Sports Tourism: participants, policy and providers is an unparalleled text that explains sports tourism as a social, economic and cultural phenomenon that stems from the unique interaction of activity, people and place. Unlike other texts, it seeks to present sports tourism as a unique area that produces its own unique issues, concerns and controversies.

The text tackles these issues from three viewpoints:

  • participants: examining the profiles, motivations and behaviour patterns of sports tourists to create a typology of participants

  • policy: analyses the response by policy makers to this phenomenon and the problems of achieving integration between two sectors with historically different cultures

  • providers: their motivations, aims, objectives and strategies

Illustrated by international case studies in each chapter, and with four extended case study chapters, Sports Tourism: participants, policy and providers examines this area using real life experiences and concrete evidence.

In-Depth Research and Coverage
By Robonline
I did my Masters dissertation on 'outdoor adventure' sport tourism and I got really fed up with the Noddy books that were available to me (eg Standeven and DeKnop "Sport Tourism", Hudson "Sport and Adventure Tourism"). Now I'm starting a part-time PhD on sport tourism this book has enabled me to really think theoretically and conceptually about the area, its the only book I've come across that doesn't treat the topic in a really basic manner. The book goes beyond the usual impacts and events material to develop an analysis of industry stakeholders and the pariticipants in the sport tourism industry. The model of sport tourism participants is particularly useful in thinking about different types of sport tourists. Throughout the book its clear that the authors are drawing on a wide range of empirical research, and their perspectives and arguments are coherent and consistent. In fact, the cohenrence of the book is one of its strengths and something that elevates it above many other books in the area, particularly those that are edited collections.

surprising mix of efficiency and depth
By Stephen Cataldo
I only budgeted a brief time to reading the book so far, but managed to transform my LinkedIn profile. I'm usually a skeptic about these kinds of books and hope other social media guides will copy the style here:
1) The book gets you exactly where you need to go as far as LinkedIn as a website, so you don't waste time looking for buttons if you're not spending your life at LinkedIn.
2) But then the advice comes in short, sharp but highly intelligent pieces, relevant to exactly where you are. She really knows what she's talking about, and puts the right piece of advice on the right page.

Not many authors smart enough to be subtle also do the work to be organized enough to match each edit button on a website. Where another book you might read a chapter of general advice and then stumble around trying to figure out what it means for you, here I'd read a paragraph and make a useful change, then repeat, all very quickly.

Not enough "how to" to make it worth paying for.
By Kristin W.
There were some helpful points about mistakes people make, especially about writing a better header, but overall there wasn't anything earth shattering. A lot of the same points I've seen in articles online. It was nice to have it all together, but truthfully I wouldn't buy this book or recommend someone to buy it. I think I got to read it for free as part of my Kindle Unlimited plan. When I finally did wind up redoing my Linked In profile, I hired a professional service to do it. For the $50 I spent on the service, worth every penny. Way better than some of the money I spent on these Kindle Linked In books. There just wasn't enough "how to" to make it worth the time or money.

The best book I've read on building an amazing LinkedIn profile
By Bartenderonduty
The title of this review pretty much says it all... This is by far the best book I've read on building an amazing LinkedIn profile (and I've been reading a lot lately as I look for new opportunities to network through social media). The author, Brenda Bernstein, goes to incredible lengths to analyze and test what works and what doesn't work on LinkedIn. In her book, Bernstein clearly outlines step-by-step what you need to do to improve, refine and increase the visibility of your profile. After following her advice, my LinkedIn profile views and appearances in searches have nearly doubled! I know that if I keep refining and updating my profile, as Bernstein suggests, I will see even greater results. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to build and improve their online presence via LinkedIn. This will be the best money you'll ever spend on your career.

The #1 New York Times bestselling Beyonders fantasy trilogy comes to a stunning and epic conclusion.

Jason and Rachel were not born in Lyrian. They did not grow up in Lyrian. But after all of the battles and losses, the triumphs and adventures, and most of all, the friendships forged in this fantastical world, Lyrian has become home to them in a way they never could have imagined.

And so, armed now with the prophecy of a dying oracle, they have gone on their separate quests—each surrounded by brave and powerful allies—knowing that the chance for success is slim. But Jason and Rachel are ready at last to become the heroes Lyrian needs, no matter the cost.

Packed with thrills, action, and drama, this third and final installment of Brandon Mull’s #1 bestselling Beyonders trilogy brings the series to a gripping conclusion.

