through time, space and time-space. (Yes, he should have directed his publisher away from using an image of Shinto torii gates when the title has to do with Zen Buddhism. What's an author to do ...?)

prose and visuals match the book's lush topic
By Brettany Shannon
Bharne's thoughtful and _original_ insights are matched only by his eloquent, gracious prose. And that praise covers just the words. Visually, the publication wows; all-color photographs are artfully placed on glossy paper stock. If you're remotely interested in the topic of Japan's architecture and architectural history, or even just Japanese culture, you will love this book.

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Data Manipulation in SQL (3rd Edition), by John L. Viescas, Michael J. Hernandez

The #1 Easy, Common-Sense Guide to SQL Queries—Updated for Today’s Databases, Standards, and Challenges

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals ® has earned worldwide praise as the clearest, simplest tutorial on writing effective SQL queries. The authors have updated this hands-on classic to reflect new SQL standards and database applications and teach valuable new techniques.

Step by step, John L. Viescas and Michael J. Hernandez guide you through creating reliable queries for virtually any modern SQL-based database. They demystify all aspects of SQL query writing, from simple data selection and filtering to joining multiple tables and modifying sets of data.

Three brand-new chapters teach you how to solve a wide range of challenging SQL problems. You’ll learn how to write queries that apply multiple complex conditions on one table, perform sophisticated logical evaluations, and think “outside the box” using unlinked tables.

Coverage includes

-- Getting started: understanding what relational databases are, and ensuring that your database structures are sound

-- SQL basics: using SELECT statements, creating expressions, sorting information with ORDER BY, and filtering data using WHERE

-- Summarizing and grouping data with GROUP BY and HAVING clauses

-- Drawing data from multiple tables: using INNER JOIN, OUTER JOIN, and UNION operators, and working with subqueries

-- Modifying data sets with UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements Advanced queries: complex NOT and AND, conditions, if-then-else using CASE, unlinked tables, driver tables, and more

Practice all you want with downloadable sample databases for today’s versions of Microsoft Office Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and the open source MySQL database. Whether you’re a DBA, developer, user, or student, there’s no better way to master SQL.

Review

The good books show you how to do something. The great books enable you to think clearly about how you can do it. This book is the latter. To really maximize the potential of your database, thinking about data as a set is required and the authors’ accessible writing really brings out the practical applications of SQL and the set-based thinking behind it.

-- Ben Clothier, Lead Developer at IT Impact, Inc., co-author of Professional Access 2013 Programming, and Microsoft Access MVP

Unless you are working at a very advanced level, this is the only SQL book you will ever need. The authors have taken the mystery out of complex queries and explained principles and techniques with such clarity that a “Mere Mortal” will indeed be empowered to perform the superhuman. Do not walk past this book!

--Graham Mandeno, Database Consultant

It’s beyond brilliant! I have been working with SQL for a really long time and the techniques presented in this book exposed some of the bad habits I picked up over the years in my learning process. I wish I had learned these techniques a long time ago and saved myself all the headaches of learning SQL the hard way. Who said you can’t teach old dogs new tricks?

--Leo (theDBguy), Utter Access Moderator and Microsoft Access MVP

I learned SQL primarily from the first and second editions of this book, and I am pleased to see a third edition of this book so that others can continue to benefit from its organized presentation of the language. Starting from how to design your tables so that SQL can be effective (a common problem for database beginners), and then continuing through the various aspects of SQL construction and capabilities, the reader can become a moderate expert upon completing the book and its samples. Learning how to convert a question in English into a meaningful SQL statement will greatly facilitate your mastery of the language. Numerous examples from real life will help you visualize how to use SQL to answer the questions about the data in your database. Just one of the “watch out for this trap” items will save you more than the cost of the book when you avoid that problem when writing your queries. I highly recommend this book if you want to tap the full potential of your database.

