It's about time for a how-to book on TEACHING ONLINE

Ko and Rossen's paperback on TEACHING ONLINE is small in size and simple to read, but it contains all essential information needed by a teacher or professor who has suddenly found himself or herself thrust into the mushrooming world of online learning. More and more professors are being told that they must produce a computer-based class, and that they must manage that class themselves, but fewer and fewer universities are providing comprehensive training for this totally new technique. TEACHING ONLINE is the book that will save the day for these pressured professors. It will also guide the enthusiastic cybersleuth through teacherly tips about preparing a class, accessing online libraries, controlling unrurely cyberstudents, encouraging coversation, taking tests, and all sorts of other nitty gritty. Only for the noobs

The first 178 pages concern such topics as how to use a computer, the web and a course management system ... and thus isn't particularly helpful if you have even a passing grasp of these matters. The middle section of the book - Teaching in The Online Classroom - is okay, though a much better treatment of teaching is in the venerable McKeachie's Teaching Tips by Wilbert J. McKeachie. If it's online activities you're really interested in, get Ryan Watkins' "75 e-Learning Activities: Making Online Learning Interactive." The last section of the book - New Trends and Opportunities - is little more than uncritical pontification and is probably worth skipping even if you found some utility in the material from the prior sections of the book.

A Great Intro and Overview

Ko and Rossen do an excellent job of laying out a lot of basic concepts if you are involved in any kind of project that involves teaching online.
I have a read a few books dealing with this topic and this one does a better job than any of the others that I have come across in helping the reader to understand the big picture- from getting to know your institutions resources to managing student behavior online. There are a lot of great tips to help the online teacher deal with any number of potential problem areas.
My only complaint would be that some of the technology discussedd is a little bit dated, but it is still useful and I'm sure that will be updated in the next edition.
One other resource for which this book in invaluable is the collection of Web Resources at the end of every chapter that often provide real world examples of the concepts being discussed.

A 1983 publication full of past civilizations, flower essence effects & their uses both phycially & emotionally Must have!!

This book took a lot of research to produce. It covers in detail the effects of the Flower Essences on both the physical body and emotional
states not only for humans, but for animals. There is an excellent glossary of the Esoteric Terms helping more so the Novice Practioners,
or those new to the healing arts understand the many healing techniques that have been hidden from our civilization. Our bodies are programmed to "heal thyself" without the use, in most cases of "Big Pharma" drugs, if only we seek the truth to get well, & maintain a healthy body on all levels. Although this book was published in 1983 it is in rich in knowledge of the Akashic Records, Atlantis, Lemuria civilizations & what has been learned past, present, & future. For any practitioner in the healing arts, all fields this book is rich in helping us learn from the past to cause a "better" future for all of mankind & God's precious animals.

Some Great Ones and Some Not-So-Great Comprise Vol. 5 of Philip K. Dick's Short Works

Total disclosure: throughout my reading life, I’ve not always been the biggest fan of the works of Philip K. Dick. In fact, I’ve read some short stories that I found to be just painful slogs to get through. I can’t say that there’s any one specific reason that’s previously come to mind in why I’ve struggled with his works; rather I now think it’s that I just hadn’t had enough exposure to his singular style that presented a particular obstacle I couldn’t overcome.

Because he’s enjoyed such a revered reputation, I figured it was time for me to crack down and read a complete collection of short stories, perhaps taking in more and more of his work in order to better understand what it was specifically that put up a wall between me and this author. I’m glad I did, because I suffered a bit of an epiphany with WE CAN REMEMBER IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE: VOLUME FIVE OF THE COLLECTED STORIES OF PHILIP K. DICK.

See, I’d always thought of Dick as what I’d call an “idea man.” My impression was that his particular style required grounding in a strongly compelling idea, be it some futuristic technology or some exceptional problem that had to be overcome. About halfway through Volume 5, I realized not only was that a good summation of the writer but also he really didn’t “invest” in characters. At least, I’d argue he didn’t “invest” in them as much as author Ray Bradbury or Isaac Asimov or even Arthur C. Clarke did. This isn’t to say that he considered them baggage; instead, I think I realized that he just didn’t seem them as important as ‘the science fiction’ element OR the underlying theme of the work.