From Booklist
Jason and Rachel, teens who entered Lyrian by chance in A World without Heroes (2011) and stayed to fight for its inhabitants’ freedom from the emperor in Seeds of Rebellion (2012), now risk their lives to fulfill the prophecy that offers the only gleam of hope. Those who enjoyed the many action scenes in the previous books will find plenty here as well, though the characters also spend a good deal of time in reflection and conversation. The question of whether to trust the prophecy looms large. While this volume concludes the Beyonders series, Mull leaves the door open for another series set in Lyrian. Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

Chasing the Prophecy CHAPTER 1 ACOLYTE
Rachel . . . help me . . . Rachel, please!

Rachel awoke, clutching her covers. She sat up on the soft mattress. Shadows shrouded her bedchamber. The telepathic voice in her head was unfamiliar. The female speaker was not Corinne, and not Ulani, who had recently learned to transmit simple thoughts over short distances.

Who are you? Rachel conveyed with all her will.

Rachel! I can’t hang on much longer. . . . Come now . . . please hurry!

Despite the urgency behind the message, the mental outcry was fading. Rachel had worked with several of the acolytes on speaking in silence, but so far only Ulani had succeeded. Was it possible that in a desperate moment one of the girls had unlocked the ability? Rachel slept in the area of the temple set apart for the acolytes. They were all relatively near. Who else at Mianamon would be able to contact her like this?

Apart from the words in her mind, the night was still. No sounds intruded from outside her room. Mianamon was not under attack. So what was the problem?

Who is this? What’s wrong?

The words came weakly, the mental equivalent of a whisper. Kalia. Training room. I tried a strong command. Failed. I hurt all over. . . . Don’t tell the others. . . . Please help me.

Kalia. Rachel had trained with the acolytes for months. Most had only a hint of Edomic talent. None had a natural ability like Rachel, but Kalia was among the more promising. On more than one occasion Rachel had tried to teach her to speak in silence.

Hold on. I’m coming.

Speaking an Edomic word, Rachel lit a bedside candle, then rose and shrugged into her acolyte robe. Kalia must have slipped down to the training room in the night for some extra practice. She must have attempted something too ambitious and lost control of the command. Rachel knew firsthand how debilitating the consequences of a failed Edomic directive could be.

If Kalia could still find the strength to call out mentally, she probably wasn’t fatally injured. But that didn’t mean she might not feel like she was going to die.

Rachel spoke another command, igniting a clay lamp. Picking it up, she unlocked her door and stepped into the hallway.

Darkness awaited beyond her lamplight in both directions. Rachel was not accustomed to roaming the Temple of Mianamon after-hours. She and her friends had been here for the whole winter, but she had never walked these stone corridors when all was dark and empty. The familiar passage suddenly seemed ominous.

Still there, Kalia?

No response came. The acolyte could be unconscious. Or she might simply lack the energy to send another message.

Rachel passed several doors. No life could be heard behind them. No light seeped through the cracks. After rounding a corner, she reached the stairway that led down to the training room. Beyond the bubble of light from her lamp, all was silent shadow. Rachel knew that outside the section of the temple reserved for acolytes, she could find the human guards who protected their privacy at all hours. She also knew where she could find Jason, Drake, or her other companions. Or she could call out mentally to Galloran or Corinne.

But the painful experience of a failed command was best kept private. Kalia would not appreciate others seeing her in an injured, weakened state. Straightening her shoulders, Rachel started down the stairs. She arrived at the bottom and moved along a broad hallway.

The darkness retreated from her approach until Rachel reached the door to the main training room. It was slightly ajar. Rachel nudged it open and stepped inside.

“Kalia?”

A vehement Edomic command answered her inquiry. The words demanded that Rachel hold still. As requested, her muscles locked up, leaving her temporarily immobilized.

Rachel knew this command! The acolytes of Mianamon practiced an Edomic discipline that enabled them to issue directives to people. Upon her arrival at Mianamon, Rachel had known how to use Edomic to get some animals to heed certain instructions, but she had never guessed that she might be able to use similar tactics on humans.

Commanding inanimate matter with Edomic was straightforward—all matter and energy understood the language. You simply needed to accompany the proper words with enough focused willpower to demand compliance. If you tried to accomplish too much, you would fail and face a backlash of physical and psychic traumas.

With animals it was trickier. Edomic did not work well on living things. Instead of compelling animals, you had to make suggestions that they could either heed or disregard. Ask too gently and the animal would ignore the directive. Push too hard and you risked the consequences of a failed command.