--Kenneth D. Snell, Ph.D., Database Designer/Programmer

I don’t think they do this in public schools any more, and it is a shame, but do you remember in the seventh and eighth grades when you learned to diagram a sentence? Those of you who do may no longer remember how you did it, but all of you do write better sentences because of it. John Viescas and Mike Hernandez must have remembered because they take everyday English queries and literally translate them into SQL. This is an important book for all database designers. It takes the complexity of mathematical Set Theory and of First Order Predicate Logic, as outlined in E. F. Codd’s original treatise on relational database design, and makes it easy for anyone to understand. If you want an elementary- through intermediate-level course on SQL, this is the one book that is a requirement, no matter how many others you buy.

--Arvin Meyer, MCP, MVP

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals, Third Edition, provides a step-by-step, easy-to-read introduction to writing SQL queries. It includes hundreds of examples with detailed explanations. This book provides the tools you need to understand, modify, and create SQL queries.

--Keith W. Hare, Convenor, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 WG3International SQL Standards Committee

Even in this day of wizards and code generators, successful database developers still require a sound knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL, the standard language for communicating with most database systems). In this book, John and Mike do a marvelous job of making what’s usually a dry and difficult subject come alive, presenting the material with humor in a logical manner, with plenty of relevant examples. I would say that this book should feature prominently in the collection on the bookshelf of all serious developers, except that I’m sure it’ll get so much use that it won’t spend much time on the shelf!

--Doug Steele, Microsoft Access Developer and author

I highly recommend SQL Queries for Mere Mortals to anyone working with data. John makes it easy to learn one of the most critical aspects of working with data: creating queries. Queries are the primary tool for selecting, sorting, and reporting data. They can compensate for table structure, new reporting requirements, and incorporate new data sources. SQL Queries for Mere Mortals uses clear, easy to understand discussions and examples to take readers through the basics and into complex problems. From novice to expert, you will find this book to be an invaluable reference as you can apply the concepts to a myriad of scenarios, regardless of the program.

--Teresa Hennig, Microsoft MVP-Access, and lead author of several Access books, including Professional Access 2013 Programming (Wrox)

This Book Is Nothing Short Of Fantastic!
By Larry
It's easy to find a good book that will provide definitions and examples for inner joins vs. outer joins, subqueries, etc. You can read them and understand the definitions and/or examples, however, when you come across a 10 - 20 line query in your job or have to create your own complicated query from scratch you realize just how tenuous your gut-level understanding of this mysterious thing called SQL really is.
This book will give you the gut-level understanding you so desperately crave - and need if you are working with databases.
The authors provide clear explanations of the various SQL constructs for both the SQL Standard and real world levels (which are oftentimes two different things). They further deconstruct real-world issues by also describing the anomalies between some of the more popular databases.
But you can get all this from just about any other good SQL book. Where this one really shines is the way it leads you from simple to more and more complex queries via well-crafted and well-explained examples. They progress from simple queries to queries containing expressions to filtering data with a 'where' clause to inner joins to outer joins to unions to subqueries to aggregate functions to grouping data and then filtering that data by 'having' clauses. They end up by covering updating, inserting, and deleting data.
They give tons of examples that illustrate how to solve common problems and the more trickier "gotchas" that you're likely to run into. These examples occur both within the meat of the chapter, i.e. where they are explaining terms and concepts, and at the end of the chapter where they describe how and why they put the queries together the way they did.
The queries are all against 5 databases containing from 6 to 13 tables each. The databases, tables, and all of the queries are contained on a CD ROM that accompanies the book.
Each chapter ends with 3 or 4 problems for *each* of the 5 databases. If you really want to learn how to write complex queries then do as many of the problems as you can. The solutions are on the CD so if you get stuck you can see how the authors solved the problem. The more you do, the more you will find that you can craft fairly complex SQL queries "from the hip". As one who did all of the sample problems I can assure you that that statement is no lie.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

By Jerry Vale "Sam"
This is a great book especially for a beginner starting to do SQL queries. The examples in the book are clear and easy to follow and it's nice there's a CD which has good examples also. The book also describes inner and outer joins and grouping data. This book has helped me in my work.

Great book for novices and intermediates
By L. Grundy
Before this book I thought that only the O'Reilly books had the substance and depth I needed, but this book really gets in to the level of explanation I like. I am returning to a more technical role after being less involved in hands-on for a bit and this book has ramped me back up.

