This book is amazing! I purchased it with the plan of starting to write some of my own bits. I wrote one or two but never pursued it much further because life got in the way. I will say, however, that it was still very much a worthwhile purchase if for no other reason than learning more about the mechanics of comedy has actually allowed me to appreciate just watching and listening to comedy even more!

John immediately takes you by the hand and gets you writing jokes on any subject, in a variety of styles.

I would love to see John write a book focused on the Comic Strip and similar short form humor.

nice elementary text on Bayesian methods

This is an excellent introductory text designed for a first course in statistics. It covers all the topics that are typically in a first course. However, all other texts at this level take the frequentist approach to inference. A few may have sections that introduce Bayesian ideas but the Bayesian approach is a paradigm for statistical inference and as such the approach should be incorporated in all statistical topics. Berry shows that this can be done without the student having to know calculus. To understand Bayesian methods the student mainly has to know that posterior probability = likelihood x prior probability. Berry provides a good list of references for those who want to pursue more advanced topics.
This book is unique. It demonstrate that statistics can be taught from the Bayesian approach in the very beginnning. This is much like what Noether did when he wrote an introductory text in statistics taking a strict nonparametric approach.

The text is loaded with exercises and the exposition is very clear. There are many useful and entertaining diagrams. Many examples are taken from real medical problems. Medicine is an area in which Berry has done a great deal of consulting and his experience shows in his examples. This should be the text to turn to if you want an introduction to the subject. If you know the basics and want more advanced treatment go to the references mentioned in Berry's preface.

Unsuitable as an introductory text, requiring advanced mathematical understanding

As a primer on Bayesian statistics for an intermediate or advanced statistics course,
Donald Berry has written a fascinating an insightful guide for the reader who enjoys
algebraic calculation and mathematical proofs. However its claims that it is
designed as "an introductory textbook on statistics" is where the reader may
be deceived. In the preface, Berry writes "mathematical level of this book is
minimal with only an exposure to high school algebra expected".

There are many excellent textbooks introducing the subject of statistics,
and aimed at people with only high school algebraic experience - this book is not
one of them however. Instructors should read this text carefully, and completely,
before even considering assigning it as reading in an introductory course.

The book itself is incredibly dense, and often the problems contained within
require extensive knowledge of statistical calculations and probability theory.
Even as a graduate student who adores statistical techniques, this is heavy going.
That is not to say that it is completely inaccessible to the reader, and would
not be an appropriate introductory text for graduate study. The reader may find
it frustrating, however, going back and learning statistics from first principles,
but will gain some insight into Bayesian probability theory.

Additionally, the book requires the use of Minitab, and does not evaluate other alternate
computer methods of calculation. If you're happy to do calculations by hand, this book
may still be of use, but at a minimum it needs to be revised and computer calculations
discussed. There are many free or online Bayesian calculators available, which you
should explore before falling back to the books hand calculations.

You may also prefer some of the many Bayesian statistics books available designed for the beginner,
such as Introduction to Bayesian Statistics, Introduction to Applied Bayesian Statistics and Estimation for Social Scientists (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)

Excellent introduction.

This is a truly clear and thoughtful introduction to Bayesian statistics.Nothing is taken for granted as the author leads you through examples and concepts. This was my first introduction to Bayesian statistics, and Berry makes it seem so much more reasonable and closer to real research/real life than the artifice involved in other approaches.

Forty years later, and the "Idiot Book" is still unmatched

First, my credentials for this review. From 1971 to 1994 (with insignificant gaps), I've owned and driven three Vokswagen buses (not including a parts bus)and used this manual to keep all of them on the road. As of this writing, I'm driving my fourth bus. I've gone through four copies of the Idiot Book, using each one until it either fell to pieces, became illegible from grease and oil stains, or needed to be updated as I bought a later-model bus. It has guided me through six or seven engine rebuilds (I used my engines very, very hard) and God knows how many other procedures ... I think that I've done every single procedure in the book that applied to my particular makes and models. And using this book, I've done work on various WV bugs, buses, and squarebacks that belonged to friends of mine.
I agree with everybody who calls this the indispensable reference for VW owners. I also agree with those who point out its shortcomings. Muir quotes a friend of his, on a review of another VW book. as saying "I agree one hundred percent with ninety percent of what he says." That could also apply to my own feelings about this book.
As a technical manual, it mostly consists of solid information -- solid enough, anyway, to get you back on the road so you can find somebody to show you how to do it the right way. I've always advised a prospective repairer to own both this book and another manual (my favorite was the green Volkswagen Official Service Manual, also called the "Bentley"), read the Muir write-up first to get a general idea of what to do, and then compare it to the other manual, note the differences, and ask somebody why the differences are there. Usually it's because Muir assumes you're making do with a minimum of tools, or are too cash-strapped to make a proper fix. Occasionally, you'll find that John was flat wrong about something (such as how to warm it up in the morning, or why chokes should be disabled, or why the 009 distributor was perfect in every way), or that your particular model had a different set-up than the ones he was familiar with.
But to simply compare this book with other technical manuals would be to ignore the most important feature of this book, which is its ability to empower you. It presumes that the reader has no technical aptitude and starts you gently down the road to proficiency and self-confidence. I'll bet that more mechanics have been inspired by this book than any other technical manual ever written. Not only that, but once you have discovered that you can indeed perform a repair competently, you get a sneaking suspicion that there are other things you can do if you apply the same confidence, common sense, and ingenuity that John taught you about. I doubt if I would have had the courage to time a sewing machine, install a hard drive, build a mandolin, or re-assemble a hang glider if John hadn't shown me that I had the potential to do these things.
This book has survived because of its idiosyncrasies, not in spite of them. John writes that "You must do this work with love or you will fail. You don't have to think, but you must love." He's telling you something important about Life here, and about the relationship we have to our possessions and to our work. Forty years later, these are still wise words, and to find them in an automotive manual is astonishing. Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" tried to apply philosophical principles to machine repair, but it failed because he was no mechanic and tried to gauge his mechanic's skill according to his own expectations of what a mechanic's mind-set should be. John knew better. He knew, and taught, that you achieve oneness with the machine by applying mind, heart, and hands together, and by listening to the machine as it tries to tell you what needs to be done. If there's ever been another book like that, I haven't heard of it. And if there is, I'll wager that the author has read the "Idiot Book."