Humans were even more complicated. You couldn’t really use Edomic on the mind. You couldn’t implant a complex idea. It was more like speaking to the spine, suggesting a reflexive response that the mind would counter once it caught up. Rachel now knew roughly fifty suggestions that might work on a human, most of them at the level of dog commands: stay, lie down, turn around, jump. In a moment of distress, Rachel knew, the ability to cause an enemy to temporarily freeze or flop to the ground might prove very useful.

Rachel had practiced this discipline for months. None of the acolytes could match her skill at it. For instance, most of the girls could not demand any form of compliance from Ulani, but Rachel could freeze her with a word. Conversely, even the most capable acolytes couldn’t make Rachel do much more than twitch.

Except now she couldn’t move!

The command had been uttered with power and expertise. It held her like no command had since her first day of training. Was her guard down because of fear? Sure, she was scared, but she was resisting the mandate the same way she had practiced. It just wasn’t working.

Rachel heard another muttered command. A black metal spike streaked toward her chest, gleaming in the light of her lamp.

Rachel still couldn’t move. Instead, she spoke in silence. Rachel had lots of practice moving physical objects. She telepathically ordered the spike to hold still. It stopped just over a foot from her chest, quivering in midair.

More words issued from the shadows beyond her lamplight. A robust will contended with hers, inching the spike toward her. Rachel had regained control of her body, but she didn’t want to advertise her recovery to her enemy. Instead, Rachel bore down and pushed the spike away. The will of her enemy broke, and the spike went sailing into a wall.

Rachel knew the location of many torches, cressets, and lamps in this room. With a word she illuminated several at once. The light displayed Kalia charging toward her, a knife in one hand, a long needle in the other.

Rachel commanded Kalia to fall to the floor. The acolyte obeyed, losing hold of her knife. Kalia tried to compel Rachel to freeze again. The expertly phrased directive worked for a fraction of a second, but Rachel was ready this time, and promptly reasserted control. She then countered by commanding Kalia to be still.

“What are you doing?” Rachel spat.

Kalia remained immobile for barely a second. The girl rolled over and looked up, red spittle leaking from one corner of her mouth. Rachel realized that when Kalia had lost control of the spike, the resulting failure must have injured her.

Kalia growled a command, and the knife darted at Rachel. Ducking to the side, Rachel seized control of the knife and put it to the throat of the acolyte. Holding it there took great control, but Rachel had practiced manipulating physical objects more diligently than any other Edomic discipline.

“Why?” Rachel demanded, panting.

Kalia spat blood. Sweat dampened her face. Her feral eyes were panicked and angry. Kalia was among the younger acolytes. Although she looked to be in her twenties, she was actually closer to fifty. Acolytes employed routine Edomic meditation to slow the aging process.

“Why?” Rachel repeated.

Kalia spoke a command, trying to seize control of the knife, but Rachel countered with a stern mandate, and Kalia’s effort dissolved, crushed by a superior will. Rachel angled the knife away as the acolyte doubled over, writhing in pain. The failed commands were taking a heavy toll.

“When did you get so good?” Rachel demanded. “You never moved objects.”

I never spoke in silence, either. The furious words burned in Rachel’s mind. He should have given the order earlier, before you had so much training. I could have taken you when you first arrived. I know I could have!

Who ordered this? Rachel pressed.

Use your imagination, Kalia communicated, her rage diminishing. My only solace is that he’ll get you yet. I chose the winning side. He asked too much of me at the wrong time. Bad for me. But it won’t save you. Mark my words. He’ll get you all.

You work for Maldor?

He’ll kill every last one of you!

Galloran burst into the room, his blindfold off, his torivorian sword drawn, several treefolk and human guards following in his wake. He looked from Rachel to Kalia. I sensed a great deal of Edomic in use.

Kalia jabbed the long needle into her thigh.

What have you done? Rachel asked.

Another inane question! How does such a simpleton access so much power? It’s infuriating! It’s disgusting! Kalia began to convulse. Red foam frothed from her lips.

“She tried to kill me,” Rachel explained, turning away in horror and disgust.

Galloran took her lamp, set it aside, then wrapped his arms around her. Rachel felt embarrassed that he must feel her trembling. But she was not embarrassed enough to reject the comfort. I’m so sorry, Rachel. I never would have guessed Maldor could have planted an assassin at Mianamon.

Where can’t he come after us? This is the one place in Lyrian where I felt safe!

The sad truth is that no place in Lyrian is secure anymore, no matter how remote. And the problem will only worsen. We’ve been planning to leave soon. Let’s make it tomorrow. We have stood still for too long.

