Ages like fine wine!

Having received a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, I have read most, if not all, of the required reading at the graduate and undergraduate levels. This book is one of a few that remain on my bookshelf and that I continually refer to.

The beauty of this book is that despite its age (published 1976), it remains relevant and represents a rare classic. Even though the price tag is hefty, it is well worth the investment. It is hugely comprehensive and well written.

This is a must-have for anyone in the Materials field.

Better than stock

This is one of classic textbooks in materials science courses throughout the US. Used and taught in ceramics classes at both the undergrad and grad level, it covers all the major topics in the field: thermodynamics, crystal structures and defects, different properties of ceramics such as superconduction, piezoelectricity, ferromagnetism, etc... Each chapter includes a few homework problems that can be worked out by hand.

The book is also better than stock; its sale price is always going up.

The Ceramics Bible

This is a tour-de-force textbook that covers the fundamental science behind ceramics and glass. And to the extent that the same energy equations (for kinetics, thermodynamics, stress and strain, defects, light transmission, grain boundaries, etc) apply to other inorganic materials, this book is an understandable reference for them too. It was the bible at MIT for Ceramics Mat Sci BS and MS students. Well indexed, a usable teaching and reference book.

Informative and compelling

In this remarkable book, Vandana Shiva effectively contrasts corporate command-and-control methods of food production with the small farmer economy that predominates in the third world (especially in her native India). In contast to what many here in the U.S. might perceive as the conventional wisdom, Shiva makes a strong argument that local, small scale agriculture is superior to the agribusiness model for a number of reasons.
First, Shiva points out that many of the productivity gains attributable to the Green Revolution were achieved by dramatically increased inputs of fertilizer, seed and water. When one compares units of input with units of output, however, native practices produce higher yields -- especially when one takes into account the multiple uses derived from a single product.
For example, mustard oil is a vital product used by many of India's poor for cooking, seasoning, medicine and other uses. But it has been banned by the Indian government (under highly suspicious circumstances) in order to allow imports of soybean oil products. While giant corporations benefit from expanded sales, native industries have been destroyed, contibuting to poverty and malnourishment.
Shiva discusses the commercial fishing and aquaculture (shrimp farming) practices that inevitably result in environmental destruction and reduced catches. She compares this short-sighted approach with traditional Indian fishing techniques that have successfully sustained themselves for generations while protecting important ecosystems such as mangrove forests.
Shiva discusses corporate patenting of seeds, which insidiously transforms the cooperative ethic of seed sharing into a criminal offense. The author supports a non-cooperation movement in India that is resisting corporate attempts to claim ownership of seeds that have been cultivated by countless generations of farmers.
Shiva's sacred cow / mad cow metaphor effectively and appropriately contrasts agribusiness with small farming. India's sacred cows live in harmony with the environment, performing multiple services and producing multiple products for the community; whereas mad cows are a grotesque manifestation of an industrial system obsessed with uniformity, technology and profit.
Shiva also touches on the topic of genetic engineering (GE) and discusses the threat it poses to biodiversity, food safety and human health.
The Afterword to the book alludes to the WTO protests in Seattle. Shiva believes this watershed event proves that people are becoming more aware of the dangers of unaccountable corporate power, yet she believes that positive change is possible. This opening of consciousness to new possibilities may be attributable to the extraordinary work of people like Vandana Shiva, whose intelligence and compassion is abundantly evident in this book. Highly recommended!

