About the Author
Steve Matchett has worked as a qualified mechanic for Ferrari, BMW and Benetton. He now lives in western France.

Must Reading for an auto racing fan !

Though it deals with Formula 1 racing, any racing fan would find this interesting as it talks of auto racing through the eyes of the mechanics who put the car together for a race (and after an accident) and their constant struggle to keep it on the road and competitive. Most F1 fans will recognize Steve Machett as the commentator on NBCsports network (and formerly of SPEED ) who covers the tires and technology of the F1 cars. But prior to his stint on TV as a race commentator, he was a race mechanic for Benneton's Formula 1 race team and knew Schumacher as an up-and-comer. This inside look is a welcome addition to racing literature. I have not read his earlier book, or anything else he has written, but intend to at my earliest convenience.
Incidentally, that cover photograph is of a mechanic caught in a refueling pit stop fire in an F1 race before they banned refueling in F1.

Tale of hardworking man in the background

I really liked the down to Earth description of the F1 1990's at Benetton. I always though to be an F1 race mechanic You have to be a super hero working on the team racing cars for 20 years and inventing lot of inventions. But it's a job for hard working people working week after week with exhausting travel schedule. I really though the pit stop crew are specialists just for changing the tires, I didn't understand they usually worked all nights through the racing weekends.
Nice moment in the book is how the writer describes his change of his carrier and how he started writing books. Thank You for good time with Your book Steve Matchett.

The Mechanic's Tale

I was hoping for, perhaps even expecting, a book that had some mechanical/technical detail of the intensely complex Formula One cars, having been written by a mechanic on a very well respected team. That is not, however, what I found.
The author seemed to work hard to convey the 'feel' of the sport rather than provide any detail of the cars themselves - seeming at times to present more of a social auto-biography than anything else: I was not interested in the man, I was interested in his job.
I am not sure that I would recommend this to anyone interested in the mechanical/technical side of the sport - it has really missed the mark.