Rachel clung to Galloran, wishing she could disappear. Kalia had set a trap and tried to kill her!

A man covered from head to toe in moss brought the knife and the iron spike to Galloran. “Both poisoned. Giantsbane. Just like the needle.”

“Later,” Galloran said. He waved a hand. “Leave us.”

The men and treefolk exited the training room.

“I’m so sorry, Rachel,” Galloran said again, still holding her.

Rachel felt bad for the amount of pain in his voice. “It wasn’t your fault. Thanks for coming so quickly.”

“I was a fool for allowing you to room so far from the rest of us. I should have foreseen this possibility. Thank goodness you saved yourself. I could feel the strength behind her commands. This traitor was no novice. I did not know that any Edomic adepts of her ability remained. She must have hidden here for a long while.”

“More than thirty years,” Ulani said, entering the room. She glared bitterly at the fallen acolyte, then shifted her attention to Rachel. “Are you all right?”

“I’m all right,” Rachel managed. “It’s all right.”

Galloran continued to hold Rachel close. “Maldor must have known we were preparing to leave. He wanted to strike before we departed.”

Rachel scowled a little, pulling back from the embrace. “Why didn’t the oracle know about her? Why didn’t Esmira see this coming?”

“I wish she had,” Galloran said.

“I never sensed any evil in Kalia,” Ulani said. “Nor did I perceive unusual power. Potential, yes, but unrealized. Perhaps Kalia knew how to shield her mind from scrutiny. Perhaps Maldor only got to her recently. We may never know. Esmira saw many things, but I can’t imagine she spent much time looking for traitors among us. We were too isolated, too united against the emperor and all he stands for.”

“He tried to kill me,” Rachel said in a small voice.

After a final hard look at the body on the floor, Galloran tied his blindfold in place. Apparently, he didn’t want any more details to reach Maldor through his displacer eyes. “Maldor would have rejoiced at your death. But he has some idea of your abilities. He should have recognized that this Kalia, although talented, was probably not up to the challenge. This attack may have simply been a test.”

Rachel huffed softly. “Rough test.”

“Maldor knows no gentle games.” Galloran put an arm around her shoulders. “Try not to let this rattle you. Take solace that you rose to the occasion. Thankfully, we’ve kept the details of the prophecy from all at Mianamon save Ulani. Even so, Maldor knows exactly where we are and may have deduced some of our intentions. As we embark on our quests, we’ll all have trials to face in the coming days. I fear this is only the beginning.”

Gah!!
By akky3210
I haven't written a review in a while. In fact, when I look back on my reviews, they make me want to gag because they're so badly written. But that's besides the point--I couldn't NOT write a review for this book. I just...couldn't.

I bought A World Without Heroes the very day it came out. I bought Seeds of Rebellion the very day it came out. So it should come as no surprise that I bought this book the day it came out, and finished it that day too. And now it's been a week. And I've been spinning this book and this review and this series over and over in my head, and I can't not write a review. So, without further ado--

First things first: this book is DARK. Like, freakishly dark. As in, Mull probably could've--SHOULD'VE--gotten away with making his characters more like 17 or 18 than 13. (13!?) This book was definitely more Young Adult than Middle Grade. I felt that about the first two books as well, so it should come as no surprise that this book was essentially a punch in the gut emotionally. We go into the dang book knowing that--what was the phrasing--"the road to victory is paved with the blood of heroes"? We KNOW that.

About 40% in, I got really afraid Mull wouldn't kill any of my favorite characters. I had gone into this expecting some heavy-hitting, and I truly began to fear that we'd have lots of dead drinling spear-holders, but no one who we truly CARED about. I was wrong. Yeah. Lots of characters--BELOVED characters--are going to die. :(

But it doesn't make the characters growth and death and relationships less real or painful.

And ugh, the characters--Nedwin! Ferrin! (ah, Ferrin...) Tark, Rachel (Rachel!) Jason, Galloran, Drake--Jasher--Farfalee--Aram!! They are SO real. I find myself looking back at the book, wondering where they are now--are they laughing? are they crying? whatever happened to *I can't tell you because it would ruin the ending*?