Interesting view into a prominent economist's career
By M. Zobian
For anyone who'd like to know what the professional life of an acclaimed economist is like, this is a great book. But two things will surprise you. First, Modigliani had an extremely poor grasp of the importance of free markets. Much of his railings against Italy's over-regulated economy were, you quickly gleam from the book, based on his opinion that it wasn't being over-regulated properly. (!!!) Secondly, he apparently never bothered to have someone edit the book. Typos, grammer mistakes and missing graphs abound, to the point where you wonder how in the world the book got published.
I wouldn't recommend the book unless you are specifically looking for works on Modigliani's economics, or are generally curious about the career of a Nobel economist.

To see an accurately edited version of his IS-LM presentation
By Leif Wennerberg
An original version of the book's discussion of the IS-LM model is available online, without the disappointing, repeated errors that scar the book's version:

Modigliani, Franco, "THE KEYNESIAN GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MODIGLIANI", The American Economist 47, no. 1 (Spring 2003), 3–24.

I have extracted it from an online pdf of "THE COLLECTED PAPERS OF FRANCO MODIGLIANI VOLUME 6" and posted it on www.dropbox.com/...:

SCIENTIFIC BIOGRAPHY OF A GREAT ECONOMIST
By Denis Benchimol Minev
Franco Modigliani is definitely among the handful of top economists of the 20th century. This book is his autobiography in which he not only describes the events that shaped his very interesting life, but also describes in detail the fundametals of the theories that eventually led him to receive the Nobel prize.

He is well known for two ideas, the lifetime cycle of savings and the Modigliani-Miller finance theorem. Both are described in depth in the book in a simple enough way that someone with only a basic knowledge of economics will be able to understand. He also makes good arguments for the Keynesian economics camp, versus the classical economics of the Chicago school. Either of his two ideas would likely be enough for the Nobel.

His is a inspiring tale of an escapee from fascist Italy who accomplishes much in his new land, the US. Modigliani is torn between his homeland, Italy, and his adopted land, the US. He has maintained close ties with Italy, devoting much of the book to describe his involvement in Italian economics and a bit of politics. He also focuses on his love for America and the lasting impressions of his welcome in the country had in his life, research, and philosophy.

To any economist, Modigliani should be a well known household name; his autobiography is a precious document that ought to remind economists what economics is all about, namely making the world a better place.

The Works of Jonathan Edwards, Vol. 1 (With a Memoir , by Sereno E. Dwight), by Jonathan Edwards

This book begins the publication of Jonathan Edwards' personal theological notebooks, called collectively the "Miscellanies." The entries in Volume 13 span the early years of Edwards' ministry (1722-31) and range widely in subject matter. They record Edwards' initial thoughts on some of his most characteristic ideas, for example, original sin, free will, the Trinity, and God's end in creation. Many entries, however, relate to doctrinal and polemical subjects not included in the corpus of Edwards' published writings. The volume also contains Edwards' alphabetical index to the entire "Miscellanies"; this "Table" is a theological document in its own right and reveals the interrelationship among the various components of Edwards' theological system.

Nothing More Valuable to a Christian
By John Jeffery Fanella (JJF1517@aol.com)
This is perhaps the most valuable set of books you will ever buy as a Christian. Jonathan Edwards' breathtaking analysis of the things of God will sweep you off of your feet. I have come to this set of books time and time again for insight, profound reflection, and personal renewal. I would challenge you to read the works of Jonathan Edwards, especially if you are an Arminian. Edwards presents the absolute sovereignty of God with impeccable clarity, logic and argument. If read in faith, you will never be the same. Be sure to get this Banner of Truth set, as the Yale set is far too costly.

in defense of reading glasses
By D. T. Kleven
First of all, 10 stars for the actual material by Edwards. This review is on the format of the Banner of Truth Works (Vol. 2 found here, and both volumes together found here

I must admit, I was intimidated by the Banner of Truth formatting. They simply reprinted a two volume set from 1834, and it is in size 9 (or smaller?) font, double columns per page, nearly 1,000 pages per volume. In a panel discussion at the Desiring God Conference in 2003 devoted entirely to Jonathan Edwards, all of the participants, including Iain Murray himself, made reference to the small print, and joked that it should come with a magnifying glass included.