This book will be your most important tool

I used the first or second edition to rebuild several VW engines in the 70s and 80s. More Zen than "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" - it's a philosophical treatise as well as a practical repair manual - and it succeeds at both. I bought a new copy recently. It was silly to buy a manual for a vehicle I don't own. Why did I do that? Is love too strong a word? How about loyalty? or appreciation?
Browsing through the section "Changes and New Ideas," on page 457, I found the solution to a problem I had 40-some years ago! The technique requires a special device - a wooded pencil! That one tip could have saved me (or could save you) from having to split the crankcase. If you drive and/or repair air-cooled VWs this book will be your most important tool.

I keep giving them away...

I think this is the 4th or 5th copy of this book I've purchased.

Armed with this book and a few tools, I added 85,000 miles to the 90,000 already on a '71 Super Beetle before trading it for a '68 (heaven help me it WAS chartreuse!) Microbus, which carried me up and down the Alaska Highway and crisscrossed the Western states with me for another 150,000. Along the way I learned to rebuild engines, tune the ignition, adjust the valves, rebuild brakes and steering gear, often camped out in primitive conditions.

Old but running VWs are getting harder to find at good prices. The ones left have either been restored to like new running condition or extensively modified and are beyond the means of the sort of people who would like to learn their ways and workings from John Muir. In the alternative, there are complete basket cases in need of extensive, professional restoration and repair. Sadly, there are very few one-owner Bugs left for 16 year olds looking for reliable transportation. Sad, but the same was true of Model A Fords when I was 16...which is why my first car was a Bug. I wish I still had it.

I saw a Beetle for sale the other day, but I was too slow. But I bought another copy of this just in case. My ten-year-old immediately claimed it for his own and it's his new, favorite bedtime book.

The authors draw on unpublished and, in some cases, hitherto unknown material to present a comprehensive new account of the life of this enigmatic and controversial Scottish genius.
In January 1926 Baird was the first publicly to demonstrate real television. Other pioneering achievements followed, including the first transatlantic transmission, the first demonstrations of colour television and stereoscopic television, and the first video recordings. In the 1930s he twice televised the Derby, and was the first to demonstrate television technology in the cinema in both black-and-white and colour. During World War II he developed high-definition and stereoscopic television in colour, and invented the first all-electronic colour television tube. He also made significant advances in radio imaging, secret signalling, fibre optics, infra-red scanning, and fast facsimilie transmission.
Throughout his life he struggled with ill health and lack of funding, to the extent that he paid for his initial research efforts and his final, heroic, and perhaps most startling, developments out of his own pocket.
This balanced, thoroughly documented and splendidly readable account throws new light not only on Baird himself, but on many of those associated with him. Truth is separated from legend, and the facts are uncovered behind Baird's auto-biographical memoir, published in 1988 as Sermons, Soap and Television, the text of which can now be compared with a recently discovered manuscript containing his own corrections.
Fresh information is revealed about the 'lost' years in London and Hastings in the early 1920s, which includes for the first time details of the company Baird established to sell soap, his unconventional romance, and the Falkirk connection.
Special treatment is given to Baird's troubled relationship with the BBC, and in particular to the role played by the corporation's director general, Sir John Reith. There is a full account of Baird's brave efforts to establish a presence in the USA. Also disclosed is the background to the boardroom coup which resulted in Baird being relieved of his duties as managing director of the company which he had founded.
In the light of their review of existing sources and examination of fresh evidence, the authors reach several conclusions which modify or challenge received opinion. Much of the documentation of from family and other archives, including Baird's wartime letters to his friend Sydney Moseley, extracts from the private diaries of Eustace Robb (the BBC's first television producer), company memos and reports of the early 1930s, and many of the sixty photographs, has never before been published.

Inconsistent flow, weak characters, editing issues

I really wanted to like this one, but the more I read, the more it fell apart. I kept reading for a lot longer than I should have, I think, hoping that something would sway me toward the positive, but I finally just bailed at around 85%.