This book was SO intricately done. Not intricately plotted, but intricately done. I am incredibly impressed with how Mull brought every single thread together in order to work this conclusion. The passing mention of "These Short Lives" in the Repository of Learning? The drinlings. I can't say any more--spoilers!--but I can say I am incredibly pleased with how this tapestry came together. I loved to see how this complex web of relationships and sacrifice and love was woven. And we got four--FOUR--chapters, plus a prologue, from Nedwin's POV, which had me LITERALLY doing a jig in my bedroom (not a good sight, I assure you)

And I think that what hit home about this book, to me personally--the power of LOVE against evil. The power of loyalty and honor getting us through the most difficult places (I'm lookin' at you, Nedwin!). The power of hope, and sacrifice, and belief in what seems the remotest chances, and...just...AGH! The emotions in this book are SO REAL, the grief is dealt with SO WELL, the conflicts are SO VITAL...

And the way the quests finally weave together--the influence they have on each other--the secret we discover at the end is so real and beautiful and PERFECT and unexpected and how-on-earth-did-I-miss-that and surprising and just...I couldn't stop laughing. I was truly afraid that whatever Jason set off to discover would be stupid or pointless or--worse--some random tidbit of information that totally turned the tide of the war with no PAIN behind it. Well, it was kind of that last one. I think readers will have a love-hate relationship with it, but it was still perfect.

I do have some complaints, of course. I feel like the ending was a bit abrupt, and I wish we had more of Jason's POV at the very end then we did, since he was the protagonist of the first novel. (I have my own opinions about the protagonists of the 2nd book and this one, but that's for some other time.) I felt that Jason's quest was never really concluded, even though we got what we were looking for. And I felt a little down about the way it finally, finally ended, though this epilogue was truly brilliant.

And that leads to my final question, dear readers-who-have-dug-through-my-awful-review. Is this story a tragedy?

I don't know.

Yes, good ultimately wins (because it's fantasy, after all, and if that's a spoiler to you then you need to read a different review (and I mean that as a jest)). Yes, evil is vanquished. BUT... at a cost. A tragic, beautiful cost.

And is this novel, this saga, a tragedy?

I still don't know. But it IS--I assure you--definitely, DEFINITELY worth picking up. Fablehaven is...nothing...compared to this. This, I think, is literature.

This is literature.

Very high quality fantasy
By Chad
I'll start with the cons (not too much). The Beyonders series is not quite Fablehaven, but it is very good nonetheless. The characters in Fablehaven are much more stronger than the characters in Beyonders. There is a ridiculous amount of characters in the Beyonders series, and most of them don't have much of a personality, especially Jason and Rachel. They aren't strong main characters, but the large pool of secondary characters make up for them. Also, as is standard with medieval fantasies, the characters talk in a more sophisticated manner than in other books. This shows quality writing to me, but I guess it can seem a little overboard sometimes.

I think this is one of the best books I've read in awhile. I almost completely forgot what has happened in the previous two books... Yet it didn't matter. The story is very gripping, and Brandon Mull has created an entire universe comparable to Lord of the Rings. The plot isn't necessarily original, but that doesn't matter. Brandon Mull has plenty of creativity and action in this series. Brandon Mull's writing is very high quality, this series is highly suggested.

Paradise Lot: Two Plant Geeks, One-Tenth of an Acre and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City, by Eric Toensmeier

When Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates moved into a duplex in a run-down part of Holyoke, Massachusetts, the tenth-of-an-acre lot was barren ground and bad soil, peppered with broken pieces of concrete, asphalt, and brick. The two friends got to work designing what would become not just another urban farm, but a "permaculture paradise" replete with perennial broccoli, paw paws, bananas, and moringa—all told, more than two hundred low-maintenance edible plants in an innovative food forest on a small city lot. The garden—intended to function like a natural ecosystem with the plants themselves providing most of the garden's needs for fertility, pest control, and weed suppression—also features an edible water garden, a year-round unheated greenhouse, tropical crops, urban poultry, and even silkworms.

In telling the story of Paradise Lot, Toensmeier explains the principles and practices of permaculture, the choice of exotic and unusual food plants, the techniques of design and cultivation, and, of course, the adventures, mistakes, and do-overs in the process. Packed full of detailed, useful information about designing a highly productive permaculture garden, Paradise Lot is also a funny and charming story of two single guys, both plant nerds, with a wild plan: to realize the garden of their dreams and meet women to share it with. Amazingly, on both counts, they succeed.

