Review
'Following years of research, a+t architecture publishers presents the first theoretical-practical book on hybrid buildings. Taking its inspiration from the four issues of a+t magazine's Hybrid series, the book takes a look at the theories and projects which have had the greatest historical importance', Archdaily and Plataforma Arquitectura
'Se replantea el papel de los edificios híbridos en el siglo XXI vinculados a la hiperurbanización de algunas ciudades, a raíz de la pregunta que desde el prólogo escrito especialmente para esta edición nos lanza Steven Holl: ¿Cuál es el potencial de los edificios híbridos?', Edgargonzalez.com
From the Back Cover
The hybrid building is a specimen of opportunity which has the mixed-use gene in its gene code.
It turns against the combination of the usual programs and bases its whole raison d'etre on the unexpected mixing of functions. The hybrid is the consequence of a rant against tradition, giving typology the one finger salute.
It is an opportunist building, which makes the most out of its multiple skills, a key player which revitalises the urban scene and saves space.
The hybrid scheme proposes crossed fertilisation environments, where known genotypes are mixed and new genetic alliances are created. This way the personality of the hybrid emerges , as a celebration of complexity.
Hybridisation is associated with a certain form of grandeur, of gigantism, as mixing imposes grandesse. The hybrid surpasses the domains of architecture and settles into the urban scale. It is an artefact able to exercise centripetal force, a colossus counteracting the evil forces of dispersion.
The intimacy of private life and the sociability of public life dwell within the hybrid and produce constant activity, making it a building working full-time. It is not a disciplinary prototype but a concentration of interests, based not on tradition but rather on the future and the survival of which hinges on consensus.
This is Hybrid is a selection of the articles and projects published in the Hybrid series of the magazine a+t, running over four issues, during 2008 and 2009.
The prologue, written by Steven Holl specially for this compilation, puts forward the potential of hybrid buildings in the 21st Century.

Chronological Comparison with Stellar diagrams!
By daspfaff
Purchased this as a test drive... turned out to be really amazing!
Loved the way the projects moved in (mostly) chronological order throughout the book so you could get an idea about the progression of "Hybrid Housing" as it developed. Also, they included nice aerial images of the projects with the property lines highlighted. whenever possible, they include diagrams, sections, and axonometric drawings of the projects. Obviously projects from 1900's are less visually informing that projects from 2000's.
I haven't read much of it but the text is really good too. It's insightful about the development and the ideas surrounding each project in relation to cultural norms of the time.
Really exceptional graphic layout and presentation. Certain text is colored a light blue to denote common topics across the projects.
One con about the diagrams, each project has a "spectrum" at the bottom that lists all the program in each project (commercial, residential, etc.) While useful, the spectrum is confusing b/c it's hard to tell when a project does or does not have one program element.
great buy though! Can't wait to check out more titles from the same publisher!

This is a mixed bag
By Schinkel
On the plus side, the graphic evidence:
A concise and quickly comprehensible graphic overview of many of the last decade's most interesting hybrid projects. Color-coded plans and sections, complete with area break-downs of the various projects make it easy to dive into the individual projects and to compare them in terms of size, structure and mixture of uses.
On the down side, the text:
The translations from Spanish to English are pretty roughshod (Rafael Nadal post-match interview, anyone?). It's about time to get a professional to do that job, editors! The content, too, could use a good tweaking. The text is exclusively promotional: "If it's hybrid, then it's good and progressive and an urban catalyst ." Too bad no one took the effort to study and judge the actual performance of of the buildings - which is a fascinating and important subject - or to drop in a word or two of criticism or doubt. (If a project is truely radical, then there must by definition be at least some kind of lingering doubt as to its chances of success, no?) Of course, one doesn't expect a book like this to answer all questions, but one of its roles must certainly be to ask a few of them. (Otherwise we're just stuck with a re-hash of the architects'own self-laudatory texts.) The claim in the introduction that "hybrids have nothing to do with typology" is more than naive and reveals a complete lack of depth in the knowledge of architectural history. In fact: one could easily begin to arrange the examples in the book typologically/morphologically: the tower, multiple towers with base, the perforated block, etc.. (Which, now that I mention it, might have been a better way to organize the book. And by the way, Saarinen was Finnish and not Danish.)
To sum up: theme and concept: good; execution: mixed, especially in the text. The publishers should have taken a little more time and care before bringing this one out on the market: then they would have really had something. Too bad.