Shamrocks and Secrets is the story of Christi, a woman of Irish descent being pursued by and eventually falling in love with Patrick, a powerful Irish Mob boss. However, it's overly romanticized and underdeveloped, and it could have used a couple more editors before going to print.

Initially, Christi irritated me with her references to Patrick being in the Mafia instead of the Mob. Yes, Americans more familiar with the Gambinos than the Westies tend to apply Mafia to everything organized crime, but I would have expected a woman of Irish descent to differentiate — or at least for someone in Patrick's family to mention the favored terminology. And I believe Christi was meant to be strong and independent, generally unswayed by Patrick's wealth and power, but after a strong start, she began to lack depth and ended up being more of a two-dimensional representation of those traits. A few of her actions contradicted Patrick, but mostly she allowed herself to be controlled by him, such as when she attempted to leave their first date but ended up being driven back to his penthouse without so much as a grumble to the contrary. Her primary issue with him was her assumption that all men involved in organized crime are unfaithful, as if that's the most dangerous thing about becoming involved with a member of the Mob. Sure, she wasn't thrilled about the criminal side of things, either, but the frequency with which she brought up his apparent need to have numerous affairs made his illegal activity seem like an afterthought.

Patrick's character was just as thin and strangely stereotypical. Rather than work at getting to know her, he started in with expensive and over-the-top displays of his wealth and power immediately upon informally meeting her. While it was later explained that he had known about her for years and simply waited patiently until a time when she was more mature and less naive to begin pursuing her, his staking his claim on her and attempting to woo her with gifts was just too much and too soon to be believed. Christi rather weakly resisted for only a short while before putting aside her principles, and it felt like much of that development was skipped in order to get to the next scene more quickly.

I also quickly became annoyed with the editing issues. Terms of endearment and polite addresses were capitalized, as if Patrick had been knighted by the Queen herself, and for every properly placed semicolon, it seemed there was another sentence in which a comma was incorrectly used instead. To the author's credit, many of the mistakes I noticed were the kind that most people wouldn't catch, but any good editor would have noticed them right away. At the very least, someone with a few extra English classes under the belt would have saved that poor, abused apostrophe from pluralized surnames.

The general flow of the story was pretty inconsistent as well, and it was difficult to tell whether the time between scenes and events was just a few hours or as long as a few weeks. As a result, the plot felt rushed, as if much of getting to the relationship between Christi and Patrick had happened behind the scenes, and we readers were only getting the Cliff Notes version. The pace felt a lot more like a serial, much like single chapters are posted in fanfiction stories, rather than a standard novel, and I have to admit that as soon as Patrick's eyes and hair were described, I had visions of Twilight all-human fanfic. (EDIT: Just went to grab the cover from Goodreads, and the very first review said this one used to be fanfic. I need to start paying attention to these things before I buy. At least then I'd be able to narrow selections to only those authors whose work I know I previously enjoyed, rather than offend someone I probably know.)

I do think the story idea was good, and it had the potential to be very entertaining, even if it strayed from gritty realism. The cover certainly caught my eye, and the synopsis made it sound like a really fun read. But while it fell flat for me, I suspect with some generous substantive and copyediting, it could have been a wonderful story.

I was so excited to read this book and it didn't disappoint. Cayce Poponea's debut novel is filled with love, romance, and intrigue. Her words are beautifully written and we get an Irish heritage lesson. You really must read this. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down!!!

This book was full of memorable characters. I loved the banter between all the characters and that each character played a vital role in the plot, not just the two main characters.

Christi is an Irish girl in Chicago. She works for one of the most successful catering companies and as an amazing family, both blood and chosen family. I loved Christi and her no nonsense attitude. She was feisty, loving, and very protective. She does not put up with anyone’s crap, doesn’t matter if you are the deadbeat father to her niece or the most dangerous man in Chicago. No one is exempt from her temper.

Patrick Malloy is the most powerful and dangerous man in Chicago. He has one weakness…Christi O’Rourke. Christi doesn’t know this at first but she will learn it quickly. One of my favorite things about Patrick is that he doesn’t fight his feelings or attraction to Christi once he knows he is ready for her. I absolutely loved the nicknames that Patrick gives the closest people around him and I love how Christi gets so pissed off about them and so confused on who he is talking about and that just frustrates her even more.

Their love story really isn’t the most conventional but it is still a great love story. There is some drama in this book and it made the book rawer during those parts. My one complaint about this book was everything was leading up to the wedding but when the wedding came it seemed rushed to me. I was hoping to get all the details of that special day. I am hoping the reader will get more insight and details in the next book.

This is a very good book.

This is a detailed, well researched study of natural sources for helping arthritis sufferers. It is very thorough, covering diet, herbs and vitamins, exercise, natural pain relieving methods, ( i.e. acupuncture and more).
After reading it on kindle I decided to purchase a hard copy to refer to some information more readily. So, I recommend this book to arthritis sufferers who want to stop taking medication and pain relievers that in the end do not cure, but even do even more damage to the body than the disease.