With their shared passion for plants and a commitment to creating as self-sustaining a garden as possible on a minuscule lot in a small New England city cursed with a terrible climate and even worse soil, Toensmeier and Bates set about converting their urban backyard into a permaculture paradise. Informed by his work on a seminal, two-volume encyclopedia devoted to the concept of forest gardening, Toensmeier transformed the infertile and debris-laden property behind the duplex he shared with Bates into a natural ecosystem teeming with edible plants. As the authors’ postage-stamp-size front yard morphed into a lush, tropical showcase that astounded their Massachusetts community, the backyard incorporated all the components necessary to produce fresh fruits and vegetables year-round using cold-hardy, mostly native plants that would ideally require a minimum amount of work for a maximum output. As a memoir of a purposeful life, Toensmeier’s work is engaging, honest, and natural. As a directive to other gardeners eager to establish natural ecosystems in unlikely settings, his work is instructive, illuminating, and inspirational. --Carol Haggas

Review

Publishers Weekly-

In this charming, true-life tale of urban regeneration and the birth of a forest garden movement, Toensmeier, famous among permaculture enthusiasts for his Perennial Vegetables and as coauthor of Edible Forest Gardens, tells the story behind the Holyoke, Mass., garden featured as a test case in the latter, which, in the course of eight years, he and Bates transformed from a bare backyard wasteland into a flourishing, edible Eden. In true permaculture fashion, the book follows not only the progression of the garden but also its influence on and relations with its creators’ lives—including a surprisingly Austen-like romantic element—their neighborhood, and the larger permaculture and forest gardening community. Bates, whose nursery business, Food Forest Farm, is an offshoot of this garden, contributes philosophical and personal essays interspersed throughout the narrative. Fans of Toensmeier and Bates’s work will be thrilled to read the details of their experiments with polycultures, their problems with and solutions for pests and overly aggressive plants, and their idiosyncratic plant choices. Adventurous readers with conventional gardens and lawns may be inspired to venture into the more integrated, evolutionary approach that this book so vividly and appealingly portrays.

Kirkus Reviews-

The front yard was a short, steep slope of asphalt with a tiny strip of sterile gravel and subsoil," write Toensmeier and Bates, with a "backyard that looked like a moonscape, sparely populated with tufts of crabgrass." It was the perfect place to launch their experiment: Could two men with horticultural experience and a love of nature turn a typical compact backyard into a garden full of lush plants and edible food? The authors chronicle their 10-plus years of trials and experiments, as they transformed their "moonscape" into a permaculture of "trees, shrubs, vines, and herbaceous perennials" that produced food at every level. By analyzing their soil and plotting the movement of shade and sun for a year, the authors discovered the prime locations to build a greenhouse and tool shed. They knew where to plant trees and perennials so that they could bring their site to life, and they developed a deeper kinship with the space and with each other. Along the journey, the authors present ideas like sheet mulching, which can transform a lawn into a useful garden plot capable of growing tomatoes and sweet corn in the first year. They also share their thoughts on the plants that can become noxious weeds despite their culinary uses. Toensmeier and Bates discuss both their triumphs and their defeats, as they experimented with chickens, nitrogen fixers, ground covers, numerous kinds of berry bushes and water plants. Although not a how-to guide, the authors give readers plenty of choices and ideas to think about when deciding whether to embark on this kind of gardening.

ForeWord Reviews-

“Urban agriculture is becoming a hot topic in sustainable farming circles as more people become interested in organic foods, healthy eating choices, and environmental topics. Given population densities in some areas, “urban agriculture” might seem like an oxymoron to some, but with careful planning and a sense of adventure, even a tiny plot of land can yield a bumper crop.

Longtime friends Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates certainly demonstrate the type of strategy and passion required for the effort. In their charming, insightful description of their tiny urban garden in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the two cover twelve years of growing, from their initial reaction to seeing the compacted, gravel-edged soil, to the moment when they have to consider the long-term future of their growing families, which likely means leaving their garden paradise.

Along with relaying various missteps and challenges, Toensmeier (with occasional contributions from Bates) layers together their experiences with natural pesticide controls, wild mushroom foraging, city regulations, berry plants, forest gardens, chickens, having girlfriends move in, trellis systems, and an array of other topics.

Dividing the garden’s history into four sections—sleep, creep, leap, and reap— Toensmeier creates a combination of personal memoir and permaculture guide. Filled with insight, but not too technical, he strikes an artful balance between giving useful detail and geeking out on gardening nuances. Although readers who want to learn more about compost and chicken coops may get the most out of their journey, Paradise Lot will still be a delight for someone who can’t even grow a houseplant.

As Toensmeier and Bates demonstrate, it doesn’t take twenty acres to start a garden filled with nourishing vegetables and gorgeous flowers; it just takes some vision, especially if the potential garden is a scruffy urban lot.