When I reached that understanding between me and him, all of a sudden I found it easier to get through his stories, even those that perhaps were hamstrung by an idea not as compelling as the last one he explored. This elevated my opinion of the collection here, and I’m glad to say that there are some real winners wrapped within only a handful of those ‘slogs’ I mentioned above.

For those wishing to know specifically what’s in here, I’m thrilled to give an accounting. This volume includes “The Little Black Box,” “The War With the Fnools,” “A Game of Unchance,” “Precious Artifact,” “Retreat Syndrome,” “A Terran Odyssey,” “Your Appointment Will Be Yesterday,” “Holy Quarrel,” “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” “Not By Its Cover,” “Return Match,” “Faith of Our Fathers,” “The Story To End All Stories For Harlan Ellison’s Anthology,” “The Electric Ant,” “Cadbury, The Beaver Who Lacked,” “A Little Something For Us Tempunauts,” “The Pre-Persons,” “The Eye of the Sibyl,” “The Day Mr. Computer Fell Out Of Its Tree,” “The Exit Door Leads In,” “Chains of Air, Web of Aether,” “Strange Memories of Death,” “I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon,” “Rautavaara’s Case,” and “The Alien Mind.”

Lastly, the volume is closed out by a collection of notes uncovered by the author that discuss the ideas in this book specifically. (I didn’t get much more from the notes, certainly not as much as I did from the better stories.)

For the record, “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” is a classic. (That’s the foundation for the film TOTAL RECALL.) “A Little Something for Us Tempunauts” has a great idea, but it’s character bits could be a bit stronger. “The Pre-Persons” is nothing short of brilliant, though it’s subject matter will likely offend as many as it energizes. “The Electric Ant” is another great tale that could probably get adapted for a big budget movie someday if the dynamics can be worked out. And “Holy Quarrel” will make you think twice about the dangers of your PC computer achieving even the smallest measure of sentience.

It’s a great collection, and – if you can make it through a few of the lesser items in here – then you’ll no doubt become the same kind of convert to the man’s genius that I’ve become. Like I said, I don’t mean to put down Dick in any way: he’s clearly ‘one for the ages’ that deserves to be revered by audiences everywhere. It’s just that the sheer volume of the author’s output almost assured that he’d have more than a few misfires, and I think that happens when there isn’t as much investment in character as there is in the associated ideas.

This is a great book, easy to understand- but the printing was off and there are random Pages in the middle of the book and scattered throighout that shouldnt be there. There are also some pages missing. It was probably just this printing because none of the books my classmates have are like that.

Simple and Concrete methods to gain control of your emotions and thoughts!

The suggestions in this book simply work.

I use it whenever a problem arises in my life.

-One day I got three parking tickets.
-One day I couldn't find my car for 30 minutes in an airport parking lot.
-One day I was stressed waiting for my offer to get approved.
-One day I hurt my shoulder very badly and was worried it would never be the same.
-One day a close friend betrayed me.

We all know stressful situations can creep in, they affect our breathing, our mood, our appetite, and even our digestion.

The point is, in each of those cases the lessons in this book came to my mind and I was able to use the techniques taught to regain control of my emotions and tackle the problems with a clearer head.

This is the first book I have read that tackles mindset in a non hippie esoteric manner.

I recently went to a Gorilla Mindset Seminar to get to know Mike a bit better.

I wanted to check his demeanor, his friends, his wife, and decide if this man is congruent with the claims he makes online.

What I found was that he is even better in real life!

He is the real thing, and he's a really NICE GUY despite all the trolling online!!

He did not try to sell anything to us. Everyone there already had Gorilla Mindset.

He paid for the venue out of pocket and charged us nothing.

He spent the entire time going over the techniques in Gorilla Mindset and answering our questions.