I hesitated. My first real reading of Edwards was The End for Which God Created the World, and I had John Piper to hold my hand in reading it. I was so swept along by it that I decided to read "True Virtue" next, but I didn't have a separate copy. Do I buy it in paperback, or read it in my giant, scary, tiny print Banner of Truth edition? I decided I would try it, and if it was absolutely miserable, at least I tried. Since then, I've read "Justification by Faith Alone" in the BoT, and am currently reading BoT's separate edition of A History of the Work of Redemption - not in the collected works.

All of that is to say that I've evaluated the reading experience enough to comment on this particular volume: and I highly recommend it.

Yes, the print is small. I find myself leaning into the page to bring the small print closer to my eyes. This is actually a benefit. Reading Edwards takes effort, and I find that even the physical act of "leaning in" helps my mind to do the same.

One of the huge benefits of the small print is how much can fit on a single page. The ratio is 1:5, so if you have the book open before you, you are looking at 10 pages of a normally printed book. This is so helpful when reading Edwards! Mortimer Adler in How to Read a Book explains that the 1st reading (of 3) is the "structural" or "analytic" reading. One of the rules in this type of reading is to "set forth the major parts of the book, and show how these are organized into a whole, by being ordered to one another and to the unity of the whole." (p. 163) Edwards writing is oftentimes very structured, and outlined in the text. I,II,III, a,b,c, 1,2,3, etc. I've found that the best way to read him is first to go through and write in the margins all of his "outline markers" so that I can see the structure ahead of time. This makes it so much easier to grasp his flow of thought, and to understand his reasoning. Having the equivalent of 10 pages in front of you at a time allows you to see the big picture in his structure in a way that is almost impossible in a normal book. Flipping through ten pages trying to see the structure of the whole, versus having it all in front of you at once? There is no comparison.

I own The Religious Affections and The Freedom of the Will as separate publications. I will most likely read them in this Banner of Truth format, specifically to better understand the overall structure and flow of his thought.

There are some footnotes included throughout. Some of them are Edwards own notes - read those. Others are the "valuable notes of Dr. Williams." They are actually pretty distracting and not very valuable. Feel free to skip them.

Volume 1 includes just about all of his major works:

Memoirs (by Sereno Dwight)
Freedom of the Will
The End for Which God Created the World
True Virtue
Original Sin
Religious Affections
Narrative of Surprising Conversions
Thoughts on the Revival
Qualifications for Communion
Reply to Solomon Williams
A History of the Work of Redemption
Justification by Faith Alone
The Excellency of Jesus Christ

This is the best $20 you will spend in your life! Don't be afraid of the small print :-)

A man of giant faith
By Manja Arnold
These are the works of a man with a deep conviction who wrestled with the big and complicated truths of God. Jonathan Edwards has challenged and grown my view of true religion. The book is not easy to read and the small print can be daunting, but the thoughts and ideas are rich and full of the glory of God.

My Faraway One: Selected Letters of Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz: Volume One, 1915-1933 (Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library

There are few couples in the history of 20th-century American art and culture more prominent than Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986) and Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946). Between 1915, when they first began to write to each other, and 1946, when Stieglitz died, O'Keeffe and Stieglitz exchanged over 5,000 letters (more than 25,000 pages) that describe their daily lives in profoundly rich detail. This long-awaited volume features some 650 letters, carefully selected and annotated by leading photography scholar Sarah Greenough.

In O'Keeffe's sparse and vibrant style and Stieglitz's fervent and lyrical manner, the letters describe how they met and fell in love in the 1910s; how they carved out a life together in the 1920s; how their relationship nearly collapsed during the early years of the Depression; and how it was reconstructed in the late 1930s and early 1940s. At the same time, the correspondence reveals the creative evolution of their art and ideas; their friendships with many of the most influential figures in early American modernism (Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, and Paul Strand, to name a few); and their relationships and conversations with an exceptionally wide range of key figures in American and European art and culture (including Duncan Phillips, Diego Rivera, D. H. Lawrence, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Marcel Duchamp). Furthermore, their often poignant prose reveals insights into the impact of larger cultural forces—World Wars I and II; the booming economy of the 1920s; and the Depression of the 1930s—on two articulate, creative individuals.