Part gardening guide, part personal story, the book is ultimately a call to action, with the pair proclaiming that it doesn’t matter what a patch of land looks like, as long as someone is willing to explore its potential. “We made our little paradise here,” Toensmeier writes. “Imagine what would happen if we as a species paid similar attention to all the degraded and abandoned lands of the world.”

Library Journal-

STARRED REVIEW "Part handbook, part memoir, this book details the evolution of a permaculture garden on an urban lot in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Having spent years describing permaculture gardens in a theoretical manner, Toensmeier (Perennial Vegetables) and his friend Bates (owner, Food Forest Farm Permaculture Nursery) put these theories into practice when they bought and moved into a duplex situated on a 1/10 acre rundown lot. Nearly a decade later, the lot is unrecognizable—a tropical paradise in the front and a wealth of more than 200 edible plants in the back. Toensmeier clearly explains the processes—needless to say, nothing changed overnight—that achieved this near-miracle. VERDICT: The authors’ prose pulls the reader into their lives, sparking a desire to see the result and try this kind of gardening. The appendixes are filled with useful information for readers who may be intrigued enough to create their own paradise. All readers interested in urban renewal or environmental issues will welcome this book."

“Although many of us dream of creating our ideal urban homestead from scratch, the reality is far less pristine: toxic soil, rampant exotic species, outdated codes, and all the other grit of city life. Paradise Lot is a practical manual, based on hard-won lessons, for working positively with the realities of our cities to create a sustainable, peaceful, and abundant oasis in the urban jungle. In this vivid and engaging work, Eric Toensmeier entices us with his journey as an example, explaining what to do, and what mistakes to avoid, to develop our own versions of an edible urban paradise.”--Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden

“Our connection to place defines us as gardeners and farmers just as much as the plants we choose to grow. The integration of perennial plantings, microclimate, and natural beauty comes about by listening to the land. What a delight to then have one of America’s preeminent permaculture teachers share his personal story with both place and partner. Sometimes that meaningful insight we need in shaping our own garden path comes from hearing of the successes and foibles other gardeners found on their path. The gift Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates offer in Paradise Lot is their heart for all things green.”--Michael Phillips, author of The Holistic Orchard and The Apple Grower

“Paradise Lot is a magnificent story about how two young broke landless 'plant geeks' transform an urban lot into a permaculture heaven capable of producing all their fruit and vegetables as well as attracting suitable mates. The book is a groundbreaking work on temperate-climate permaculture as well as a personal saga, as the author’s discovery and discussion of the differences between theory and practice goes beyond anything in the current permaculture literature. The book has a lot of information on growing and using various perennial food plants and, of particular value, it includes specific accounts of what didn’t work and why as well as what did. Paradise Lot should be particularly useful to those with small lots or poor or abused soil. Much writing in permaculture is for people with plenty of land and money. This is permaculture for the rest of us. Best of all, Paradise Lot is fun to read. It overflows with love—love of plants, love of land, love of adventuring on the edge of knowledge, and love of living. It’s hard to put down. I read it in two large gulps.”--Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener and Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties

“Paradise Lot is a timeless classic of urban permaculture in action that clearly shows design evolution over time. This is a true model of the change the world needs.”--Geoff Lawton, founder of Permaculture Research Institute and creator of Greening the Desert

“Just when I figured I had heard it all in growing food, comes a book that makes me realize I don’t know the half of it. Paradise Lot is an amazing, almost unbelievable account of how to grow some 150–200 food- and nitrogen-producing plants on a measly one-tenth of an acre, providing food year round in a cold climate. The authors reveal in great detail how they do this, starting with poor urban backyard soil and using totally organic and permaculture methods. They have raised 400 pounds of perennial fruits and vegetables in addition to many annual vegetables per year in this tiny garden. With more time, knowledge, and labor, they are sure they can produce appreciably more. If you want your imagination challenged and intrigued, this is the book for you. As the authors say, here is proof positive that with proper knowledge and will there is no such thing as food scarcity.”--Gene Logsdon, author of A Sanctuary of Trees and Small-Scale Grain Raising

“Eric has a leisurely, entertaining, and personable way of revealing how his own edible forest garden evolved. Along the way, the reader will learn design guidelines that can be used in virtually any climate. A good read full of insight and science.”--Robert Kourik, author of Designing and Maintaining Your Edible Landscape—Naturally