Bushman, an emeritus professor at Columbia University and author of Joseph Smith and the Beginnings of Mormonism, greatly expands on that previous work, filling in many details of the founding prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and carrying the story through to the end of Smith's life. Many continue to view Smith as an enigmatic and controversial figure. Bushman locates him in his historical and cultural context, fleshing out the many nuances of 19th-century American life that produced such a fertile ground for emerging religions. The author, a practicing Mormon, is aware that his book stands in the intersection of faith and scholarship, but does not avoid the problematic aspects of Smith's life and work, such as his practice of polygamy, his early attempts at treasure-seeking and his later political aspirations. In the end, Smith emerges as a genuine American phenomenon, a man driven by inspiration but not unaffected by his cultural context. Joseph Smith claimed that he was visited by an angel who gave him golden plates from which he transcribed the Book of Mormon, and he had organized a church before he was twenty-five. His personal charisma and his administrative genius helped spread Mormonism throughout the Western United States, turning the sect into a legislative federation complete with social and political institutions. There were always those who thought Smith a charlatan and a fanatic, and, in 1844, at the age of thirty-eight, he was fatally shot by an angry mob. Bushman is both an emeritus professor of history at Columbia and a practicing Mormon, and his exhaustive biography carefully treads a path between reverence and objectivity, as when he investigates the phenomenon of "plural marriage"; Smith, in order to establish "a Righteous race . . . uppon the Earth," had more than thirty wives.

A distinguished Columbia historian, Bushman stresses the boy seer's thoroughly ordinary origins--born to a hard-pressed New England farm family and denied all but the rudiments of a formal education--to emphasize the marvel of the religious revolution he brought about. Beginning with the publication of a new volume of scripture--the Book of Mormon--recounting the resurrected Christ's ministry in ancient America, that revolution eventually produced a dynamic church run by a complex lay ministry and committed to spreading its message worldwide. Though himself a practicing Latter-day Saint (Mormon), Bushman steers clear of hagiography by permitting readers to hear the voices not only of the prophet's loyal followers but also of various skeptics and adversaries. Readers see in particular detail the views of those who rose against Smith during the turbulent final years of his life, when the practice of plural marriage helped stoke a firestorm of religious conflict. Though that storm ended with the prophet's death at the hands of an angry mob, Bushman gives the slain revelator credit for the remarkable durability of the church he left behind. The title of the book is a quotation Joseph made about himself. The book is devoted to primarily telling his story. In so doing it tells a lot about the early beginnings of the church. Those who would be interested in learning about the early beginnings of the LDS church will find insight from this book. Some of the issues dealt with may need further research and study by the reader to appreciate the whole story.

Their Other Two Books are Better

Personally I found the other two books written by Newman and Berkowitz, "How to Take Charge of Your Life" and "How to be Your Own Best Friend", to be much better. This book essentially explains in much detail what "How to Take Charge of Your Life" summed up in one sentence which is that "You cannot take charge of the present if you are busy reliving failures of the past".

The author write three very steamy, hot incredible arousing stories and the characters made the stories that much more believable. So if you’re looking too entertained for a while definitely check this box set out. You will not be disappointed! We humans want to feel good and part of the process, when we see results in such convincing manner; we realize how effective the method described in this book and how much you enjoy the Action.
Explores every fantasy! Nice plot and buildup to the action. Very descriptive, the authors don't miss a trick. I recommend this for those quiet lonely nights. It about time one of the book bundles that I actually enjoyed reading. Good subject matters could have been a little longer but much better than what I have been reading. Enjoy reading it.

Furiously fast is what this trilogy of stories is. Abigail Kinkade knows how to write an action story and this one is hot and steamy too. The heroes are vigilantes who are out to clean up some of the drug dealing scene and they do it in an explosive way.

The heroine, Leslie, is a tough lady with a heart of gold and she's the driver for the three vigilantes. Think Hulk Hogan, a couple of buddies and a hot girl. Anyhow this is entertaining stuff and I recommend it for a fast, sexy read with a surprise ending.