Two great artists, two great writers, one great love - and one fantastic book!
By Hervé Forniéri
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you

When Bob Dylan wrote these lines in his song "Tangled Up In Blue," he was probably referring to the love poetry of Dante or Petrarch, but he could just as easily have been describing the magic swirling rush of white-hot prose in "My Faraway One: Selected Letters of Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz," one of the most beautiful and surprising books I have ever read - and definitely one of the sexiest: D.H. Lawrence and Henry Miller - eat your hearts out!

When I first heard about this book my hopes were high - but I was also more than a little dubious: Hadn't these two people already expressed themselves best through their art - O'Keeffe in her paintings, Stieglitz in his photographs? Well, yes - they both said a great deal in their art, but they clearly had much, much more to say about the world, about themselves, and about each other, and the proof is in this book. The biggest surprise of all is what wonderful writers they both were.

Stieglitz certainly knew how to express himself in bold polemics and manifestos ("I was born in Hoboken. I am an American. Photography is my passion. The search for truth my obsession.") but the word "subtlety" had no place in his public vocabulary, and he would seem to be ridiculously ill-suited to writing a tender love letter. This book reveals, however, that the exact opposite is true. In these letters he drops his public mask, and the incredibly articulate Stieglitz can be as fragile and delicate as the flowers O'Keeffe painted, frequently expressing himself with an almost Chekhovian sensitivity to mood and detail, but much of the time his words are an overwhelming torrent of vivid, unfiltered passion - Jack Kerouac would be proud! - and if words were indeed burning coal, this book would spontaneously combust.

In most of the famous photographs Stieglitz took of her, Georgia O'Keeffe seems cool, aloof and inscrutable. It thus comes as an enormous shock that in her early letters to Stieglitz she could be as flirtatious as a smitten schoolgirl. Georgia's expressions of love are just as intense as Alfred's, although her style is "sparse and vibrant" (in the words of the book's editor) as opposed to the "fervent and lyrical" prose of Stieglitz. It is easy to see why she eventually felt stifled by the controlling and self-absorbed Stieglitz, who in turn was doomed to be driven nuts by the distant and independent O'Keeffe. Theirs was the kind of delirious love affair we all dream about having, but most of us are unable to attain such heavenly highs, and thankfully we are rarely forced to endure such hellish lows. It is a lot safer to experience this kind of mad love vicariously - between the covers of a book like this.

And Alfred finally does indeed go mad on p. 495. Already on the verge of a nervous breakdown, he mistakenly thinks that Georgia has left him for good and panics, becoming at once a hysterical teenager who's just been dumped by his girlfriend, and a suicidal middle-aged man who is certain that he has just lost the love of his life. I'm surprised that he didn't kill himself before he mailed the letter... Okay, okay - Stieglitz was an awful drama queen, but he did feel things intensely - and he just happened to be the Father of Modern Photography, so, like Georgia, we must be prepared to cut him a little slack...

These letters are not all soap opera and Sturm und Drang, however - lots of them are just plain interesting. On p. 125, for example, Stieglitz goes to a party in Manhattan in 1917 and bumps into an up-and-coming French artist who offers to show him an amazing work in progress: "Having his studio a flight up, he took me up to see his work -- He is doing a marvelous thing on huge glass -- about eight feet by twelve -- Has been over a year on it -- It's all worked out with fine wire & lead -- a little color -- very perfect workmanship..." And thus the perceptive and appreciative Stieglitz gets a sneak peak at Marcel Duchamp's legendary "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)."