“Paradise Lot is an inspiring book that encourages exploration of the possibilities of growing edibles in any and every yard, no matter how small. And not only tomatoes or apples, but all sorts of edibles from hog peanuts (taste much better than their name) to pawpaws to mints to jostaberry. Join Eric Toensmeier and his friend Jonathan Bates on their ten-plus-year journey in creating a garden of eatin’ in a very small city lot. I can’t wait for the sequel!”--Lee Reich, PhD, author of Grow Fruit Naturally, The Pruning Book, and Landscaping with Fruit

Compelling narrative, excellent permaculture resource
By Zannah Marsh
I bought this book because I'm a budding urban gardener curious about permaculture (a sustainable, low maintenance, ecosystem-focused approach to growing food)... and I like a good story. Eric Toensmeier is a self-described "plant geek" and permaculture expert who also co-wrote "Edible Forest Gardens" a 2-volume, 1000+ page epic reference on the theory and practice of permaculture. Unlike EFG, "Paradise Lot" is a comparatively short, accessible, narrative account of Toensmeier's experience turning a barren urban lot in Holyoke, MA into a "food forest."

At the start of the book, Toensmeier and his co-gardener Jonathan Bates (who contributes short essays scattered throughout the book) are single, impoverished, lonely 30-something plant geeks struggling to start a business, find a place to settle down, and get girlfriends. Part of the fun and suspense of the book is following their personal stories, which are skillfully and unobtrusively interwoven into the central narrative of the garden. The book is also a terrific introduction to key concepts in permaculture. Toensmeier describes the entire process, from selecting and mapping a site to designing the garden, collecting seeds, working the soil, planting, harvesting and even preparing some of the unusual edibles, troubleshooting invasives and dealing with pests. There's lots of juicy details, but the technical information isn't overwhelming. If you're inspired (as I was) to learn more, there are comprehensive lists of resources (books, organizations, suppliers, etc) plus plant lists and garden maps in the book's appendicies.

Toensmeier writes beautifully, with a deeply-felt passion for plants and the natural world. In a broader sense, the book is about being creative, resourceful, and strategic in building a life and community that's both sustainable and satisfying.

Very inspiring! A wonderful book.

Not quite what I expected, but not bad, either.
By Jennifer A. Schultz
I expected more of the book to actually be devoted to the lot in question, rather than being basically an autobiography of two men who happened to garden in a small urban lot. I expected more of an in depth of: In year one, we planted x y and z and only y thrived. In year two y had grown W feet, etc. etc. I expected more before and after pictures or descriptions of the lot. That being said the book IS all about permaculture and forest gardens (even if the majority is about what happened BEFORE the lot or something tangential about their time on the lot, and not actually about the lot itself) and etc, and I learned more than I would have thought from a biography. I also appreciated that a lot of the plants described in the actual lot section appear to be available for sale on their website (Often I get frustrated about hearing of some great plant that it turns out is virtually unobtainable).

Inspiring
By SanDiegoMama
I loved Paradise Lot. It took me 3 days to read because I was reading so fast. I'm going to reread it again because it was so good. Love the stories in it. Very entertaining to read yet so much information at the same time that i need to go back with a pen and paper and take notes. Although they live on the East Coast with much colder weather and I live in San Diego, I feel that the book still helped me a great deal. I'm now even more inspired to work on my own back yard and food forest. I wish they would move to a new lot, start over and journal that garden as well! I'd buy that book.

I'm probably going to by their other 2 volume set about food forests. They explained about how they put that together and it seems like an encyclopedia of information that is very much worth having.

I'm sad that I'm not close to where they live. It would be interesting to take a tour after learning so much about the effort put forth in designing it all these years.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to create an edible yard. Very helpful.

Parents of preschoolers, help is here!
By christianfictionaddiction
I'm always on the lookout for fun, Bible-themed story books and activities that my children can both be entertained by and learn from at the same time. Zonderkidz has filled that need with a great book that your children are sure to love, because mine sure did!

The Super-Duper Mighty Jumbo Coloring book is an amazing book that is aptly named, containing almost 400 pictures for children to color! My children truly love this coloring book, not only because there are so many options to choose from, but because the book is divided into all of the main stories of the Bible. The book does not contain words from the Bible, but tells Bible stories through the pictures, allowing children to learn the stories while letting them add colors and their own creativity to the stories. My children's favorite was coloring the story of Jonah as he fled from God and was swallowed by a giant fish. My son just giggles over the picture of the fish throwing up Jonah onto shore! The coloring book will not only entertain your children with hours of coloring, but also help you impart Bible stories at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars.
