South Haven is no simple coming-of-age tale or hero's journey, blurring the line between victim and victimizer and asking readers to contend with the lies we tell ourselves as we grieve and survive. Following in the tradition of narratives by Edwidge Danticat and Junot Díaz, Sawhney draws upon the measured lyricism of postcolonial writers like Michael Ondaatje but brings to his subjects distinctly American irreverence and humor.

About the Author
Hirsh Sawhney's writing has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement, the Financial Times, Outlook, and numerous other periodicals. He is the editor of Delhi Noir, a critically acclaimed anthology of original fiction, and is on the advisory board of Wasafiri, a London-based journal of international literature. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut, and teaches at Wesleyan University. South Haven is his debut novel.

A precious gem!

Loved the book !
The characters develop in an enchanting manner and the satisfying twists make this precious gem a page turner. An honest rendition of the emotional journey of first and second generation immigrants. I am looking forward to more from this up and coming author

Very little redeeming value.....

Unless you are captivated by persistent pubescent profanity and pornography, don't waste your money buying this book or your time reading it. The book's themes are hackneyed at best, describing in nauseating detail aspects of the boys' "coming of age" and the family's "immigrant experience". I read the book through to the end, only to be further disappointed by the abruptness and predictability of the ending. The book is just another riff on family dysfunction, and I found it to be boring and offensive.....

Unique Look at the Immigrant experience

Awesome book. I flew through it! Very compelling story and well rounded characters. I have really enjoyed reading books by Jhumpa Lahiri and other South Asian authors about the immigrant experience in the US. South Haven has been one of the best ones I have read about Indian families adapting to life here in the US - no cliches and lots of honest moving prose.