We're all familiar with O'Keeffe's iconic paintings, but what did she think about them when they were works in progress? "I hate the back of my Ranchos church -- Tomorrow I must get out at it again -- It is heavy -- I want it to be light and lovely and singing..." (July 9, 1930) "Strand didn't like the 'paint quality' in one of my best paintings -- Made me want to knock his hat off or do something to him to muss him up -- The painting certainly has no resemblance to a photograph..." (July 10, 1931) "The horse's head with a pink rose over its eye makes me laugh every time I look at it..." (November 10, 1931). Such fascinating insights are found on virtually every page of this book.

But for me, the two most amazing letters in this book demonstrate the almost supernatural synchronicity between these two lovers and artists. The letters were written by O'Keeffe and Stieglitz on the same day, September 25, 1923, while she was visiting York Beach, Maine, and he was staying at their summer home at Lake George, New York, two hundred miles away. Unbeknownst to the other, of course, each had been utterly entranced by the same moonlit night - but O'Keeffe saw a colorful painting, and Stieglitz saw a black-and-white photograph.

O'Keeffe: "Last evening -- walking on the beach at sunset I saw a pink moon -- nearly full -- grow out of the gray over the green sea -- till it made a pink streak on the water -- very faint -- that told you where the ocean began and the soft gray blur of space was ended -- And the moon grew hotter and hotter -- and the path on the water brighter and brighter till it burned so that I didn't want to look anymore..."

Stieglitz: "It was a marvelous night. A white moonlight night. I never saw any night quite like it -- none more beautiful -- For a long while before going to bed I stood at your window looking lakeward -- looking at the white silences -- the white night so silent. -- Nothing stirred. Even the moon full & round seemed not to wish to disturb the stillness -- it seemed to be moving slowly upwards as if on tiptoes moving through a house of stillness at night when all inmates were fast asleep. -- All was so still -- & the whiteness so lovely -- The hills were not hills -- they were something bathed in an untouchable spirit of light -- the line produced where this spirit met the sky spirit was of rarest subtle beauty -- Really I never saw anything quite so beautiful -- I looked & looked & knew I was awake..."

Or, as their fellow genius and American original, Bob Dylan, might have explained their permanent predicament (again from "Tangled Up In Blue"):

We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view

Finally, it must be noted that if the O'Keeffe-Stieglitz correspondence had been published in its entirety, this book would have been the size of a microwave oven. Those two exchanged 25,000 handwritten pages, and never crossed out a word - thus the key to the book's title is the deceptively simple word, "selected." Just wading through all of these letters would have been a monumental task for anyone, but the editor, Sarah Greenough, has also apparently consulted every letter they ever wrote... to ANYONE! Not to mention every letter they ever RECEIVED! Yet the superhuman task the editor set for herself has resulted in a highly enjoyable book of manageable size. Her annotations are invaluable: always informative, but never intrusive, they save the reader from drowning in a flood of words. She even had the splendid idea of providing an index of first names - a handy tool, since Stieglitz and O'Keeffe had a whole lot of friends to keep track of. Greenough is particularly informative about a young woman named Dorothy Norman, the scheming groupie who latched on to Alfred in 1927, and whose increasingly domineering presence in his life helped to poison Stieglitz's friendship with his brilliant protégé, Paul Strand, and damaged his relationship with Georgia forever.

According to the acknowledgments, O'Keeffe herself asked Sarah Greenough to edit these letters, and - not surprisingly - Georgia knew exactly what she was doing: Somehow she was able to pick out the young scholar who has become America's preeminent photo historian (just as a great baseball scout can spot the potential in a young Hank Aaron or Sandy Koufax) and Greenough's commentaries come as a welcome interlude before the fireworks between Alfred and Georgia start up again.

I'm a big fan of photo books, and I own quite a few of the books she has edited, but until this title came along, my favorite Greenough book - my desert-island photo book, in fact - was "Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans (Expanded Edition)," a mind-bogglingly complete explication of the works of an artist very different from Stieglitz and O'Keeffe - but now I'll have to bring "My Faraway One" to that desert island. With Georgia and Alfred there to keep me company, things might get a little agitated at times, but I will certainly never be bored.

A personal look at an amazing artistic relationship
By M J Miller
In MY FARAWAY ONE, Sarah Greenough provides an up-close-and-personal look at one of the most important artistic partnerships ever.