In his adaptation of the Goldilocks story, Spirin's (The Lord Is My Shepherd) lush colored pencil and watercolor spreads are as elaborate as the text is simple. Against white backdrops, Goldilocks and the bears are drawn in great realistic detail, along with judicious use of ornate setting details and delicate page ornamentation. These bears have fierce claws and teeth, but their apparel is nothing short of royal, dotted with jewels and pearls, and trimmed with feathers and gold. The text, conversely, is completely free of metaphors or complex sentences, the story stripped to its tag-line essence: "Who's been sitting in my chair?" asks each bear parent as Little Bear laments, "My chair's broken!" The suspenseful scene as the bears find Goldilocks asleep in Little Bear's well-appointed bed is followed by an abrupt illustration in which Goldilocks runs away, looking more gleeful than terrified, as each of the bears says, "Bye," and the narrator informs the reader, "And that's the end of the story!" Goldilocks' face doesn't always transmit her emotions clearly, but overall this is an enchanting-visually, at least-version. Ages 3-7.

PreSchool-Grade 2—Spirin's version of this classic pairs a simple, straightforward retelling with lush Renaissance costumes and elegant page designs. The bears, rendered in watercolor and colored pencil, are solid, realistic creatures, revealing sharp teeth and claws. Papa and Mama Bear, generally appearing together in their fur-trimmed garments, dominate their vertical space—in contrast to their diminutive son. The setting is created with richly realized essentials: solid porridge bowls, carved chairs, ornate beds, a massive stucco and wood-trimmed dwelling. Expansive white space surrounds the characters on most spreads, with embellished lines creating decorative, horizontal borders on selected pages. The creatures seem to regard their intruder more as a curiosity than a criminal; as the golden-haired child runs away down the path, they simply wave and call out their farewells. A source note concludes the text. The Goldilocks shelf is crowded; readers can turn to James Marshall for humor, Jan Brett for details, Valeri Gorbachev for whimsy, and Jim Aylesworth for Victorian, to name but a few. Retelling the familiar nursery tale, Spirin retains its brevity and much of its charm. The artwork dresses the characters in elaborate Renaissance costumes and occasionally places them before fully painted backdrops but usually shows them and a few props (bowls, chairs, beds) as cutouts against clean, white backgrounds. Since the style of Spirin’s watercolor and colored-pencil artwork is relatively sophisticated and richly detailed, this technique makes the pictures clearer and more accessible to young children. The bears have great physical presence, and unlike those in most dressed animal tales, here they seem quite wild—inhuman and untamed—for all their elegant trappings. Goldilocks is a pretty blond charmer with an occasional frozen, toothy smile reminiscent of a first-grader facing the lens on school picture day. An appended note provides a brief history of the story, noting changes in several versions from 1831 to 1904. Although many fine editions are available today, this nicely designed book would be a handsome addition to larger collections. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

Exquisite

First, you should know that this is a very basic and traditional retelling of Goldilocks. If you are looking for something updated or humorous, you'll want to keep looking.

However, the story as it stands is still perfect, just the way it was when we grew up. But it's supplemented by some of the most exquisite illustrations I've seen lately in a children's book. The book is a work of art that simply begs to be kept on the nightstand, rather than shoved in a book case with the rest of your child's books.

I thought at first that my daughter might be too young to appreciate the beauty of the book, but she loves it. The illustrations are incredibly detailed and she loves picking out little things she didn't notice the first time we read the book.

This just might be one of those heirloom books that we'll pass on to the next generation as well.

You'll want to slow down and study the illustrations. There are so many visual statements. My six year old and I laughed at the ridiculous. We oohed and aahed at the beautifully rendered characters and their surroundings. This was a fun picture book. .

Basic re-telling of the story with washed out but elaborate illustrations

This version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a stripped down and basic re-telling of the story. There are no elaborations or new twists as far as the tale goes. The price point is kind of high and I am assuming that it is because of the illustrations. While many have liked those, I find them a bit washed out and kind of cut and paste photoshop feel to them. I would have liked to have seen some form of background to given a richer feel to the illustrations but instead they are placed on a white page in a cut out form. The colors could have been richer given that the illustrations put the story in the Renaissance. It is an okay book but one which could have been better given the price.