Believe it or not Mike is actually trying to help people!

I highly suggest this book to anyone looking for concrete and practical steps to get better control of their emotions.

Inspired to real action.

On a whim I purchased this book based on my Audible recommendations. I'm that guy who buys the 3 extra credits two weeks into the month because I burn the monthly credit quick.

Mike's tone and cadence is like that of a concerned friend. You can hear his concern and you can relate to his own struggle with many of the problems you are likely facing that he either mastered through the techniques he presents or is working through currently. This is not some pie-in-sky nonsense. It's an applicable workbook built for people who are tired of being mediocre, tired of being beholden to undeserving people above and around them or simply looking to make an already good life substantially better and more focused.

So after the first listen, which clocks in around 4 hours, I had decided very resolutely to integrate a variety of habits/techniques Mike suggests in the book:
1. Contrast showers/Cold showers
2. State control - Focusing on changing your state - Empowered, resourceful, and invincible.
3. Supplementation - Almost everything he recommends
4. Dropping processed nonsense from my diet
5. Juicing/Smoothies - Joe Rogan Kale shake specifically

While I was focusing on those things I was also listening to his podcast Danger and Play since then.

Then I listened a second time.

After the second time I was hell bent. I'm now working on a modified 30-day challenge that one of Mike's friends, Victor Pride, advocates on his site.
Essentially:
No porn.
No refined carbs, or processed nonsense.
Cold showers.
Gym daily.
Methodical to-do lists daily
5am Wake up
No snacking
Answer yes or no questions with yes or no.

I am sixteen days into the challenge and experiencing great success.

I listen to Mike's podcast daily now and am in the process of beginning my own blog and podcast.

I'm leaving this review because like Mike says, "Until you write down the idea and create something it's nothing."

Highly recommended.

PS: The picture is having lost 7.5lbs since having started the challenge.

3 Stars Out of Respect for Mike, but a Rather Disappointing Book

As a medium to long-term reader of "Danger and Play" (I've been following the blog for about a year and check it on and off), I had high hopes for "Gorilla Mindset" and expected a lot of original and thought provoking content, as this is what Mike is known for. This book failed to live up to expectations in 3 major ways:

1). Unoriginal: Very little of the advice in the book is that new or original, and a lot of it is extremely generic. For example, the chapter on money talks about investing in index funds, the chapter on weight loss talks about eating natural foods and minimizing starch and dairy, and the chapter on self-talk talks about being positive. This is all good advice, but as a compulsive reader, investor, and fitness fanatic, this is extremely basic (all of it is probably the advice you would get on page 1 if you picked up a book on any of those respective topics)

2). Lazy/Minimal Effort: Many of the recommendations in the book were copied almost word for word from "Danger and Play." I noticed this especially on the chapters about posture, but all chapters were guilty of this to some degree

3). Poor Attention to Detail/Idea Development: I like what Mike did with the structure of the book (touching on a number of disparate elements and connecting them to mindset), but the way he developed each idea was extremely poor. Most books I found groundbreaking would bring up some controversial ideas, develop each in a lot of detail, then connect this to a new idea in a series of logical steps ("So Good They Can't Ignore You" by Cal Newport is a great example), but this book gave a number of half baked ideas, provided minimal evidence, then jumped on to something new. A lot of the advice were things prefaced with "try this, some people say it works", or "I used to do this, had mixed results, but hey, why not do it yourself?". Scientific research was minimal and almost laughable (Mike brought on "experts" and simply had them verify all of his opinions-he never actually challenged his ideas). As such, this book gave me little faith that Mike really knew what he was writing about or that his ideas would work for me

In sum, I found the book pretty disappointing in a number of ways, although there is definitely
some useful information here (the stuff on supplementation about NAC and ZMA for example or the information on posture). I gave 3 stars as I respect Mike and don't want to label this a 1 or a 2, but I do think he could have done much better, and as is, you could get much better info by picking up any basic book on any of the various elements that "Gorilla Mindset" addresses