By turns supportive, turbulent, cutting, caring, but always mutually-creative, Stieglitz and O'Keeffe shared 25,000 pages of correspondence from 1915 through 1946, when Stieglitz died. They would frequently write several letters per day to each other, some up to 20-30 pages long (they both had flowing handwriting and used lots of space!). These letters were sealed, by request of O'Keeffe (with a few exceptions) until 20 years after her death. She personally asked Ms. Greenough to edit and compile them and the result is over 800 pages (Volume 1, with one more to come), which illuminates their incredible partnership.

O'Keeffe first visited Stieglitz's avant-garde 291 gallery as an art student in NYC. He was already a famous photographer and art impresario. She was intimidated by his fame and his strong personality but attracted by them as well, knowing that his opinions were of utmost importance. A friend showed Stieglitz some of her drawings and he was so enthralled that it began a relationship that would last until he died, making her into one of the most famous American artists along the way. He was also attracted to her independent personality and disarming candor, rare in a young woman of that time. She was 23 years younger than Stieglitz and her attention and obvious charms led their letters to become increasingly intimate. She, at his insistence moved to NY, he left his wife and daughter to move in with her. They eventually married, after living together for six years out of wedlock while he was still married to his first wife.

Through all their correspondence their artistic bond is clear and even paramount to their actual relationship. It is amazing to read in their own words, how they are inevitably drawn together, framed against the times through two world wars and changing artistic tastes. This is essential reading for anyone with an interest in American art history, or for anyone who has ever been in love. Looking forward to Volume 2.

superb book
By shoshanna preiss
Having read several biographies about Georgia O'keeffe this book outshone every other one. Here, through the letters, one gets the real sense of who these two people, O'keeffe and Steiglitz.
I came to know Georgia the young girl, the immature one who on the one hand did silly things, on the other hand is aware of and describes the beauty around her in such detail, that I felt I was right there with her.
I came to know Steiglitz the lover, the romantic, the more mature person, learned of his environment and of what mattered to him.
As the corrospondance continued I was able to slowly witness the maturing Georgia who became a woman, still fragile but knowing herself and her needs.
No Biography can compare to the riches of these letters. The author chose well, knew how to weave the important letters that brought to the reader a well formed tapestry of the lives of these two artists.
I am waiting for the second volume.

Might be better with separate outlines on each topic
By calvinnme
I used this outline for review and with some problems I was having in a course on computational robotics I was taking a couple of years ago and I found this book to be an excellent review that answered all of my questions. However, my stepson used it in his statics and dynamics classes to help with the material when it was being presented to him for the first time, and he said he felt it brushed over some of the material in both classes. Even though this is a hefty outline, perhaps it would be better if they dedicated separate Schaum's outlines to each subject - statics and dynamics - and covered more ground in each subject rather than putting both subjects in the same book. This outline even has one chapter on mechanical vibrations, but it is just barely an overview and hardly gets into the subject at all. It might be best if that chapter were deleted entirely and more space spent on the subjects at hand.

A Great self study book
By Gregory C. Itle
I bought this book 12 years ago in case i ever needed it. I have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and a minor in math and we were not required to take an engineering mechanics book in school. I now need the material for my energy research. It is an excellent book although i do have more experience than an undergraduate. It does a decent job explaining how it solves the solved problems. Use this book in tandem with STATICS AND DYNAMICS by Hibbeler (i have the fifth edition) and if you still need help the rea problem solver mechanics. Using those three books you will not see a problem that you cannot solve at the undergraduate level.

Engineer This!
By Mr. Pard
I wholeheartedly recommend this treatise on statics anddynamics, one which I am surprised has not been nominated for aPulitzer Prize. The explanations of the concepts are impeccable, butbuy this book for the cool Venn Diagrams that illustrate most pages.
Of course, one should expect this book to be of high quality, as one of its authors is Dr. Charles Best. Dr. Best is famous for having taught in the Engineering Department at Lafayette College for decades, chairing its Bachelor of Arts in Engineering degree program.
